Created for college classrooms, the models are quite sophisticated and may be best used by advanced students or as a whole-class activity. These models provide real-world application of mathemetical and scientific concepts that are certain to excite budding scientists. The desciptions include computer software specifications for successful use. Some examples of applications include: a model for biogeography and the impact of mainland species pool, area of the island, and distance of the island from the mainland on the species available on the island; a 3D mathematical model of various factors' impact on the growth of tree branches; and a worksheet that simulates the population growth of two interacting species

Requires graphing calculator(s). The site is plain-vanilla, but the content is good. Most activities include both student sheets and also Teacher Notes and Explanations. Includes most high school math subjects and many middle school, as well. Even includes problem-solving strategies. The activities are separated by calculator model, so you can be certain you have an activity that works on your calculators. This collection was created by a high school/college teacher in Ohio, not Texas Instruments.

Google Maps is a free mapping tool for exploring places, planning trips, and understanding the relationships between locations. Search for an address, landmark, or business, then zoom in and out or switch to Satellite view to explore imagery of the area. Where available, use Street View's yellow Pegman icon to explore panoramic views of streets and surroundings. These images are not live, and their age and coverage vary by location. Google Maps also helps users find nearby businesses, schools, parks, and other points of interest, get directions, and share locations or routes. A free Google account lets you save favorite places and organize them into lists. The service works in a web browser and is available as a free app for Android and iOS. On a computer, supported maps can be embedded in websites using the sharing menu. For creating custom maps with markers, layers, and imported location files, use the related Google My Maps tool.

In the Classroom
If you teach geography, this one's a must. It is also helpful for showing students WHERE a story or news event takes place. In lower grades, use it to show students the basics of their community. Teach map skills by showing students their own community. Zoom in on their street or on the school. This site and its more sophisticated cousin, Google Earth, are great on an interactive whiteboard. Set up a class Google account (or use student accounts if permitted). Have students create their own custom route plans to tour historic sites. Challenge math students to plan the most economical route to visit several vacation destinations, including gas mileage and gas prices. Have students create placemark files of the important places in the life of a famous person or the route traveled by a particular unit during the Civil War. Have student groups create placemarker files to show environmental sites, habitats, landforms, or anything you can place on a map. Embed projects in a class wiki using the handy embed code offered as a sharing option. Not comfortable with wikis? Make this virtual jigsaw puzzle site available for those inevitable moments of "downtime" in the classroom. Choose a topic from the gallery (preferably one that relates to your curriculum), select a level of difficulty (number of pieces), and start the challege. These puzzles are not only a lot of fun, but good exercises for developing spatial skills. The pop-ups are annoying but can be blocked by Windows XP. Allow time for the site to load. Check the Frequently Asked Questions link (at the bottom of the page)for troubleshooting if you are having difficulty making the puzzles work.

Combine a brain-warming activity with a bit of review, and create your own jig-saws for students to solve! First, access the section entitled "Turn your photos into puzzles," and select an image pertinent to a specific unit and upload it to the site. Once the jigsaw puzzle has been created, have students open the puzzle on individual computers and compete to see who can get the best time putting the image back together! The best images to use would be diagrams, or model images of a particular object. This site works amazingly well for science classes were students need to be familiar with specific images. Bring energy and water conservation out of the textbook and into students' homes with GetWise, the online resource for LivingWise'®, WaterWise,"?, EnergyWise'®, and related education programs developed by AM Conservation. The site supports hands-on learning about natural resources, renewable and nonrenewable resources, energy and water efficiency, and household conservation. Participating classrooms may receive student guides, take-home workbooks, teacher materials, and kits containing practical conservation products such as LED bulbs, efficient showerheads, and faucet aerators. Teachers can also access additional activities, educational links, FAQs, enrollment information, and state academic standards, although some digital teacher materials require a program login. Availability depends on sponsorship in the school's area, and program kits are limited each school year.

Have students conduct a home energy or water-efficiency audit using ideas from GetWise, then compare their findings in small groups and identify three conservation changes that could make the greatest difference. Invite pairs to calculate or estimate how small household conservation changes could reduce energy or water use over a week, month, or year, then explain which change they would recommend to a family and why. Assign small groups different conservation topics and have them create an informational flyer or presentation with Adobe Creative Cloud Express, reviewed here, which supports flyers, presentations, social media posts, and more. Require each product to include a problem, supporting facts, and practical actions families can take.

Although not all the links are active, several problems and solutions are available to find and use in the classroom.
In the Classroom
After sharing the site on your interactive whiteboard, add a link to this site on classroom computers for use as a center. As students try solving the puzzles, enhance learning by asking them to reflect upon their learning through blogs. edublogs, reviewed here, is a free blogging platform developed for classroom use. Modify learning by asking students to include screenshots of their work and discuss their problem-solving tips as they work through the different puzzles. Use a screenshot tool such as Awesome Screenshot, reviewed here.

Select a topic or age group and then browse through the offerings. "Math for Everyone," an especially useful link for older students, offers authentic math problems related to figuring out tips, simple and compound interest, and the cost of electricity. Beware of the "Ask an Expert" feature - a fee is involved in receiving a solution, but past questions and answers can be viewed free of charge.

Use the images on this site to compliment a lecture on the inventions of the 20th century. While the test is interesting, it might be a little much for a class for of lower-level readers. Include the images as a way to capture the simplicity of original designs, and compare the initial plans of these inventions to the mega-products they are today.
