Discover the power of storytelling through the work of the International Storytelling Center. The center's work includes three main categories: performance, preservation, and practice. Although many events are part of paid admission to the Storytelling Festival, the site contains many free resources. Start with the "Storytellers" link to learn about featured storytellers that include links to their websites. Select the area entitled "Initiatives" to find Freedom Stories and the Learning Library. Freedom Stories is an ongoing series that features performances and discussions focused on the topic of the Black Heritage of Appalachia. The Learning Library is an area for educators that includes lessons, storytelling toolkits, stories in action, and other classroom resources. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

Watch videos together and discuss how storytellers use different techniques to engage an audience. Use EdPuzzle, reviewed here, to create interactive video lessons by adding questions and notes to featured videos to guide students as they watch storytellers in action. As you encourage students to learn about storytelling, use activities found at ReadWriteThink, reviewed here, to help students plan and create stories. For example, use this lesson to create book trailers instead of book reports to guide students through a digital storytelling activity. As students gain confidence in storytelling, ask them to create a podcast series featuring their work. Buzzsprout, reviewed here, is a simple to use podcasting tool that offers up to two hours of free uploads per month.

Organize and annotate videos and files with Acclaim. Acclaim's step-by-step process and prompts makes creating courses, sharing course information, creating folders within courses, and adding videos or files almost effortless. The free registration is referred to as a demo. Register with email and create a course, a Course URL will be given. No need to copy it at this time. Clicking on the setting symbol on any course (and even folders) will give you the URL again. Students will need an email to join and access your courses and folders. Folders and courses can be made public or private. When prompted, upload files (including videos you created) from Dropbox, Google Drive, your computer, and others. Do this by "choosing" from a list, or using the "drag and drop" method. Add videos, your own recorded on a webcam, or from Vimeo or YouTube by pasting in their URL. Teachers and students can annotate videos at certain points with comments and questions. These comments and questions will receive a time stamp. If you organize your videos and documents within a course with folders, once students have registered with their email, you will need to go into the folder settings and give them access. Acclaim is 100% web based, and it is mobile friendly for all devices.

Acclaim is a terrific tool for any teacher who likes to show and discuss certain aspects of videos in class. No more talking over the video or pausing to ask a question or make a comment. Use Acclaim in class to pause and have the discussion questions visible from the video. This works exceptionally well if you're in a blended classroom or want to flip a lesson and have students watch the video from home and be prepared to discuss in class, or if you use stations in your classroom. Students can also put in questions for clarification at the time they are watching. Share Acclaim with research groups for uploading documents and videos they are thinking of using in presentations and projects. Never be embarrassed by mispronouncing a word again! This site has discrete pronunciation lessons featuring video broadcasts of pronunciation trouble spots. Each video link suggests further video lessons that may be related to the target pronunciation task. Text explanations explain that rhythm, stress, and intonation all contribute to understandable pronunciation. In addition to difficult sounds, lessons include poems, commonly mispronounced words, and words that look the same but have different pronunciation. Explanations of each lesson, found on the same page as the video, explain the sound using the International Phonetic Alphabet, explain the sounds using linguistic terms, and finally, describe where the tongue and lips should be to make the correct sound.

Share this game during the Hour of AI. Begin class with a "Two Truths and a Lie" icebreaker using everyday facts, then introduce the AI version from the website. Have students guess which statements might have been created by AI to start a discussion about how machines mimic human communication. Guide students to research examples of AI-generated content, such as news articles, art, or social media posts. In small groups, they can analyze clues that reveal when something might not be human-made and share their reasoning with the class. Magic ToDo uses artificial intelligence (AI) to break down tasks into a list of step-by-step directions to complete the job. Enter your prompt or activity into the chat box to begin, then use the pepper icons to select the specificity of directions. One pepper provides an essential list; five peppers offer the most detailed steps. Press enter after adding your prompt and choosing the level of directions to provide to view your results. Open the list by clicking the blue wand next to your prompt; hovering over the blue wand will show "break down the item." After viewing the list, use drag and drop features to change the order of steps in the list if desired, or choose the blue wand next to any item on the list to create additional steps. Other options in a dropbox next to each step of the directions include determining the approximate time to complete that step, editing the information, or deleting the step. Click the checkbox in each step as it is completed for a visual look at the progress in completing the task.

