Categories are listed in alphabetical order from Acceleration to Weight/Mass. Within each category are the different converters/calculators. For example, after choosing volume, choices include acres, barrels (dry, federal, liquid, and wine), cubic units, gallons, quarts teaspoons, yards, and more. Other interesting conversions include your weight on other planets, your age in dog years, and translations to and from Pig Latin. You are sure to find exactly the conversion for any need within this site along with others to use just for fun!

The well-written instructional modules that introduce STEM challenges allow students to solve real-life problems using scientific lab concepts. Each module includes interactive elements that let students experiment with the topic concept. The presentation and subject matter are excellent for these high-interest interactives. Gizmos are searchable by learning standard, grade level, or topic, allowing for remediation and enrichment activities. A free account gives you 20-40 free Gizmos, including lesson materials.

The elementary lesson focuses on learning fractions through dividing up quilt squares, including basic and advanced activities. The middle school lesson focuses on proportions. The high school activity is based on polynomials. These would be fun activities for students to apply these math concepts through hands-on activities.

View and try activities already created online. If you like your project you can save it to a folder on your computer. There is a short video in the "How To" section that will walk you through the process of making, saving, and playing a Flash Jeopardy game. Their purpose is to provide discussion and communication opportunities for all interested in math through mailing lists, discussion areas, and ask an expert areas. The Math Tools area is a vast library of technology tools, lessons, activities, and other support materials for teaching and learning mathematics. Although it may be a little overwhelming; there are wonderful tours to help you get started in this area. Another frequently visited area is the Teacher Exchange which offers lessons from preK through College submitted by fellow math teachers sorted by math strands. Be sure to check out some of the free workshops offered to help navigate different portions of the site. The site contains too many resources to name them all here, so be sure to take some time to explore and then revisit to find more information. One valuable resource offered is the weekly newsletter - just sign up and receive site updates and more in your digital mailbox weekly.

This site offers all information on World Maths Day, usually held in March. World Maths Day has taken place each year since 2007. They plan to add science challenges. Students play at home and at school against other students around the world in live games of mental arithmetic. Each game lasts for 60 seconds and students can play up to 100 games, earning points for their personal tally. The students who answer the most questions correctly appear on the Hall of Fame. There are 5 different levels of play, 20 games on each level. All participants receive a digital certificate of achievement. Site resources include teacher and student quick launches, technical guides, and printable posters for the classroom.

The calculator has a dropdown box to display the recent history of calculations which may be useful to retrieve recent problems. Display on the interactive whiteboard and have a student "Vanna White" model new procedures on the IWB as others work problems at their seats. (The class can "bump" Vanna if he/she makes an error!) TV411 offers lessons and games covering math topics from calculating area to reading a pay stub. Each lesson is offered in a slide format beginning with an introduction to the activity, followed by questions to answer. Upon answering questions, feedback is provided. If the answer was incorrect, an explanation of the correct solution is provided. The site also provides several math games practicing fractions, ratio, data, and percent. Spanish and ESL/ELL teachers will want to note that there is a small sample of lessons available in Spanish on the site. Many of the topics are also applicable in Family and Consumer Science or business classes, as well.

Tricks include Calendar Math which gives a formula for finding the day of the week someone was born based on their birth date, 73 which gives a formula for always finding an answer of 73 to a problem, and Two Too which provides a simple formula for always finding an answer of two after choosing any number. Learn about the culture of Japan, geometry, and art with Origami. Use these video tutorials to create clever objects for holiday gifts while teaching mathematical principals about 2D and 3D figures, line, area, perimeter, and planes. Demonstrate how to create an origami object by projecting the site's animated videos directions. Stop and pause the video as students follow along. Save this site in your favorites on classroom computers so students can practice paper folding independently. Afterward, discuss the benefits of oral, visual, or animated directions. Ask students to describe the folding process with geometric terms such as fractional parts, symmetry, faces, edges, rotations, lines, triangle, angles, and shapes. This site provides hands-on math using a Mobius strip (or band). Though the site is "plain vanilla," this topic always fascinates students. Directions are included for creating the strips. A simple, mathematically important, and wonderfully entertaining two-dimensional object, also known as the Mobius strip, that has only one surface and one edge and is therefore of great interest in topology. It is used in classrooms to develop understanding of surfaces and create mystery. Two experiments build on each other.

