This site contains all of the information needed for teachers to use the 16 classroom activities of SkyMath, including the module itself. The SkyMath Module, "Using the Science and Language of Patterns to Explore Temperature," calls for the development of several mathematical concepts using a single central concept from weather --- temperature. The SkyMath curriculum uses real-time weather data, involves classrooms in hands-on mathematics, elicits higher-level thinking, engages students in purposeful projects, and calls for reflection and communication.

This section of the Cut-the-Knot site offers several neat interactive probability illustrations, along with descriptions of several classic probability problems, each of which illustrates a different aspect of probability. These are great, "Why is it that...?" discussion starters, and well worth a look.

tag(s): probability (129)

In the Classroom

Open the probability problems on the interactive whiteboard or projector, having students attempt to work on the problems in cooperative learning groups. This is a great way to review a unit on probability, as are the sections at the top entitled "What is probability?" Share the site on the class wiki or web page to allow students to access it in and out of the classroom for review.

The site has enough examples that you could create your own "trail," or you can learn more about the national project. Neat idea.

This fabulous collection of interactives and tools supports math and science concepts across grades 3-12. There are also lessons to accompany the activities and a dictionary of math terms. Sort by "audience" to narrow the listings by level: 3-5, 6-8, or 9-12. Version 3.0, released in 2010, provides better searching by activity type and curriculum term. Click at the bottom of the screen for an "interactivate Guide" to explain the various ways you can search, or simply click on Learner Activities to browse and see the breadth of offerings in areas such as Number and Operations, Geometry, Algebra, Probability, Statistics, Modeling, Discrete, and more.

tag(s): numbers (121), operations (71)

In the Classroom

Mark this one in your teacher favorites, then return to select activities in support of math or science units. Many curriculum topics have multiple offerings, so let students choose from among three to five activities for homework, in-class practice, or student- demonstrated skills on an interactive whiteboard or projector. Rotate different student groups to run the demonstrations and explanations of the interactives or have them write explanations of them on a class wiki for others to use for review and practice.

This archive contains the biographies of more than 3,000 mathematicians. They are accessible from either an alphabetical or chronological biographical index. Biographies are suitable for a computer-based presentation.

tag(s): biographies (96)

In the Classroom

Use the "Mathematician of the day" section on the interactive whiteboard or projector as a brain-warmer at the beginning of class. Highlighting important mathematicians can help connect the ideas to people, making the subject more tangible. What's great about the mathematicians mentioned is that there are links explaining who they are and their significance in the math world. Try testing students on identifying the scholars before exploring the biographies.

This site provides a variety of activities for exploring knots made from pieces of rope. Students can make and verify observations about knots, classify them, combine them, and find ways to determine if two knots are alike. The activities outlined here can be combined to form a single lesson about mathematical knots, or a larger investigative unit that extends over a longer period of time. The sequence in which the activities are listed is roughly in order of increasing difficulty and challenge. The site contains a vocabulary section, an activities section, and an evaluation section.

In the Classroom

Get out your rope and try to tie some of the knots suggested on this website. For each, talk about its steps and components, comparing and contrasting them as you go. Come back to the activity often, and try more difficult ones as you progress in difficulty.

The IceCube Neutrino Observatory is an engaging science resource from the University of Wisconsin-Madison that introduces students to one of the world's most unique astronomy experiments. Located deep beneath the Antarctic ice at the South Pole, IceCube detects tiny particles called neutrinos, helping scientists study distant stars, black holes, supernovas, and other cosmic events. The site features news articles, videos, photographs, interactive explanations, and educational materials that help students explore particle physics, astronomy, Earth science, and scientific research. Teachers can use the website to introduce scientific inquiry, careers in STEM, Antarctic exploration, and the ways scientists use technology to investigate the mysteries of the universe.

tag(s): antarctica (28), space (249), STEM (372)

In the Classroom

After learning about the IceCube Observatory, have students work in teams to design and sketch their own particle detector. Students should explain how their detector would collect data and what scientific questions it could help answer. Students can investigate the location of IceCube in Antarctica and create a map using Google My Maps, reviewed hereshowing the observatory, the South Pole, and other Antarctic research stations. They can add facts about climate, geography, and scientific research conducted there. Older students can examine IceCube data visualizations and graphs from the website. Students can identify patterns, make observations, and discuss how scientists use evidence to draw conclusions about events occurring in space.
