Create impressive word clouds from any text! What is a word cloud? Word clouds show not only the words in the text sample, but also display the frequency of the words by showing often used words in a larger font. No login or registration required. Click "Create a word cloud," enter or paste your text and then click "word it out." View your word cloud, drag the arrows on the sides of the screen to make larger or smaller, and change the colors and specifics of the word cloud in the space below. Click "Save" to save as either public or private (an email address is required to save.)
This site includes advertising.

tag(s): visualizations (16), vocabulary (260), word choice (12), word clouds (12), word study (59)

In the Classroom

You need to know how to copy/paste text passages (ctrl or command + C, then ctrl or command + V to paste. Think Velcro to stick it there!). If you wish to Save, you must join the site (email required). Alternately, capture the image using screen capture (apple/shift/4 on a Mac or Print Screen on a PC.)

Use a word cloud in virtually any class. With emergent readers, enter multiple words with the same consonant cluster or vowel sound, so they can SEE a visual grouping of that sound on your interactive whiteboard and guess the sound. Project a teacher-created word cloud at the start of a new lesson or unit and have students determine what the lesson will be about. Have students use word clouds to proof their own essays or stories. Use word clouds for students to identify the subject and frequently used words to check if they are on target with their intended message. Have students find overused words in their own writing as part of lessons on word choice. Teachers could create and save a word cloud then share it as a visual prompt for students to work individually or in groups to identify words they know (and the definitions) as well as the words they are unfamiliar with. Create word clouds of passages or stories and allow students to guess the author, title, subject, or meaning of the story. Underscore motifs in literature by creating clouds of passages, especially poetry. Have students work together to make clouds of alternative ways to say "said" or "went" in story-writing to post in your classroom as a reference. Create word clouds of opinion passages to determine the bias of the author and possible reasons for that specific opinion. Make word cloud posters on health topics such as the potential health risks of smoking. Make word clouds of different food groups. Create higher order thinking activities by approaching text in a unique way.

"See" daily news headlines in illustration form on this clever blog created by illustrator/designer Maria Fabrizio. Each day she chooses a headline to illustrate in a sort of visual riddle, and she also includes the link to the article that inspired it. The result: an engaging visual prompt that tempts your guess at one of the day's top stories. The news sources vary among various mainstream U.S. news sources, such as the New York Times, NBC, NPR, or USA Today. Challenge yourself to stay up to date and think visually. Cycle back through the daily entries since early 2013 or search by clickable tags to see the breadth of news represented here and find related stories. You can also sign up to receive the daily stories via email.

tag(s): news (222), visual thinking (17)

In the Classroom

Encourage students to connect with current events by sharing the daily post (or one per week) on your projector or interactive whiteboard as students enter homeroom or settle in for the start of class. If you teach reading, this is the perfect way to entice students to READ informational texts with a visual image in mind, adding a purpose to their reading of non-fiction. This is a very creative way to practice close reading, as students look for the reasons behind the illustrator's choices. Extend the activity by challenging students in reading OR social studies classes to create their own Wordless News illustrations to reflect a news story they find on their own. Share the challenges on a class wiki for other students to "guess" and include the links to the stories. Art teachers can use this blog as an example of the many ways artists find inspiration in everyday life. Even the very young can "draw" a news story they read. ESL/ELL teachers can use these illustrations to build speaking vocabulary as students discuss and guess the news stories and practice their language skills reading the actual text. Use this blog in social studies class to inspire historic " wordless news" stories with accompanying articles written by students (or primary source stories from the time). What would the illustration and article be like for the Emancipation Proclamation?

Explore the history and meaning of familiar words with Words of the World, a collection of short educational videos featuring experts from the University of Nottingham's School of Cultures, Languages and Area Studies. Each video traces a word's origins, explores how its meaning has changed over time, and connects its history to language, culture, and world events. Browse the collection to select individual words and watch the accompanying videos. Most videos are brief, making them useful for vocabulary lessons, language study, and cross-curricular connections with history and social studies. The videos provide an accessible introduction to etymology and demonstrate how language reflects cultural influences and historical events. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

tag(s): cross cultural understanding (167), vocabulary (260), vocabulary development (112), word study (59)

In the Classroom

Use Words of the World to introduce etymology, vocabulary, and the relationship between language and culture. Show a short video to start the lesson, then ask students to identify the word's origin, explain how its meaning has changed, and connect its history to a historical event or cultural influence. In English language arts, invite students to select an everyday word and research its history using reliable reference sources. In social studies, explore how trade, migration, conflict, and cultural exchange influence language. Extend the activity by having students create a short video or presentation explaining a word's origin and significance. You can also feature a word of the week and ask students to use it in discussion or writing. Preview videos before sharing them, since some topics and historical references may require additional context.

