KidsHealth is a creation of the A.I. DuPont Clinics and the Nemours Foundation, presenting information on pediatric health for both adults and children. The information for children includes simple descriptions of How the Body Works, Puberty and Growing Up, and discussions of concepts of hygiene and infection. For adults, there are more detailed discussions of health issues affecting children.

In the Classroom

This site has a lot of short educational movies that would be great for reviewing a lesson. Find the appropriate movie for your lesson, and show it at the end of class on the interactive whiteboard or projector. There are also a lot of review activities and student exploration resources on this site that would make it an excellent learning center or station. Save the site as a favorite, and have students review it in cooperative learning groups before a quiz or test.

Help students connect environmental science to the health of their own homes, schools, and communities with this nine-day, resource-based curriculum unit for fourth and fifth graders. The unit introduces environmentalism, ecosystems and food chains, oil spills, nuclear power, hazardous waste, toxic chemicals, pesticides, lead, and other environmental health concerns through readings, research, discussion, role-play, mapping, and hands-on science investigations. Activities include collecting visible air-pollution particles, constructing food chains, modeling an oil-spill cleanup, researching alternative energy sources, comparing household cleaning alternatives, and contacting a local health department about lead risks. A separate section walks students through the scientific method, making it a useful source of ready-to-go investigations and background information. Because the unit was written in 1996, teachers should verify time-sensitive statistics, health recommendations, and scientific claims before using them with students.

Take advantage of the lesson plans and more. Have students fill out a graphic organizer as a pre and post assessment about what they know about environmental hazards. A KWL chart works well for this. Replace paper graphic organizers with online, interactive graphic organizers at Holt Graphic Organizers, reviewed here. As you work through the unit ask students to write about how to apply the ideas in this curricular unit on the environment and health to their own home lives. Exchange a paper journal with a blog tool like Site123, reviewed here. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, challenge your students to create a blog using Edublog, reviewed here.

This is a complete copy of the school health manual for the State of Maine, listed as a series of Adobe Acrobat files. It provides comprehensive sections on a wide range of medical and psychological conditions and their management in school settings. The information is clearly organized, making it easy for teachers and others without medical training to find specific information. Great resource!
