In the Classroom
Begin a new unit by showing students an image, a short video clip, or an artifact related to the topic. Have them record what they see, what they think it means, and what they wonder about. As a class, brainstorm what students think they know, what puzzles or questions they have, and how they could explore further. Have them post ideas on a shared chart or Padlet, reviewed here to revisit and update throughout the unit. Use the Compass Points Routine (N = Needs, E = Excitements, S = Suggestions, W = Worries) before a group project or discussion. Zight (formerly known as CloudApp) is a screen recording tool with features for collaboration and integration with other cloud-based tools. After downloading Zight, follow the directions to install and use it on your device. Use the included tools to trim and cut videos or create GIFs. When finished, save and generate a link to your clipboard. Other features include the ability to do real-time annotations while you are recording your screen and editing tools to trim and cut recordings. Zight integrates with Slack, Microsoft Teams, and others. Free accounts offer one user up to twenty-five items with ninety-second recording times.

Use the Wheel of Life to create a visual image for evaluating historical and literary characters. The wheel offers up to eight categories to edit and use in evaluations. Begin with the included examples, such as citizenship, health, and joy, or click on any category titles to change them to fit your needs. After identifying categories, use the slider bars to rate your character in each category using a scale of 1 to 10. As ratings are assigned, the display on the wheel adjusts to reflect the rating and matches the color on the slider bar. Next, use the text boxes on the right side of the screen to give your wheel a title and explain each of the choices made. When finished, save or print your Wheel of Life.

The Wheel of Life template is an interesting addition to current classroom resources for evaluating literary or historical characters. Ask students to share their thoughts on the essential characteristics to include when assessing characters and ask them to justify their inclusions. For example, when discussing Abraham Lincoln, is it important to include wealth, or is there a better trait to include that defines his impact on society? Ask groups of students to create a Wheel of Life based upon characters, then compare and contrast what they included and found necessary to include as character traits. Use student-created templates to highlight important information to include when writing biographies or when creating presentations. Lessonstream offers 70+ English lessons originally intended for multilingual learners. They are divided by ability levels, listed according to topic, language aim, learner type, and lesson time. Each lesson includes images or a video, preparation tasks, text prompts and then the lesson plan. Many include additional printouts to supplement the lesson. Explore the site in several ways: browse all lessons page by page, time needed for lesson, learner type, main activity, language aim, or materials. Download lessons using the PDF link provided with each lesson. "Pinned" images provide age level information, activity type, and language skill addressed for each activity. Most lessons are aimed at middle school learners and above. However, there are several for younger students and worth taking a look if you teach younger grades.

Before implementing this site in your classroom, take some time to teach students how to edit and add information. This site is not WYSIWYG (what you see is what you get), meaning that when editing a page, you see the markup information. After reading a short story or chapter, have students use a storyboard template to illustrate key events in sequence, helping them understand the story and identify plot elements. Have students choose a character and use a storyboard to demonstrate how they change over time, including their thoughts, emotions, decisions, and turning points, with visuals and brief captions. The Kids Discover unit on Maya Angelou introduces students to the life and impact of the renowned author, poet, and activist through engaging, student-friendly content. The unit is organized into sections that explore her early life, career achievements, and lasting influence, helping students understand the person behind her powerful words. It includes a variety of features such as informational text, images, timelines, and "Think Piece" discussion questions that encourage critical thinking and reflection. The resource also offers three different reading levels, allowing teachers to easily differentiate instruction for diverse learners. Additional vocabulary and word-based activities support comprehension and skill development. This unit is geared toward 3rd-6th-grade readability (Lexile level 750-890). Introduce your students to this unit on your interactive whiteboard or a projector. The first part, Tough Beginnings, is very interesting, as it describes how Maya didn't speak for five years and why. Once you get through that part and the accompanying Think Piece, let students read the rest in pairs or small groups. Miro is a robust interactive whiteboard tool. Zoom in and out of the whiteboard to make it any size for viewing and adding information. Miro includes many templates for creating flow charts, mind maps, and planning activities. After creating an account, add a new board. Use the dashboard to add notes, templates, add comments, upload items from your computer, and much more. Collaborate with others by sharing the URL for your Miro board. Free accounts allow you to include an unlimited number of team members and create three editable boards.

Ask older students to use Miro as a collaborative tool for projects. Have students use Miro to develop storylines that include links and images to tell the story of events in history or retell novels. Ask students to use Miro to create mood boards to share the different works of artists or demonstrate different architecture types. Miro is also an excellent choice for use as a collaborative tool for large projects to brainstorm ideas, assign tasks, and document progress. Use Miro with students as part of your science experiments to share the steps of the experiment, document hypotheses, and add images and reflections upon the outcomes of the experiment.