Use Magic ToDo as a professional tool for creating to-do lists to complete upcoming tasks, such as preparation for parent-teacher conferences, writing long-term lesson plans, preparing for substitutes, and more. Share Magic To-Do with students to create a guide for planning on completing long-term projects. Show students how to use the estimated time feature to help them understand the time required to complete all project steps. To help students stay on track, ask them to create a to-do list for their upcoming project, take a screenshot of their list, and share it with you. Then, ask for weekly screenshots that show each student's progress in completing the project and ask them to use the checkboxes to mark completed items. If students fall behind, have short conferences to determine what is holding them back and provide support as needed. Generate any image you can describe with text using the online image generator from Canva, reviewed here. Canva employs three tools (apps) to generate images - Magic Media, Dall-E by Open AI, and Imagen by Google Cloud. Begin by selecting the link to generate images, then select the tool of your choice. Magic Media is built into Canva's design tools and is accessible when creating a design. Dall-E generates realistic images and art; Imagen turns text into photorealistic images. Use Dall-E or Imagen in an existing design or create a new one. After selecting an app, add a text description of the image to generate, including as much detail as possible. Continue revising your text until you are satisfied with the image, then add filters, effects, or other elements available from Canva's library to complete your image. Follow the directions to add your image to your Canva library, include it in a presentation, or share it directly with any supported platforms.

Figma is a collaborative, online design tool that allows members to create websites, applications, logos, and more. One beneficial resource included in Figma is Figjam, an online collaborative whiteboard. Figjam features include a built-in chat, auto-layout, and features that allow you to create visually appealing and interactive presentations. Create a free account and log in to your account to explore the Figma community to find inspiration that includes files, templates, plugins, and widgets. Use the filters to narrow down searches to include free items to make browsing more productive. Share Figma and Figjam creations with others using a link or embed code. The free plan includes three Figma and three Figjam files; however, educators can upgrade to the professional program for free. Professional plans include what is available under the free plan and unlimited Figjam files for free, team libraries, and audio libraries. FYI - In October of 2024 Google Jamboard will sunset (close down). The good news is Figjam will have a tool to convert Jamboards to Figjam.

For example, create trading cards when studying historical characters or as a resource for understanding novels with complex plots involving many characters. Additional templates shared at Figma for Education include base ten math lessons, research project guides, and a storyboard template. Ask tech-savvy students to explore Figma and Figjam and share tutorials on how to use different tools. Turn your blog in to a PDF book featuring all your blog's entries and comments. This tool works for the following blog tools: WordPress, LiveJournal, and Blogger. Creating the PDF book is simple. Export your blog by following the directions given for each specific type of blog and then upload the file to BlogBooker. All your content and comments are assembled into a high-quality PDF file. Note that this process can take a few minutes or longer depending on the size of your blog. This is a great way to print your BlogBook or make an archive/backup of the blog. It could also be useful for students and educators as a way to save a blog as a portfolio item. At the time of this review WordPress, LiveJournal, and Blogger were all 100% FREE!

Strikingly allows you to make beautiful, one-page websites quickly without any coding experience. View sites on any device. Quickly connect to social media, track analytics, and add contact forms easily. Create an account using email and a password to begin. Choose a category from business, personal, or portfolio to choose a template and begin editing. Click each section to edit. Upload images from your computer or many other options such as Dropbox, Instagram, and Picasa. When finished, choose the Publish button to personalize your url. Share via Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), or by emailing the url. Free plans allow for one page per user. However, you can earn points to access additional content by "Liking" Strikingly on Facebook or other options. There is a 5 MB limit to the monthly bandwidth (traffic) for free sites.

Collect a master list of links to student pages on your classroom website, wiki, or blog for easy access. Create a handy mobile-friendly page to share resources and information during field trips or outside activities. Follow the links to download the software onto your computer to use with a variety of recording needs. Create audio using your files or create new files using your microphone or uploaded files. This is the perfect place to create your mixtapes!

Use Audacity in a variety of ways in your classroom. Let students become familiar with creating audio files by practicing voice recordings and experimenting with Audacity's editing tools. As students become familiar with this tool, use its many features to create background audio for podcasts, to create podcasts, or to record audio instructions for lessons.
