Promote yourself for college or future jobs by creating your own "me portfolio" website. No matter your age or stage in life, in today's world you are what Google shows about you. Take control of your online presence to show your chosen audience what YOU want them to know. You are more than your Facebook persona or LinkedIn profile. about.me allows you to create a "hub" with links to your online projects you want visitors to see. Upload a photo, write a short piece about your interests, then link to your online content and social networks. There is also an Assets page where you can download the about.me logo and colors to add to other pages and projects you have on the web so visitors will link back to the hub and discover your other projects. The Terms of Use for about.me prohibit creating fictitious personas.

Counselors and teachers could work together to have high school students make about.me the place they use as a "branding" home for themselves online. Start by making your own About.me page to mange your own professional presence and use as an example. Suggest to students that they use a "me portfolio" on about.me for college apps, employment apps, etc. Using about.me is also the perfect opportunity to talk with students about their online presence and how outsiders might interpret what they decide to post on about.me or any social network. Along with that discussion you'll want to review Internet safety and privacy. Consider using Privacy and Internet Safety, reviewed here. If you teach gifted students (13+) who are working beyond your regular curriculum, start by having them create a real world presence using about.me, with parent permission of course. Use this space for them to publish links to their best work, especially projects that take on a life of their own long after the assignment ends. Have a student interested in international politics? Maybe STEM cell research? Have the share the class project that got the started along with essays about where they see themselves in ten years or portfolios of their related accomplishments, including those outside of school. This portfolio site is not something to "pile up" with everything. It is for them to present their best face to the public. Encourage them to take ownership of it.Edge Features:

In addition to music, using the search bar, Genius also offers annotations for literature, news, sports, TV shows, and movies. Search any section to find specific content or browse through the latest offerings. Install the Chrome extension to use Genius's Web Annotator and add your own notes to any web page or put genius.it in front of any URL to annotate and read other user's notes on any web page. If your district blocks YouTube, some portions may not be viewable. Important: Content is not moderated, be sure to PREVIEW and check for inappropriate content before using with students.

After creating an account, type Teacher's Guide in the search box to find the link for a very complete guide. The guide has information for using Genius in the classroom and creating accounts. Use the information found with literature selections to build Common Core skills analyzing informational texts. Use the site to post and share discussion assignments on specific articles or even parts of articles. Find a relevant article to your subject. Highlight the part that you want students to read. For younger students, keep it short to reduce the intimidating reality of too much information for kids. Attach a note with a discussion question for the students. Have them comment on the link in a "class discussion" as an outside assignment.Edge Features:

If you don't have a Microsoft Office subscription, no need to worry, access and create PowerPoints online with the free version found at the Office Online site. Start from scratch with a blank presentation or choose from the many templates on the site. After selecting a template, add text, images, draw, and incorporate all of the features of PowerPoint. The default option includes the Simplified (single line) Ribbon, turn it off to view the enhanced Ribbon with additional customization options. PowerPoints created at the online site save automatically to your OneDrive account that is accessible from any device. Use the share link to copy the link and email your presentation.

Vizzlo is a free chart maker site offering a wide variety of options for sharing data in different formats. Get inspired by visiting the gallery to view examples of the layouts and means for sharing data. To begin creating, sign in to your account and select "Create." If you know the type of chart you want, use the keyword search to find it. Next, browse through the page to see examples, or use the filters to find options by use, type, and alphabetical list. The possibilities include well-known charts, including timeline creators and pie charts, along with less familiar varieties such as puzzle charts. Select a chart to begin creating by using the features found on the dashboard. Personalize data, colors, and the page setup. When complete, download as a PNG image, share a link by email or embed the code into a website. Free plans offer many features and access to a wide variety of charts; however, all charts created using a free plan will include Vizzlo's dominant watermark on the image.

Bookmark this site to share data through many different formats and representations. Collect data in your classroom and quickly create a graph to represent it, then choose another design to share the data in another way. Share your charts by adding links or uploading images to blogs, wikis, or websites--share graphs on an interactive whiteboard or projector for better data analysis by the class. Graph results of a test, answers from students, favorite foods, fictitious budgets, class schedules, and anything applicable in your classroom. Use an informational text, and have students create a pie chart to understand how to read charts accompanying the nonfiction texts. Have cooperative learning groups create graphs to share on the class wiki. Create quick pie charts on your interactive whiteboard whenever you count class votes or encounter other data so students "see" data visualized regularly; visual students will have another way to absorb the information. The site's point system encourages you to return and participate within the network. Use the "Ask a question" box to post any homework question. Choose a subject and type the question. View questions others ask by browsing the latest questions or within subject categories. View questions and responses without creating an account. However, an account is required to post questions. Registration requires an email address or Facebook account. Although Brainly states that it is a homework help site for all ages, registration requires that users be 13 years or older.

Share Brainly as an online homework help resource with your students. If you aren't comfortable with students receiving too much homework help, ask students to let you know when this resource has been used and have them provide feedback on what they learned. This is also an excellent opportunity to discuss the reliability of your information source and recheck to ensure the answer is correct. If they see the responses as "hints" more than trustworthy answers, they will learn well. Often, students learn best from each other. Encourage your students to provide answers for other students through Brainly. Offer bonus points for debunking any Incorrect answers they find at Brainly and submitting them to you! Stressed? Unable to concentrate or complete a task? This tool will generate background sounds and colors to create a positive thinking environment! Choose from a variety of sounds that sooth and relax while promoting creative productivity. These sounds are much better than plain, white noise. Classic sounds for relaxation include thunder, rain, waves, summer night, forest, white noise, and more. Even Coffee House is a sound that is the general hum of a business and not distracting to your work. As the music plays, the background color changes through a variety of harmonious colors to match the mood of the sound. Click on multiple sounds to create your own mix that is sure to please. Note: Be patient for the music to start, and be sure to click the icon again to stop it before choosing another sound if not mixing them. There is also a link to click and be taken to a blank writing page. (It may not be a white background though, but rather red, yellow, or green.) Click on the lines on the right side of the site to access the writing area. Click the arrow to SAVE your work. Use the music to inspire your writing.

