Choose from six different literacy strategies to find instructions on using the strategy, templates, examples, children's books to teach the strategy, and much more. The interactive chart also includes information on when and how to use each strategy. Many strategies include a video showing how to use these ideas in the classroom. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable. This site is a must-have for any reading teacher!

Amaze has animated videos providing factual and informative information about sexual development to adolescents aged 10-14. Their goal is to counter misinformation about puberty, sex, and sexuality while developing accurate representations of healthy body development and relationships. It is important to take note of ratings when viewing videos on Amaze. Green indicates videos appropriate for all young people and blue indicates videos suitable for those of the older range from 10 to 14 years old. Choose videos from the different categories or select favorite videos from the home page. Each video includes a "dig deeper" button with additional information for discussions. Be sure to check out the section for educators containing lesson plans for 5th and 6th grades, book suggestions, and other resources. Registration isn't necessary; however, it allows users to save favorites and create personalized video playlists. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

When appropriate, share a link to videos on your class webpage. Amaze is an excellent site to share with parents as they face difficult issues that arise during the teen years. Mapping the Road to College is an interactive tool for exploring college information based on 5th through 9th grade Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) scores and compared to median ACT scores used for admission. Use the provided tools to select the date of last MAP testing, score range for reading and math, and state. The interactive map displays college profiles including on-track MAP scores, popular majors, and admission information. Click on different colleges to view their profiles and additional economic information.

Use Mapping the Road to College as a valuable tool for understanding and exploring college admission requirements. Share with middle school students to help understand the importance of standardized testing when applying to college. Older students will benefit from using the interactive to explore different colleges and universities from around the country and their academic profiles. Instead of having students use a pen and paper organizer exchange that with Padlet, reviewed here where they can make columns for comparing. Replace pen and paper and have students create blogs sharing information from their chosen college using a tool such as Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Share this short video with your class as part of any discussions on autism. Stop the video at different points along the way to discuss the information and develop knowledge of how to understand and work with autistic students. Backchannel Chat is an easy tool to manage if you are starting the process of integrating technology into your classroom. Resources include Interland, reviewed here, an online interactive that offers participants the opportunity to practice skills to combat phishers, hackers, and cyber bullies. The free curriculum, available for download, is best suited for grades 3-5; however, it is easily adaptable to other grade levels. Click the Educator tab on the top menu bar and find a teacher curriculum, ready to teach Google Slides, an Internet safety poster, certificates and badges for students, plus a lot more. All features of this site align to ISTE Standards.

Use "A True or False: Internet Safety Facts for Kids" as pre or post assessment or discussion starter. Project the infographics for students and/or parents to introduce or summarize a topic. Since information is mostly text, except for two infographics, use the articles for informational text reading selections. Improve learning and help students identify important words by having them use Wordsift, reviewed here. The text might be difficult to follow for ENL/ELL and younger students. Use Select and Speek, reviewed here, a text to speech tool that will allow these students to follow the text as the article or passage is read to them. Have students discuss or blog responses.The articles will make useful resources for a parent information night, to send home in newsletters, or to post on school websites. The pages are embedded into the SearchRPM website, so it can be easy to stray into the corporate side. Using this easy to follow website, students can gather information about fire safety, prevention and what to do if a fire occurs. Create an authentic audience by having older students extend their learning by creating a cartoon strip depicting the different tips and suggestions to share with younger students. In the Classroom
Use information from this site as part of your ongoing professional development and discussion within your school and district regarding educational issues. Have debate students use this site as a resource for topics or to find information for their viewpoint in a debate. Challenge students to read articles and write about how they would address the issues if placed in a position of power. Challenge students to create a multimedia presentation representing their viewpoint using Vevox, reviewed here. Vevox offers interactive features such as real-time polls and comments to keep viewers interested and involved in the presentation. This collection of free streaming videos, mostly under six minutes, supports school curriculum using material from NBC News, one of the largest news archives in the world. Topics include language arts, humanities and social sciences, and parenting information. The majority of videos feature STEM content. Specific sample topics include: Mysteries of the Brain, Writers Speak to Kids, Science of NFL Football, and many others. All videos include transcripts. Some have lesson plans and/or activities which are available in a side tab in the video window when launched. Most have closed captioning, and a few have a Spanish language option. The majority of NBC Learn, the educational arm of NBC News, is fee-based. This review is for the free material.

In the Classroom
This site is perfect for flipped or blended learning classrooms but will spark interest in most classroom lessons. Use the search box in the upper right corner to find free content of interest. The whole class can watch the videos, many of which are parts of a series. Create a Padlet, reviewed here, for each group and have individuals or small groups view and extend their learning by sharing information. The transcripts and close captioning will be helpful for struggling learners. Transcripts can be used alone for informational text reading practice.
