CT.gov is Connecticut's official state-government portal, organizing information by areas such as education, government, health, employment, public safety, transportation, and the environment. For educators, the strongest "ready to go" content appears within the Connecticut State Department of Education pages, where teachers can find standards, curriculum guides, lesson plans, instructional units, assessments, professional-learning materials, and links to primary-source and community resources. The mathematics section includes expert-reviewed K-12 units and lesson plans aligned with Connecticut Core Standards, while GoOpen Connecticut connects teachers with model curricula in mathematics, science, language arts, social studies, computer science, personal finance, digital citizenship, and Algebra I.

tag(s): civics (130), connecticut (3), digital citizenship (110), primary sources (146), states (128)

In the Classroom

Groups can collect agency links, quotations, images, and reflections on Padlet, reviewed here, to create a virtual Connecticut government resource board. Students can close-read a state-agency page, annotate evidence about an agency's responsibilities, and prepare a short explanation of how its work affects Connecticut residents. Extend civics learning with a mock public hearing, agency role-play, community-needs debate, or collaborative plan proposing how state resources could address a local concern.

Copyright questions rarely have one automatic answer, and this extensive reference helps educators examine the details before using, sharing, copying, or adapting protected materials. The Stanford Copyright and Fair Use Center explains copyright basics, permissions, educational uses, public-domain materials, releases, research procedures, and the four-factor fair-use analysis. It also offers summaries of court cases, flowcharts, checklists, codes of best practice, outside tutorials, and guidance related to images, multimedia, libraries, open educational resources, and online video. Some information is written for legal, library, or higher-education audiences, so secondary students may need teacher-selected excerpts and vocabulary support. The site emphasizes that educational purpose alone does not automatically establish fair use and that decisions require a case-by-case consideration of purpose, the nature of the work, the amount used, and market effect. The homepage also includes embedded YouTube presentations about copyright and artificial intelligence. If your district blocks YouTube, the video(s) may not be viewable.

tag(s): copyright (39), creative commons (29), digital citizenship (110), evaluating sources (54), media literacy (130)

In the Classroom

Be sure to share this site with your teaching colleagues and/or school librarians. Have students examine a fictional classroom copying scenario and apply the four fair-use factors, then write a decision that explains which evidence supports and weakens a fair-use claim. Ask students to design a copyright decision infographic with Adobe Express for Education, reviewed here, showing the questions classmates should ask before copying, remixing, or publishing protected material.

The National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association provide a list of 12 standards that offer guidance and resources to help students develop the language skills they need. Also included is a section entitled "Achieving High English Language Arts Standard: A Call to Join the Literacy Compact."

In the Classroom

Share these standards with students at the beginning of the year to provide them of some foresight of what's to come, and what they will have learned by the end of the year. Don't just entrust students to read these in a syllabi - introduce the site on the interactive whiteboard and explain each standard and how they will be accomplished, in detail.
