Filled with a variety of essential language art skills, this site is a super teaching opportunity to be followed by students working on their own. With 42 lessons ranging from "Differentiating between who/whom" to "Writing Sonnets" to "Crafting Your Character's Dialogue in Your Screenplay," there is plenty to suit your particular class needs. You are able to write replies (comments), however an email address is required. Registration is not required for any other part of this site.
This site does offer the option of signing up for RSS feeds. There are some unobtrusive advertisements at the site.

In the Classroom
These lessons give great examples as well as "pop quizzes" as you go through them. It would be great to do these on a projector or interactive whiteboard, having students comment as you go; then you can assign their own writing to follow up. Of particular interest is the lesson on "note taking on a computer." As essential as computers are to writing these days, it may be the best place to begin. This might also be a good site to link from your class website. It is very easy for students to explore on their own and get extra help where needed. Or have small groups investigate a specific area together and then create a multimedia presentation to share with the class. Have the groups create a podcast to share using a tool such as Podomatic (reviewed here).You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Ever wonder what it would be like to have open access to lectures at Harvard? Stanford? MIT? Academic Earth gives you that access in a limited fashion. This site contains thousands of video lectures by some of the most well-regarded professors at several of the top universities in the US. You can sort the lectures by subject, by lecturer, by university, or by "playlist." The playlists sort lectures from various topics and multiple professors into thematic groups. Within individual subjects, there are individual lectures and courses--collections of lectures by the same professor on a general subject. Watch a lecture on "The Civil War and Reconstruction Era, 1845-1877," or "The American Novel since 1945," or "Linear Algebra." The topic possibilities go on and on.

In the Classroom
These are college-level lectures given at Ivy-league universities. The subject matter and the complexity of the subject matter will be beyond many high school students, and the delivery format (video-taped lecture) means there is a certain "MEGO" (my eyes glaze over) effect when viewing these offerings. However, for gifted or academically talented students, these lectures may be exactly the kind of enrichment they have been thirsting for. Provide a link to these lectures for times when a student or two has gotten way ahead of the rest of the class. Let parents know about this site for home use. Refer students who are doing in-depth research. And in your own copious free time, check one out yourself! Structured for English language learners, this site is also good for those studying some of the finer points of English grammar and vocabulary. Clicking on the links on the left will take you to the part of the site devoted to each of these things: vocabulary, verb tenses, conditionals, modals, gerunds, prepositions, irregular verbs, and more. Each of the pages has many interactive exercises for students to work at their own pace.

In the Classroom
Many of these exercises are great for practice or review for students since they can do them independently at their own speed. The mini-grammar tutorials are good reviews for short lessons that you have already taught ("sit-set," who-whom-whose," etc.). Some of these lessons would make good activating strategies to get the class involved in those "ho-hum," but oh-so-necessary grammar lessons. Have students work in cooperative learning groups, divide up the vocabulary words, and have each group responsible to find the definitions for their assigned vocabulary words. Enhance learning by having the groups share their words and definitions in an online book, using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Have the groups share the online books on your interactive whiteboard or projector and embed them in a class wiki. And of course, don't miss the interactive word puzzles! There are detailed lesson plans available for math, arts and crafts, nutrition, health, music, math, reading, physical education, technology, writing, science, and social studies. Visit the Seasonal Items link to find even MORE resources related to Read Across America, 100 Days ideas, Daily seasonal writing prompts, and much more! Many of the links will take you to other sites, but the onsite printable worksheets and calendars make it worth a visit. Although this site has a TON to explore, one of the best places on this site is the daily writing prompt section (find seasonal prompts at the Seasonal Items link). You can share them on your interactive whiteboard or projector with a picture and fact about the day and a question requiring a written answer. This is a great discussion starter or activating strategy with any grade level and it can already be posted when the kids enter the room or used as a prompt for blogging. Whatever subject area you teach, if you are looking for some new strategies to reach your students, check out this site.

This resource is ideal for an interactive whiteboard or projector. Demonstrate the tool on the whiteboard or projector and allow the class to create a strip together before you share the link on your teacher web page. Have students create strips as a quiz or other assignment and email the links to you. No more papers to carry around and grade! While all the content on this site should be previewed, it is a great inspirational site for higher level students, especially honors and AP, to look at professional level writing geared to provoke response at the same high level. There are very practical tips for getting writing published as well as ideas on how to avoid writer's block and writing with humor. New articles are added frequently, so be sure to check back. Some have great titles, such as "Wordflab Surgery." New articles are added frequently, so be sure to check back. Links to other parts of the site steer students to writing with inspiration and generating their own ideas. This site will also take you to a blog (called ZenHabits), which you can join for free, which is another source of student comment and inspiration, as well as commentary.

