In the Classroom
Collect data in your classroom and quickly create a graph to represent it. Share through links or adding images to blogs, wikis, or websites. Share graphs on an interactive whiteboard or projector for better analysis of data by the class. Graph results of a test, answers from students, favorite foods, fictitious budgets, class schedules, and whatever else is applicable in your classroom. Use an informational text, and have students create a pie chart to understand how to read charts that accompany the informational texts. Have cooperative learning groups create graphs to share with the class on the class wiki. Create quick pie charts on your interactive whiteboard whenever you count class votes or encounter other data so students "see" data visualized on a regular basis; visual students will have another way to absorb the information. You will want to play with this tool before using it in class. Use it anywhere numerical data is collected and is best shown in a chart. Collect data in a science, survey, or math class and display it using different graphs to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of using each graph type. Use for quick creation and sharing of created graphs. Create charts together easily on an interactive whiteboard when introducing the different types. Have students operate the board while others offer instructions on what to do next. Use graphs to portray different sets of data about a topic in a new and unique way. Use this tool to create graphs and charts for presentations and reports. Make quick charts students can share with others, such as "How I spend my time" and "Places I have visited." ChatGPT is an artificial intelligence chatbot that allows members to have conversations that answer questions and assist with many tasks. Create an account using your email address, Google, or Microsoft account. Use the "Send a Message" box at the bottom of the page to type a chat request and click send. ChatGPT provides a response based on your input. Use the option to regenerate the request if you want to see different answers, or use the chat box to type in clarifying information to improve the response. Always verify any information provided by ChatGPT before using it. This is an evolving tool, and many features change (or upgrade) on a regular basis.

Chatzy offers no-frills, easy-to-use private chat rooms with no sign-up required! Fill out the simple start-up form with your name, chat title, message, and participants' emails. Participants instantly receive an email with your message and a direct link to the room. Room administrator options include enabling or disabling emoticons, images, and videos. The Save/Print options allow administrators to keep a record of any conversations. There is a setting to use Chatzy on mobile devices with smaller screens, as well. Note: Some school networks block all chat tools, so check in advance whether you can access them if you plan to use this tool at school.

Use this site to connect to other classes to open up discussion between your students in one convenient place. Safety is not a concern with this site, since only those with an email invitation/link can participate in a chat. (Your students need not have email. You can simply email the link to yourself and share it with students to enter into their browsers.) Teach good digital citizenship of chat etiquette while using this activity to learn. Connect with other classes to learn about other locations, explore different perspectives, find animals that are similar yet different, learn about the books others are reading, or survey students on various economic, political, or environmental topics. Be sure to plan content in advance, so students have the opportunity to think through the material and formulate a response. Discuss appropriate ways to communicate with others prior to connecting with another classroom. Use Chatzy as a place for students to brainstorm and share ideas about a topic. Use as a simple help forum for students to ask questions of each other and of you. Share a chat room with parents once a month for a scheduled question-and-answer session.Use backchannel chat on laptops during a video or student presentations. Pose questions for all to answer/discuss in the backchannel, or ask students to pose their own "I wonder if..." questions as they watch and listen. Keep every student engaged and THINKING as an active listener. The first time you use backchannel, you will want to establish some etiquette and accountability rules. The advantage of backchannel chat is that every student has a voice, no matter how shy. Use this in world language, ESL/ELL, or autistic support classes for backchannel chat. Challenge students to use their new language skills by acting out a scene from a video or by describing the actors' feelings. Complete each of the tasks to gain points and move to the next area. Designed for beginners and experts students will have to stick with it to be able to move past the beginning as the backstory is lost moving from one action assignment to another. The story can be the one item that makes this site different from other coding challenges. After most of the challenges, the solutions are shown. Download a free song each month including the audio file, sheet music, MP3 recording, and accompanying activities from Children's Music by Nancy. Also available on the site are monthly archives since 2006. Many songs include links to similar songs available on the site. Search by categories such as Science, Language, Holidays or alphabetically. Simple instructions for downloading resources are included on the site along with directions for making your own CD with the songs.
In the Classroom
Use content area songs on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and speakers to introduce new units. For example, when beginning a unit on the Solar System, play "In Our Solar System (Bye Bye Pluto)" to introduce students to the planets' names. Share the site with your school's music teacher as a way to extend activities between subjects. Help students learn Spanish or French by learning songs from the site together. Be sure to share this link with parents. They may want to put some of the songs on the family MP3 player to enjoy on car trips.

One of the faculty Miami University of Ohio has created an on-line database designed to help teachers build thematic units for young children around picture books. The only user interface is a fairly sparse search engine which prompts with selections of keywords for each of the various categories. While awkward at first, this becomes more intuitive as you use it. Search results include bibliographic information and short plot summaries. Once you get the hang of it, this could be a nice way to build thematic units for younger children.

Welcome a new student and open a conversation about empathy, friendship, and communicating across language differences with this author read-aloud of Chocolate Milk, Por Favor! The story follows Gabe, a new student who doesn't speak English, and Johnny, a classmate who initially responds unkindly. Johnny's perspective begins to change after struggling to learn a new soccer skill and recognizing how discouraging it can feel when something is difficult. The story offers young students an approachable way to discuss welcoming newcomers, communicating without a shared language, developing empathy, and building friendships across differences. This video is especially useful because author Maria Dismondy reads her own book and shares information about what inspired the story.

Choice of Games includes tools for creating and playing text-based games (think of it as similar to a choose-your-own-adventure story). Try making games by following the directions to download the script source. Include simple commands using text options for players. This site includes tutorials to get started and add more complex commands. Explore the games archive to play games created by other users and to get inspiration for your creations. Note: You will need to download and install Node.js (free), then download and install the ChoiceScript source from GitHub (free).

In the Classroom
Introduce this site to your students on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector and explore one or two of the games together. Create a short story together to learn about how to use the different story-writing options. As students begin creating games using this site, consider having students create explainer videos to enhance their learning using CapCut, reviewed here, and to demonstrate tools that need a more detailed explanation than what is on the site. Have students create stories to show what they have learned about literature, geography, history, science concepts, and more. As a more "serious" approach, use Choice of Games to present opinion pieces where you take a position and allow readers to click on questions about it. They could also click on statements expressing opposing views, so you can write counterarguments to their points. This idea could prove to be a powerful way to present an argument and evidence as required by Common Core writing standards. Extend student learning by having them include their text-based game as part of a collaborative multi-media presentation created using Sway, reviewed here. In addition to their game, ask students to include their written documents, images, and video creations.Edge Features:

This unit, based on versions of the popular fairy tales "Little Red Riding Hood," "Cinderella," and "Jack and the Beanstalk," helps students develop skills in critical thinking, writing, and public speaking. The central theme focuses on fairy tale heroes who use their intellect to seize opportunities for happiness and survival. Students read, analyze, compare/contrast, and ultimately create their own fairy tales which are presented to the class in the spirit of the oral tradition.
