In the Classroom
Begin a new unit by showing students an image, a short video clip, or an artifact related to the topic. Have them record what they see, what they think it means, and what they wonder about. As a class, brainstorm what students think they know, what puzzles or questions they have, and how they could explore further. Have them post ideas on a shared chart or Padlet, reviewed here to revisit and update throughout the unit. Use the Compass Points Routine (N = Needs, E = Excitements, S = Suggestions, W = Worries) before a group project or discussion. The Wheel of Life template is an interesting addition to current classroom resources for evaluating literary or historical characters. Ask students to share their thoughts on the essential characteristics to include when assessing characters and ask them to justify their inclusions. For example, when discussing Abraham Lincoln, is it important to include wealth, or is there a better trait to include that defines his impact on society? Ask groups of students to create a Wheel of Life based upon characters, then compare and contrast what they included and found necessary to include as character traits. Use student-created templates to highlight important information to include when writing biographies or when creating presentations. If you have not tried a wiki yet, visit the TeachersFirst Wiki Walk-Through for a detailed, step-by-step explanation and starter help, including dozens of ideas for ways to use a wiki in your classroom. Before implementing this site in your classroom, take some time to teach students how to edit and add information. This site is not WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), meaning that when editing a page, you see the markup information. Allow students time to play in the site's "sandbox" to preview and learn how to add information. Create and use a wiki to collaborate and compile information on any classroom research projects. For example, have your class work together to add resources and web links when researching the causes of the Civil War, plants and animals found in different habitats, or to share math problem-solving ideas and links. The first part, Tough Beginnings, is very interesting, as it describes how Maya didn't speak for five years and why. Once you get through that part and the accompanying Think Piece, let students read the rest in pairs or small groups. Miro - Miro

Ask older students to use Miro as a collaborative tool for projects. Have students use Miro to develop storylines that include links and images to tell the story of events in history or retell novels. Ask students to use Miro to create mood boards to share the different works of artists or demonstrate different architecture types. Miro is also an excellent choice for use as a collaborative tool for large projects to brainstorm ideas, assign tasks, and document progress. Use Miro with students as part of your science experiments to share the steps of the experiment, document hypotheses, and add images and reflections upon the outcomes of the experiment.