WordSift helps anyone easily sift through texts -- just copy and paste any text into WordSift and you can engage in a verbal quick-capture! The program helps quickly identify important words in the text. After entering text, several items will appear; first, a word cloud will display the 50 most frequently used words in the text. The most frequently used word will display as a word web in a visual thesaurus. Google image and video search results are also shown. One interesting feature is the ability to click on any word in the word cloud to display it in the thesaurus and in Google image and video searches. A great way to understand the WordSift tool is to try one of the sample texts offered, such as Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Be sure to check out the "About" link to discover many ideas for use in the classroom. Tips and videos are also available as guides. If you type in a shorter sentence, the site still creates a word cloud using its own related words (not in your original text). Be aware of the advertisements that appear with the word clouds. Advise students not to click on the ads.

Use WordSift to discuss different meanings of words using images presented through the site. This site isn't only for English teachers, share with Science and Social Studies teachers to use in their classrooms with reading texts in their content areas. ENL/ELL and learning support teachers will want to share this as a support for any reading assigned in regular classes. Be sure to show students how to copy/paste to WordSift texts from informational web pages and news stories on the web, as well. Wordtune is an AI writing assistant that helps users revise and refine text through tools for rewriting, paraphrasing, grammar checking, summarizing, and adjusting tone or length. Teachers can use it to model how writers make purposeful revision choices, such as making a sentence clearer, more concise, more formal, or more detailed. It may be especially useful during writing workshops, vocabulary practice, and research projects when students compare suggestions with their own drafts and explain which revisions best preserve their intended meaning and voice. Students should use Wordtune as a revision tool rather than a replacement for their own ideas, and teachers should review district AI use and privacy guidelines before classroom use. Free plans include daily and monthly use limits.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (358), grammar (142), summarizing (30), writing (304)

In the Classroom

Have students write a sentence from a draft, then use Wordtune to generate a few revision options. They can sort the suggestions into categories such as clearer, more detailed, more formal, or does not preserve my meaning, and explain which version they would choose and why. Have students revise an overly wordy paragraph from a teacher-created example. After making their own edits, they can use Wordtune's shortening or rewriting tools as a comparison, then identify which details should remain because they are essential to the main idea. During a writing unit, have students select two or three repetitive sentences from a draft. They can use Wordtune suggestions to explore stronger vocabulary or varied sentence structures, then revise only the parts where the changes improve clarity while preserving their voice.

In the Classroom

Use the interactive games found at Wordwall to use at computer stations or home to practice skills or prepare for upcoming quizzes and tests. Use the embed code to add your games onto your class website for easy student access. Instead of asking students to memorize dates or events, help them by organizing the information into common features. For example, during a Civil War unit, group together events taking place in different cities to help provide context for students. Include a link to your quizzes on your class webpage or blog for students to practice at any time using the URL or embed code. Enhance technology use and learning by having students create their own Z-A quizzes to share with peers when studying for tests or use as an introduction with class presentations. This quiz generator is also a great resource to use during professional development sessions with your peers. Create a quiz to increase your viewers' interest in your topic as you begin your discussions or as a final activity to review the information shared. Find many more ideas and examples for using WordWall on this curated list.

WordWanderer is a fascinating experimental visual tool that seeks to improve your experience with a text. See how it works by selecting from texts included in the dropdown box or copy and paste the text of your choosing. After making a selection, click the "wander" icon to use the tool. Hover your cursor over any of the words to highlight additional words connected to the original. Click on a word to view a list of uses of that word within the text. Select words and draw lines to view connections within the text. Use the options box to select types of speech to include in your visual or to hide common words. Be sure to look at the help box to understand the three different views offered within the WordWanderer interface.

In the Classroom

Use WordWanderer to explore and introduce many different types of text. For example, paste in a portion of a novel or chapter from a science or social studies text to share with students. Use the different features to explore connections between words and discuss vocabulary. Ask students to paste text from their work into this tool as a means for exploring their work in depth. Ask questions such as how often some words appear, can you find different adjectives, or did you use the same one too often? When finished, have students analyze their work by sharing the interactions found on WordWanderer by creating a screen recording using Free Online Screen Recorder, reviewed here.

Turn the words students already need to learn into short, game-based practice with WordyKid. The site lets users work with spelling lists, homework words, worksheets, reading pages, books, photos, and other text, and then practice vocabulary, reading, spelling, listening, speaking, writing, and translation through a variety of games. Game choices include Memory Match, Listening Bingo, Word Match, Speak the Word, Word Striker, Word Bowling, Word Flight, Magic Dictation, and other activities. The platform supports English, Spanish, Hebrew, Arabic, and Russian and includes level and reading-readiness settings, saved progress, parent statistics, child profiles, friends features, and leaderboards. Free access currently unlocks all games for 10 hours, so teachers should plan around that concrete usage limit.

In the Classroom

Have students enter the week's spelling words, complete several short WordyKid game rounds, then write down the three words they still need to practice and explain which spelling pattern caused the difficulty. Assign students to photograph or upload a teacher-prepared vocabulary sheet and turn the words into practice games, then use the resulting rounds as a station activity before a quiz. WordyKid specifically supports worksheets, photos, reading pages, and word lists as source material. Invite English learners to practice a targeted set of classroom vocabulary in English and another supported language, then create a simple bilingual reference sheet showing the word, translation, and an original sentence.

The site also features the Wombats video series, printable activities, and podcasts.