Be sure to share this link with students (and their parents) looking for less distracting sounds while brainstorming or working. Reading a book to the class or conducting a science lab? Turn up your speakers and use these background sounds as mood music to set the stage for your story. Why not listen to waves or water while studying it! Play a few minutes of relaxing sounds before a major test. Let a student "DJ" create a class relaxation or creativity soundscape. Consider using as background sounds for student presentations. After creating an account, begin using Teacher's Buddy by creating a new workspace for your activities. Select an age group and choose from the available tools. Follow the directions to provide the topic and context, and connect to your Google Drive to upload documents if desired. When finished, edit the content as you wish, then save the document to your Google Drive or share using the provided link. Find videos recorded by professional educators. These are not just the humdrum lecture type videos you might expect. These are dynamic speakers, energized by their desire to share what they've learned and know. The videos are even more appealing because of the professional animators who worked in the background (with the educators) to get the message across to the audience. You can search these videos by "Lessons" (under "Discover") and from there by subject, "Collections," is organized by theme, or by "Exploration." Every video has a "Think" section with multiple choice and open ended questions. If you get a multiple choice answer wrong you will receive a video hint to help you get it correct. Every video has a Dig Deeper section with additional resources for exploring the topic. You can take one of these videos, a video from YouTube, or any other video with a URL and "flip" them to make them your own. You can change the title, put in instructions, discard or keep the questions, create your own questions. In other words, you can make the video your own, to suit your needs. Once you save the video it will have a unique URL so you can track the progress and participation of anyone using it. Don't miss such clever offerings as David Hunter's video about the importance of geography concepts in deciding "How do you decide where to go in a zombie apocalypse?" Choose a video or create your own videos for students to use for review. After students view a video that has the questions, show one that doesn't, and have students generate questions for it. Assign videos for students to view at home or in the computer lab. Use them as a springboard for engaging writing prompts or to spark a discussion connected with a unit of study. Challenge students to do a compare/contrast activity using an online Venn Diagram tool, reviewed here. Most of the videos are less than twenty minutes, which makes it realistic to use them in a one-period class lesson or if you are implementing blended learning or flipped learning in your classroom or school (leaving class time for asking questions and clarifying).Show a video or two with your class and discuss the set up of the lesson. Discuss the difference between basic comprehension questions and open-ended questions. Show your students an inspirational video or two from TED reviewed here. As a class, pick out eight or ten of the TED videos and allow students to sign up to work on one of the videos. Have cooperative learning groups develop a TED Ed video lesson. You will need to proofread all work using a word processor, before allowing students to upload their questions on TED Ed.

Students upload images, PDFs, or Google Docs from any device to your educator account. After creating a class, follow the directions to add an assignment and adjust settings. Options include uploading documents for student use, setting due dates and times, and adjusting permission settings for student feedback. Enroll students in your class by providing a join code or uploading a CSV file to enroll students automatically. Provide feedback by clicking on any area of the student document to create a hotspot. Students find and click the hotspot to read and respond to feedback. If you teach students under 13 years old, follow the directions to provide school or district consent to sign up students. Free accounts offer unlimited classes with unlimited active assignments. The audio feedback is not on the free plan.

In the Classroom
Use Floop to provide timely and specific feedback for any assignment. Floop is a great resource for teaching students how to provide and respond to feedback in purposeful ways and engaging them in the learning process. Floop chose to use hotspots on documents to access feedback so that students have to revisit and refer to items shared. Take advantage of this by strategically placing feedback within documents in areas where students are to focus. For example, place a hotspot on an area with grammar mistakes that need correction and guide learning by asking students to revisit that portion of the text. Allow peer feedback when working on group assignments or create rough drafts to encourage students to provide input and direction as a class. After using Floop for several assignments, encourage students to reflect upon common mistakes found in their work. Extend learning by asking students to create a tutorial using FlexClip, reviewed here, explaining how to avoid these errors. One example will be in math class if a student makes an error in several assignments, such as forgetting how to borrow and carry when subtracting. When using a mobile device, the Merlin app asks a series of five questions starting with when and where, followed by choosing a basic body type and other questions. View the generated list of possibilities to find your bird and identify it! Merlin is capable of recognizing 400 of the most commonly encountered birds in the US and Canada. When you choose the bird, data is recorded with Merlin. Read more about your identified bird and listen to its bird song. The Merlin bird identifier is designed for beginning and intermediate bird watchers. Note: When using Merlin on the web, upload a photo of the bird, and then follow the prompts to place "pointers" on the bird image. The web version cannot be used to identify a bird and is different from the Merlin ID app.

Think of draft.io as a collaborative workspace that offers features to investigate ideas, solve problems, and draft plans to move forward with a designated workflow in place. Sign up using your email to begin, then choose from three workflow options. Use the dashboard to add notes, create drag and drop lists, upload documents and images, and add information from the web. Use the sharing options to invite others to edit the board or allow viewing only. Use the examples on your home page as inspiration, using draft.io in a variety of ways. Free plans allow members to use up to 500 objects in drafts, create an unlimited number of drafts, and have unlimited contributors.

Have students use draft.io to create storylines that include links and images to tell the story of events in history or to retell novels. Ask students to use draft.io to create mood boards to share the different works of artists or to demonstrate different types of architecture.
