Infuse an extra measure of history into your curriculum and tap into the richness of our nation's story while you build reading and listening skills. The books about the Civil War and related topics include a wealth of fictional and informational literature to share with your students. The lists and related activities are segmented into lower, middle, and upper elementary. There are Lexile''''® levels for the books (where available). In the Classroom
You may want to start your school year by sharing the three-part Empathy video series. Each video is five minutes and has a discussion guide. As a follow-up, use the Ripples of Kindness activity in small groups. Share younger students' observations on a whiteboard or poster. Older students can share their observations using a tool like Stickies.io, reviewed here. Stickies.io allows participants to add comments. Share other videos with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to introduce a video each week and explore the discussion questions together. These videos could be very useful when preparing and motivating students for upcoming standardized testing or at the beginning of a school year to set a tone that everyone can learn. Include a link to videos on your class web page for parents to discuss at home with their student, and be sure to send home the take-home questions with topics to talk about.

In the Classroom
Use this site as a learning center or station during a unit on folk tales and short stories. This would be a great way to encourage ELLs and lower-achieving readers to become interested in reading. Have students watch the stories on classroom computers, creating a timeline of the story and establishing the chain of events. This is a great way to get students thinking about timelines and to help those who are aided by the site's visual elements. Make sure to include headphones so that students won't disturb others.

Teachers can create or customize assignments using their own materials or explore activities available in Classkick's Assignment Library. Existing PDFs, slides, worksheets, and other lesson materials can be incorporated into activities for students to complete digitally. As students work, teachers can view their progress in real time, identify students who need assistance, and provide immediate feedback directly on their work. Students can also request help, and teachers can enable features that allow students to assist and provide feedback to their peers. Use Classkick in class, for blended learning or remote learning since you can see all students working from anywhere. Use Classkick to differentiate instruction based on students' current performance. Many students are motivated to learn at their own pace using online tools, and Classkick is an option providing lessons in a different format than currently available. If not using Classkick whole - class, it provides many options for helping and enhancing learning for individual students, use for homework, or as a temporary option for providing instruction to home-bound or remote learning students. As students learn through this type of management system, ask them to use a portfolio tool such as Mahara, reviewed here, to document and reflect upon their learning process.

When creating a class choose from privacy options such as invite only for attendees. Add content within modules for each class using tabs to upload or embed information. Once your content is complete, use the "Ready" toggle switch to make it accessible to participants. Use the "Invite" button to invite users using their email address.

Use the presentation tools to highlight information, add annotations, open a whiteboard, and more. Turn your slides into interactive questions to share with students and receive immediate feedback through the responses. Use the rewards option to give or take away stars to students based on your preferences; students move through levels to receive badges by earning rewards. Download ClassPoint to your Windows device by following the directions and prompts provided. Free accounts offer up to a twenty-five-student class size, five questions per PowerPoint, three draggable objects, three saved classes, and basic gamification. ClassPoint is not available for MacOS devices at the time of this review; however, it is being looked at as an option, so Mac users might want to check back to see if it becomes available.

Classroom Strategies contains a vast library of resources for teaching reading skills. Choose from six different literacy strategies to find instructions on using the strategy, templates, examples, children's books to teach the strategy, and much more. The interactive chart also includes information on when and how to use each strategy. Many strategies include a video showing how to use these ideas in the classroom. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable. This site is a must-have for any reading teacher!

Bookmark and save this site as an excellent resource for teaching literacy and reading. Use a tool like 3x3 Links, reviewed here, to be able to organize and locate your bookmarks in a snap! Share strategies as part of your ongoing professional development activities both in school and with your Professional Learning Network (PLN). Use an audio recording tool like Vocaroo, reviewed here, to record a student reading before and after using teaching strategies shared on this site. Share tips for reading strategies with parents using an online portfolio site like Seesaw, reviewed here. Seesaw provides tools for a class blog and sharing student work through images and videos.

Classroom Zen offers several tools to create a calming, relaxing atmosphere in the classroom. Choose from the categories of noise management, breathing, brain breaks, and typing practice. Begin your day with the Morning Warm-up with Mio, a daily show that lets classes choose topics to get your day off on a good note. Topics include the joke of the day, the wonders of science, the math minute, and more. Noise management tools include a noise monitor from Sleepy Mio and relaxing mountain and desert backgrounds that monitor classroom noise. Additional resources include breathing and mindfulness techniques and quick brain-break activities.

In the Classroom
Although the activities on this site are pretty basic, they offer many benefits as tools for classroom teachers. Include the Morning Warm-up with Mio to engage them as they prepare and to set a welcoming learning atmosphere, and customize the content for your grade level by selecting from the grade-band offerings and topic choices. All students will enjoy the quick brain break activities that encourage participation. Share daily breathing and mindfulness techniques on students' computers so they can access them during stressful or anxious periods.
