Integrate this resource into a media literacy or history lesson to help students understand the legal and ethical use of digital content. Start a research project where students identify historical figures or events and use the chart to find primary sources that are officially in the public domain. To engage learners in the creative process, have them curate these found materials into a digital presentation. Enhance the activity by using Gimkit, reviewed here to create a live, gamified review that tests their ability to identify public-domain status across different scenarios from the chart. To extend the learning, have students use Mentimeter, reviewed here to participate in a real-time word cloud or poll where they reflect on why protecting intellectual property matters while still celebrating the freedom of the public domain. You must be registered and logged in to add items to your favorites.

Use this site to search for images that can be used in your classroom for a visual discovery activity. Select 3-5 of the more powerful images, placing them on separate slides of a PowerPoint show. Show each slide to the class for 1-2 minutes each, allowing students time to jot down what they observe, predict and infer about each image. After the class has finished with the slides, have a class discussion based on the notes that students took accompanying a replaying of the slide show. This is a great way to introduce or review a topic in a non-lecture format.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member

Critically Analyzing Information Sources: Critical Appraisal and Analysis - Cornell University
Grades
9 to 12tag(s): evaluating sources (54), resources (80)
In the Classroom
Teachers can introduce the Cornell University Library guide at the start of a research unit as a foundational lesson in source evaluation, walking students through the key criteria together before sending them off to find and assess their own sources -- turning it into a practical checklist that students refer back to throughout the entire research process. The guide works especially well as a reference tool during peer-review activities, where students use the evaluation criteria to assess not only their own sources but also those chosen by classmates, sparking meaningful conversations about credibility, bias, and the difference between reliable and unreliable information. For media literacy lessons, teachers can use the guide alongside real-world examples -- pulling up a mix of credible and questionable websites or articles and challenging students to apply the criteria to determine which sources hold up and which fall short, building the critical-thinking habits students need both inside and outside the classroom.Add your comments below (available only to members) | Become a Member
