Although this site is no longer maintained, most links are working. Learn about exercise and eating healthy at this kid-friendly website. Tony didn't get chosen for the football (what Americans call soccer) team, and he is devastated. Come along with Tony and his friends to learn about how his choices kept him off of the team. Learn about the four food groups, nutrients, the importance of exercise, and several other topics about health and fitness. There is a link for teachers with objectives, curriculum standards, and more details about this interactive website. Other highlights include an online review quiz, drag and drop health activities, research and facts, tips for choosing the right food, and much more. Since this site was created in the UK, Americans may notice some minor spelling and grammar differences. A few activities on this site require Flash; however, there is still plenty of information to learn from making your visit worth while.

Use this site to help your students understand the concepts of community and community helpers. Use your interactive whiteboard or projector to share these useful people with your class. Highlight a career each week (or day) during a unit about community. Divide students into 8 groups (2-3 students per group) and have each group learn about a different career. Have the groups create simple PowerPoint presentations with the free Microsoft PowerPoint Online, reviewed here, to share with the class on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Students learn about biology, ecology, health, and the environment through the studies of pests. Lesson Plans are divided into younger and older elementary students. Younger students' lesson plans include "Intro to Pests" and "Totally Termites." Older students include inquiry based activities such as "Termitology" and "Before They Were Pests." The site includes games and documents. Click on "Amazing Pests" to learn fun pest facts and view a dictionary of pests. View "Threats and Prevention" to learn about the damage that pests can cause and ways to prevent infestation and damage. Play fun Learning Games such as "Name That Pest," "The Pest Rangers," and "Archibald's Adventures." The audio is sure to get student attention.
Note: Students can also send a pest card by entering a recipient's name and email address as well as their own name and email address. Many district's have policies prohibiting students from using a personal email address. Additionally, they can sign up for newsletters which require parent authorization for those under 13. Please check your district's policy concerning student email and Acceptable Use Policy Activities can be seen online and also downloaded as an Adobe PDF document. Use what students already know about pests to bring complex concepts such as social behavior and needs of organisms into focus. Students can use the site and create tip sheets for managing pests. Use multimedia programs such as PowerPoint and others to create these as a digital storytelling project. Students can also play the interactive games and write a story about life as a pest. Focus on the adaptations of pests to determine where they live and what other pests they are related to.

The unit touches upon several learning styles and national standards. It is a detailed and user-friendly theme that will have children completely immersed. Africa Focus offers a wealth of digital images and sound recordings from contemporary Africa. This collection from the University of Wisconsin contains more than 3000 slides, 500 photographs, and 50 hours of sounds from 45 different countries. Click Search the Collection to see image categories which include artisans, buildings and structures, cities and towns, education, landscape, religion, and women. Sound recordings include drums, greetings, rites and ceremonies, songs, and signing. The site is easily searched by keyword or by subject heading.

Teachers will find this site rich in resources for units on science, social studies, geography, architecture, music, art, and culture. Make Africa a "real" place by sharing on a projector as you share stories or learn about homes ("Structures") and habitats or landforms ("Landscape") with younger students. This intriguing website gives students a front row seat to anatomy and physiology. The website provides 18 virtual autopsy cases. Each case includes a presentation about the case, history of the patient, and results of examinations performed on the patient. The cases each offer students an interactive human body. Students can click on various body parts to learn more about the health of each of the systems of the body (central nervous system, respiratory system, endocrine system, gastrointestinal track, cardiovascular system, reticulo-endothelial system, genito-urinary system, musculoskeletal system, and general external appearance). Once students have investigated the case, they are asked to identify the cause of death (the website provides 5+ possibilities for each case). If the students guess the cause of death incorrectly, they receive clues.

Are you looking for a unique way to grab the attention of your teenage students? This interesting website explores the connection between hair and science. Correlations are made between bad hair days and the weather. Three of the "hands on" activities include building a hair hygrometer, the healthy hair test, and creating curls. Some of the articles feature interactive elements that require Flash, but there is still plenty to learn about healthy hair at this site.
In the Classroom
Although this website doesn't have many "bells and whistles" (it dates back to 1998), the content could be very interesting in a chemistry or other secondary science class. This website takes a "teenage friendly" topic and brings it into the science classroom. There are many higher-level science topics within the text of this website. This all-encompassing atlas site provides a broad variety of information and activities. The subject areas include agriculture, biology, boundaries, climate, environment, geology, government, history, mapping, transportation, people, and water. All of the subjects incorporate the United States (for example, the agriculture pages discuss the agriculture of the USA). The map features are phenomenal and include both printable maps and "dynamic maps" which are interactive and awesome! Some of interactive maps include topics such as relief and elevation, West Nile virus, volcanoes and more. This site is a perfect addition to any science class that is studying volcanoes, climate, biology and more. It is also useful in a geography class studying the various uses and types of maps.

Have your students work in cooperative learning groups to investigate the "dynamic maps". Assign each group a topic to explore (there are 7). Have the students research the information using the maps and then report their findings to the class, perhaps displaying examples on a projector or interactive whiteboard. This site offers information about the devastating facts of domestic abuse. There is a 12-minute video (requires FLASH), real-life stories by students who have experienced domestic abuse, an interactive quiz and a vast array of information on the subject of domestic abuse. Remember this site was created in the UK, so some of the language may be new to your students. You may need to discuss the noticeable differences. The interactives and video require Flash; however, there is a lot to learn and discuss at this site that doesn't require Flash.
In the Classroom
Encourage your teenaged students to read the real-life stories about students who experienced domestic abuse, either as a springboard to guidance discussions or for frank one-on-one talk. Although this site is no longer maintained, most links are working. This site has factual information about arson. It includes video footage, authentic cases of arson, surveys, what to do to help, and more. Take advantage of this website, created especially for pre-teens and teenagers, as one of many current issues topics when studying current events or safety. Flash is required for the one video, however tand the reviewers didn't see any other Flash activities. There is a lot to learn from the material that doesn't require Flash.
