This site offers many links to information about Snowflake Bentley and other resources for studying snow crystals. Wilson (Snowflake) A. Bentley is credited with the discovery that no two snowflakes are alike. His research and studies on snowflakes were conducted in the small Vermont town of Jericho. Snowflake pioneered the science of photographing snow crystals by attaching a microscope to his camera. The most in-depth section of the site offers resources to learn more about snowflakes such as an educational unit on snowflakes, computer recreations of snowflakes and math sites studying patterns and symmetry.

This is a one stop shop for SMART Board (interactive whiteboard) math lessons. All information and activities found on this site have been created by the site's owner Harvey Almarode a retired education professor from James Madison University. The site contains pre-made SMART lessons, web resources and links to SMART professional development. Lessons can be found and downloaded on all math topics.
These lessons are created for the SMART Board so SMART Notebook software is needed to run the lessons. If you don't have SMART Notebook the lessons can be viewed using SMART Notebook Express found at http://express.smarttech.com/#. The site also sells a flash drive with the lessons loaded on it, but you don't HAVE to buy anything.

This applet provides great opportunities to explore experimental and theoretical probabilities by changing the area of the colored regions of the circle. When a section is added it reduces the other sections by an equal amount in order to add the new sector. When this occurs, the probability that that particular color will be landed on will change. The number of sections of the circle can be changed from 1 to 12, as each spin is made, the color is recorded along with the percentage of time each color has appeared.
Be sure to visit the learner section of the site which contains a nice description of probability and how it is used in the real world. The instructor section also has a lot of valuable information including links to standards and textbooks, classroom information, and related resources. In addition, there is a link to a printable sheet of exploration questions to be used with the site.

Once a shape is chosen, the corner can be stretched to create a new shape. Click a button and that shape is converted into a tessellation in front of your eyes! Choices are also provided for different colors within the shapes to enable visualization of how the pattern is created.

This site provides practice with exploring area and perimeter by either allowing the computer to randomly draw a shape on a grid or by creating a space of your own on the grid. Choices are given to allow for questions about area or perimeter, or for both. To check an answer, simply click on the "check answer" button for immediate feedback. Sessions can be scored, or scoring can be turned off to allow for easier exploration. The learner portion of the site provides a quick explanation of how objects can have similar areas but much different perimeters. The instructor portion provides links to standards, some textbook links, a printable with exploration questions, classroom discussion information, and links to similar resources.

This site provides many resources for math teachers of all grades and includes lesson plans, articles, classroom and administrator questions and answers, and helpful links - all located under the "helpful tool" tab at the top of the site. Click to find elementary resources, algebra, calculus, and other "basic math." Free webinars are also available within the site. Math Solutions was founded by Marilyn Burns, who is known as one of the foremost experts in elementary math instruction.
Although much of the website is devoted to materials and Professional Development for sale, there are many resources available for free that are extremely helpful for classroom teachers. One such resource is the classroom lessons portion. Lessons are in ready to print PDF format making them easy to review and use for planning. Sample classroom conversations are often included along with samples of student work and suggestions for use in the classroom. This site also sells many resource materials, so links to these materials are included for alternative resources within the lesson. No need to buy, however! Teachers can sign up to receive the free monthly newsletter containing information about new materials on the Math Solutions site.

Math is Fun when you visit this website that is loaded with games, activities and much more! Math activities are divided into topics such as Algebra, Data, Games, Dictionaries, Worksheets, and more. After choosing a topic there are several choices for appropriate activities within the category. The teachers page has links to many virtual manipulatives, puzzles, speed math and other classroom activities. All activities contain an explanation and solution to the puzzle. Although this site may appear as another "drill and kill" site, is also has a lot of extra features and activities included. If you are a math teacher, this is definitely a site worth taking a look at.

This site is an interactive, collaborative project that uses Google maps with you and your students to provide content. You can also see Math maps created by others. By following the directions, you can create math problems utilizing information from your own city or town. Once the math problems are posted on the map, you can tweet or blog to inform others about them. In addition to creating problems, your students can view the contributions of others and solve real world math problems. Be aware: pop-up messages do appear across the bottom of the screen. These messages are recent posts to the site. Teachers who wish to contribute must submit a Gmail address to be offered access to add their own "Maths Maps." (Note to U.S. educators and students: What you know as "math" is known as "maths" in the UK, Australia, and some other countries. The "s" is NOT a typo!)

What makes this site special is that the content comes directly from educators and students. Use the existing math problems as a challenge activity or to demonstrate how math can be used in the real world. Share the maps and math questions on your interactive whiteboard or projector. The different pin colors represent different age groups so you can choose appropriately leveled math problems. You can easily differentiate for individuals by telling them which color to explore. This site is a great way to get your students to learn more about their community. Have your students research a community spot and create a math problem about it as a class. Enter the information onto the map together or under teacher supervision for other classes all over the world to use. Use the archives to find activities sorted by season and math strands making it easy to find just the right activity for whatever strand you are teaching. Then allow students to learn through exploration and constructivist learning. Mark this site in your Favorites as a regular stop to look for seasonal alternatives. Consider sharing some areas of the site with parents for students to find math activities that are fun to retain skills over long breaks. Take photos of the completed projects and have students demonstrate their understanding of the concepts by narrating one of the photos using Slides, reviewed here.

Consider sharing these links as part of a collection of materials for online help for your students on class web pages or wikis, documents, or videos. Maybe ask students to generate their own "online help" pages for each math unit, selecting and annotating the web resources they find most useful. Use Think Math to improve thinking about - Math! Choose either a grade level (K through 5) or a subject (such as Algebra, Geometry, Time and Money, or Data Analysis, to name a few.) Use one or more of the e-lab activities for each subject as well as interactive tutorials explaining the topic. Don't miss the teacher resources/guides under the Think Math! tab with great Adobe PDF resources.

In the Classroom
If you teach math to grades K-5 (or beyond), you will want to save this site in your favorites. Use the interactive tutorials as review activities, to introduce concepts, or for students to learn as groups. Use the activities as exciting drill and practice that provides feedback on right and wrong answers. For example, use "Comparing numbers" tutorials and activities to learn and practice identifying the hundreds and tens places. Each example gives immediate feedback on right and wrong answers. Use as an individual activity or in groups to provide great examples and practice with math concepts. Be sure to list this link on your class website so students can access (and practice) both in and out of the classroom.

This math site is a MUST SEE for teachers of all grade levels. Much of this site is designed for K-8 teachers, but there are a few activities for the high school grades. Although the site is mainly a drill and practice, it offers such an array of topics and levels that there is something for everyone here (and it is terrific for differentiating lessons in the classroom). Sample topics include roman numerals, Algebra II, pre-algebra, measurement, absolute value, early childhood math, telling time, money, place value, fractions, decimals, mixed operations, and more! And did we mention, each topic includes rich, colorful interactives for students to practice skills! Most topics also include options to specify content (for example, choosing to practice addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division). fun activities for all levels!
