It's certainly not difficult to find websites about Ancient Egypt, but NOVA provides an absolutely stunning interactive look at major Egyptian historical landmarks and objects. Take a 360-degree glance at the Great Pyramid or an ancient tomb, browse photo galleries, study cross-sections or examine artifacts from every possible vantage point. You can access these features from a number of search options: chronological, geographical, or by media type. Some of the features require Flash, but most of the valuable information doesn't.

Sites like this are what interactive whiteboards (or projectors) are made for! The visual impact is striking, and using this site as an adjunct to classroom discovery about the wonders of Ancient Egypt will do much to bring the topic alive for students. Smarthistory started as a blog featuring free audio guides, podcasts, and videos. Later, it became an interactive exploration of eras, styles, and artists. Smarthistory has recently merged with Khan Academy, sharing the same concept: that high-quality education should be free and available to all. You can watch Smarthistory videos on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable in class.

A must for any art classroom, Smarthistory adds an extra dimension and deeper understanding to any history, social studies, or cultural studies classroom. Use the Smarthistory videos on YouTube to engage and enhance student learning. If the videos aren't viewable in class assign students to watch them at home; that's perfect for the flipped or blended classroom. If you are going to require students to watch the videos from home, consider using edupuzzle, to add your own voice or add questions within the video. Use in writing workshops to provide insights to art and culture and to into thoughts and feelings. Study written works alongside the art of past time periods. Bring unlimited, world-class resources to each class. Gifted classes will devour this website. Provide this link on your class website to offer students extra challenge and exploration.

See the famous Seven Wonders of the Ancient World through this virtual tour. Some included pages have 3D images, there is a short description of how to view them for those not familiar with this. You can follow the tour in order through use of links on the page, or there is a link to a map that can be used to complete the journey. Each page with an ancient world wonder includes some pictures, quick facts, and a lengthy description of its history and significance. There are quite a few advertisements on the site; so it may be best to show this site on your interactive whiteboard before assigning to students so that they can be shown how to remain on the correct page!

Some examples of topics include Native Americans, Civil War, Shakespeare, myths, melodrama, adjectives, monsters, baseball, and countless others! Be sure to check out the category "Featured Resources" There are many interactive lessons: some with video, audio, or slideshows. The lessons provide an estimate of time required and complete, step-by-step instructions. There are printables included with some of the lessons.

Use this site to display an interesting "this day in history" on your interactive whiteboard or projector each day. Use as a resource for students to research events during historical time periods being studied in class. Create a scavenger hunt to review dates in history - give students a list of events and have students find them on the calendar. For a more in=depth experience, share Teachers First's Dates that Matter, then have students create their own set of Dates That Matter style question prompts and provide a "Why Does it Matter" response for one of the events found here. The British Museum presents this visually stunning site about the "cradle of civilization," Mesopotamia. Approach your study from one of several perspectives: geography, time, gods and goddesses, or writing. Each module has information, some extension narrative, and a challenge game (with requires Shockwave). For teachers, the best part is the Staffroom section which offers step by step information about using the site in the classroom. Start there to quickly discover how you can best use this resource.

An interactive whiteboard or projector will take advantage of the strong visual impact of this site, but it will also be useful for individual exploration by students either in a computer cluster or from home. Students can try the "challenge" games as an extension, or for those who finish other work quickly. Bookmark the site (or save in favorites) for independent research.Challenge students to research a various portion of this site and create a multimedia presentation (either independently or in cooperative learning groups.) How about having students use a tool such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. This site allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location (on a map) where the story takes place. Challenge students to narrate while the exact location is shown on a map! What a fabulous way to link history, geography, and presentation skills!

In addition to browsing by title, teachers can filter worksheets by subject area, grade level, and skills, making it easier to find materials that align with instructional goals. The site offers worksheets in both PDF and Word formats, allowing teachers to edit and customize questions as needed. Because resources are user-submitted, all materials should be previewed carefully for quality, appropriateness, and classroom fit. Teachers should also follow district and school guidelines regarding movie use, including licensing and content considerations. Use the worksheets to get students thinking about the science (or math, or other subjects) beyond these videos. Encourage students to create their own questions from the movie (reminding them of its relevance to your subject area), choose the best worksheets to use, and submit them. Require students to add thought-provoking questions tied to the content for further consideration. Use questions that go beyond factual recall to tie concepts together, explain phenomena, or uncover misconceptions. Continue the discussion of concepts beyond the paper through open discussion or blog posts. Rather than creating a worksheet, have your students create an interactive online poster using Genially, reviewed here.

Use the Roman numeral converter to enter a year (ex. 1500.) Note the Roman Numeral that corresponds to the number. Enter another number (ex. 1499) and note the difference. Share the converter on your projector or interactive whiteboard. Have students determine the rules for using Roman numerals based upon the results. Ancient mysteries can be a sure-fire way to get students excited about history. The gigantic statues on Easter Island are one of those mysteries. This site, associated with a NOVA episode, provides a lot of engaging information about the statues. There are shockwave-enabled exercises that challenge students to try and virtually move one of the statues, to compare the weight of the statues with other ancient monoliths, and an interactive map of the island. Understanding the amazing skills and abilities of these "primitive" people can give students insight into the development of technology over time.

The possibilities at this site are endless! Take advantage of the grade-appropriate activities, interactives, lesson plans, and printables. Have students work with a partner to try out the Brainstorm Machine. Use this site to create a writing station. After studying the genre, why not have students create illustrated virtual books of their own using a free tool such as Bookemon, reviewed here. Unfortunately, the included activity requires flash, which is not supported on all browsers; however, the lesson plans and activities provide a starting point for many lessons.

The site includes world maps, detailed timelines, and thematic essays that highlight connections between art, history, and society. By clicking the "Works of Art" link, users can search and filter artworks by time period, geographic region, or thematic category. Time periods span from 8000 BC to the present, and thematic categories cover areas such as African, Renaissance, Colonial, Medieval, Modern, and many more. The timeline features art from nearly every continent and encompasses diverse artistic traditions, making it a rich tool for classroom research, comparative study, and visual inquiry.

Spend some time strolling through the public baths of Rome, find out how they were constructed, and try your hand at constructing an aqueduct for a Roman city. This imaginative, interactive site introduces visitors to the architecture, entertainment, art, and foods found in one of the ancient world's most popular social venues. There is a lot to learn from this site and plenty of images and diagrams to go with the text. However, there are a few interactives that require Flash.
In the Classroom

Take a virtual tour of the current Pompeii exhibit at the Field Museum of Chicago with this site that brings the cataclysmic eruption to life. The true gem of the site is an interactive timeline that details and animates the events of August 24, AD 79. But be sure to check out the photo gallery - which includes images of frescoes, artifacts, and plaster and epoxy resin casts of some of the victims (a bit gruesome).