This site is quite useful for the teacher who teaches writing, both creative and expository, with the idea of training students who want to BE writers. Using a projector or interactive whiteboard, teachers could post pieces of writing and have students discuss and even edit some of the writing presented. You are able to print out the entire list. Along with each title, the author, and number of vocabulary words are also included. There are prompts for younger students up through 12th grade. Powered by Squidoo, it has a lot of ads, which makes it more suitable for teacher use than student, but the variety of prompts and links to other writing prompt sites makes it worthwhile.

With today's students plugged into their devices, this site offers a great way to attract students. It has posted podcasts (visit the "Chop Bard" link) that explains Shakespeare in a way that students will find appealing and more realistic than reading it alone or aloud in class. Several of the podcasts are geared specifically to Romeo and Juliet, a play often read in 9th grade which makes it familiar and an easy listen for students. The site includes a list of the chronology of plays as well as a timeline of Shakespeare's life.
A caution that there is language slightly bawdy in the podcasts, so preview them first. However, listening to the "Chop Bard" either as a class or as individual students, gives students a lift and a laugh, creating a link with Shakespeare that they have never experienced.

Share on many social media sites with the press of a button. Recording the message is easy, and embedding it into a site such as a wiki or blog has never been simpler! No login or registration is needed. If you choose to send a message via email, you must set a password for the site. Vocaroos are stored on their server. Created messages can also be downloaded to individual computers. Visit their FAQs for common questions and answers.

You need to be able to navigate the website controls and adjust the sound levels on your computer. Copy/pasting embed codes is also a necessary skill for insertion into a website. Email the sound clip very easily.Future savings of Vocaroos are uncertain, depending upon server space. Before using it with students, you may wish to obtain permission from administration and/or parents. Be sure to check your school's acceptable use policy. Students should be made aware of acceptable use and the consequences of misuse of the service.
Vocaroo has a wide variety of applications in any type of classroom! For basic technology integration, extend and enhance learning with this tool. Record snippets of information as reminders on your class website or instructions for students to follow. This is terrific for students receiving learning support or non-readers! Have students describe aspects of their classroom learning experiences to share with others, such as what they learned from a science experiment or discovered about life in Colonial America. Record a quick message for an absentee and email the link to him/her explaining how to catch up on missing work. Create tutorial pieces that students can use as study aids (or have them create them for each other). Use this site in world language classes or for ELL students: have students record and listen to their own pronunciation or send short messages to each other to translate. Have students use this site to practice speeches before the presentation to hear their speed, tone, and words. Use this site for research presentations, substitute instructions, or many other uses. With younger students, read a short story on Vocaroo and have them follow along with a picture book. Or have the students read their own stories into Vocaroo and email the readings to their parents! For Mother's Day, why not have students record messages for mom or grandma? Another idea: create a class wiki where parents can "find" the entire selection of Vocaroos for Mother's Day (or another holiday). Record Vocaroos of each student talking about the importance of Moms for Mother's Day or how grateful they are for certain things at Thanksgiving. Embed them all in a class wiki to share with parents. Just email the URL for the collection.

Level 1 is designed for grades 4-6, level 2 is for grades 7-8, and level 3 is high school level. The activities use both Greek and Latin "roots and cells" to help students deepen their vocabulary. As part of their extensive site for vocabulary, roots, and more, MyVocabulary.com has added a themed area for Back to School. Find interactive vocabulary activities using Back to School vocabulary words. You will also find printable crosswords, fill in the blanks and more, all using the same theme words. This and other "themes" available on the site will make vocabulary development fun.

In the Classroom
Share the puzzles on your interactive whiteboard or projector or make them available as links on your teacher public page. Have students (or groups) create their own illustrated dictionaries of terms using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Have students work in cooperative learning groups, divide up the vocabulary words, and have each group responsible to find the definitions for their assigned vocabulary words. Enhance learning by having the groups share their words and definitions in an online book, using a tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Have the groups share the online books on your interactive whiteboard or projector.
