After installation, personalize Certify'em within any form to create a certificate upon completion of a minimum score. Certify'em is an excellent addition to every Google Forms members' toolbox. Create and share certificates with students for successful completion of quizzes and tests. Use Certify'em as a means for differentiating instruction by allowing students to take a pre-assessment test before starting a new unit. Create an account to begin, then add an assignment that includes grade level, background information, and the essay prompt. Next, choose from available rubrics or design your own. Upload up to 40 student documents to grade. Owler AI accepts PDFs, DOCx, and text files and submits them to receive feedback. When complete, Owler AI explains the score received, suggestions for improvement, and follow-up questions that can be shared using the provided link. As always, when using AI tools, it is important to remember that they aid teachers; however, they don't replace personalized teacher feedback.

Visit the pricing page for the robust list of free offerings, including 2D and 3D character animations and PDF editing tools. Get started by opening the Explore dropdown at the top of the page and selecting from the available options. As you begin creating, choose from the many templates and follow the links to build and edit your design. Have students create a habit of mind character sketch with Google Drawings, reviewed here. They can choose a character from a book and identify which habits the character uses or lacks. They can write a short explanation and illustrate the character demonstrating the habit in a key scene. Assign students to design a toolkit for a habit of mind. In small groups using Canva for Education, reviewed here, they create posters, bookmark reminders, or short scripts for morning announcements that teach their classmates how to use a specific habit. These tools are shared with the grade level or displayed in the classroom as ongoing reminders. Choose one habit of mind, such as persisting, and give students a quick challenge, such as building a tower from index cards and tape. This TeachersFirst Reading Trek, based upon the novel Currents authored by Jane Smolik, a historical novel about three girls who live in different places but are connected by a bottle that travels across the ocean. The Reading Trek provides a virtual field trip of resources using the Maps features of Google My Maps, reviewed here. The Reading Trek includes a map link, KMZ file, and PDF guide for using the resources in the classroom. The list of ideas includes suggestions for working with maps based upon the novel and extension activities. In addition, find several additional resources suggested for further consideration. Activities are correlated to Common Core Standards, National Curriculum Standards for Social Studies, National Core Arts Standards for Visual Arts, and Next Generation Science Standards.

In the Classroom
Use the suggested activities as a guide to teaching Currents as part of your reading instruction curriculum, or integrate the book into Social Studies content when teaching about immigration. Use a timeline creation tool such as the ones found at Canva's Timeline Infographic Templates, reviewed here, to help students visually represent the events and interactions of the three main characters within the story. Use the model shared in this Reading Trek using Google My Maps, reviewed here, and ask students to create a virtual field trip of other novels or events studied. In addition to adding pinned locations, ask students to add photos and videos to enhance their storytelling through maps.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

This installment in a series of articles about implementing Common Core in elementary focuses on argument/opinion writing and reading activities that can go together. The CCSS require that all students work to become independent writers of three types of texts: narrative, informational/explanatory, and opinion/argument and recommend that the time spent on each type in the elementary grades be roughly the same. Find ideas to implement this shift. The article is intended for elementary teachers as part of our Help! I lost my library/media specialist series.

Use filters on this page to find examples by difficulty level or type of animation project. The tutorial videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Wick Editor offers beginners and advanced participants opportunities to create animations and games. Share this site with some of your more "techy" students and allow them to explore and develop, then ask them to become experts and share their ideas with new participants. Use the examples to find ideas for incorporating animation into many different lessons.