This activity provides you with two fractions, a pair of shapes, and a number line. Each shape is connected to a point on the number line corresponding to one of the fractions. You can create the computer generated fractions by adding sections to the empty shaped and coloring in the appropriate portion of the shape to match the fraction. When both shapes are correctly divided and colored, a third box appears. You are asked to divide and color the new shape to create a new fraction that lies between the values of the original two. After all three boxes are correctly colored, the student must enter the value of the fraction which they created. Be sure to check out the link for instructors which provides a printable with exploration questions, links to standards, suggested classroom uses, and links to similar resources.

This site provides visual experimentation with the relationship between the value of fractions and areas within a square or a circle. After choosing to view squares or circles, a fractional amount is created both in the chosen shape and on a number line. The goal is to create equivalent fractions in the shapes provided. Be sure to check out the instructor tab which gives suggestions for classroom use, exploration questions, correlating standards and textbooks, and suggestions for similar resources. Note that some of the instructions and prompts come up in small pop-ups. Be sure to watch for these in case they hide behind your main window.
In the Classroom
Provide students with a copy of the explorations worksheet provided in the instructors tab. Use this site to demonstrate different representations of fractions within different shapes and how the fractions are placed on number lines. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Or use your interactive whiteboard to create a learning center for students to manipulate the site themselves. This is an extensive collection of ready to go, teacher-made SMART Notebook activities. This collection covers all grade levels and subject areas. Click Elementary, Middle School, Jr. High, or High School to find the many (MANY) resources). The topics vary greatly and the quantity is impressive. You must have Smart Board software installed on your computer to open these files. Some files will work using the SMART Notebook Express online viewer available here. (Download the notebook file from Longwood's collection to your desktop and then upload to SMART Notebook Express site.)
In the Classroom
These lessons are great for the new SMART Board user or the seasoned pro. Use these if you need a lesson but don't have time to create one from scratch. View the lessons and use them to help you create your own lesson. Click the different tabs to view the different grade levels. Please note that all of these activities require SMART Notebook software (which comes with SMART brand IWBs). Don't have SMART brand IWB's? Some files will work using the SMART Notebook Express online viewer available here. (Download the notebook file from Longwood's collection to your desktop and then upload to SMART Notebook Express site.) Create your own motivational posters easily and simply. Choose a random picture (one from Flickr or Facebook) or use one already on your computer. Choose colors and other options, as well as the type of text to be used. Enter your text and preview the result. Once complete, save to Flickr, your computer, or print. Remember, you can use a saved image in PowerPoint shows and on a class wiki, as well as blogs and other sites.

In the Classroom
Make sure students are aware of copyright laws. Use this site to encourage the proper use of photographs for which students have authorization. Model including appropriate photo credits on the posters. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Easily pre-register students to avoid creating logins, view and download their creations, and view the site advertisement-free. You will find information about the Educator Account here.Younger students can use this tool together as a whole-class activity or simply enjoy the posters their teacher creates. Have students create a picture about a unit topic with a caption using new terms learned. For example, create posters on predators and prey or on animal classifications. Students can create a poster of a study skill or learning activity that helps them learn. Create a caption that explains how the student learns best. Every subject area can use this resource to create interesting presentation posters for display or as springboards for discussing what was learned. For example, in Biology, students could create a poster on a cell part with a clever caption highlighting the importance of its function. In Literature or History, students can create posters about the perspectives of others in the story or in that historical period. Rather than a traditional research project, have cooperative learning groups use this site to show their knowledge in any subject area. Ask students to apply concepts such as constitutional rights by illustrating them in poster images with captions. Teachers can create bulletin board images, as well. Have a classroom motivation poster competition to start off the school year! Share the winners on your class wiki or in a PowerPoint presentation at back-to-school night/open house. As special occasions approach, have students bring in or take a digital photo they can turn into a poster as a family gift, with their own inspirational saying. Create a portfolio of 6-word stories, utilizing a powerful picture and 6 words to demonstrate the concept that was learned. Assign students the task of posting their project on a blog, with a more detailed explanation of their understanding of the concept depicted in the picture.
