The International Children's Digital Library, consisting of digital books in many languages, aims to inspire students to become members of the global community through literature. The focus of the digital stories is on identifying materials that help students to understand the world around them. The materials in the collection reflect similarities and differences in cultures and people around the world. Check out the Using the Library section for ideas on how to incorporate the library into your classroom. Note that the books are in text format, not audio. There are three different styles of "readers" to view the books.

In the Classroom
Use an interactive whiteboard or projector to share stories and incite discussion among students. Have small groups construct mini-lessons on the theme or a reading strategy using one of the digital books, and then teach the class using an interactive whiteboard. In the Classroom
Although the official International Dot Day is in September, use ideas from the site to inspire creativity and collaboration throughout the year. Read The Dot to students and encourage them to brainstorm and collaborate ways they can make their mark in the world. Celebrate by joining the International Dot Day Virtual Event on Monday, Sept. 15 with a live stream featuring the author and his twin brother. Challenge older students to explore their place in the world through the use of a blog. If you are beginning the process of integrating technology, have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Penzu, reviewed here, with Penzu you can add images or your own artwork as illustrations. Or, use Webnode, reviewed here. Take this a step further by joining the Connect with Other Classrooms and sharing your Dot Day activities with your global friends. Discover the power of storytelling through the work of the International Storytelling Center. The center's work includes three main categories: performance, preservation, and practice. Although many events are part of paid admission to the Storytelling Festival, the site contains many free resources. Start with the "Storytellers" link to learn about featured storytellers that include links to their websites. Select the area entitled "Initiatives" to find Freedom Stories and the Learning Library. Freedom Stories is an ongoing series that features performances and discussions focused on the topic of the Black Heritage of Appalachia. The Learning Library is an area for educators that includes lessons, storytelling toolkits, stories in action, and other classroom resources. The videos are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom
Take advantage of this site's many storytelling resources to teach and share the art of storytelling with your students. Watch videos together and discuss how storytellers use different techniques to engage an audience. Use EdPuzzle, reviewed here, to create interactive video lessons by adding questions and notes to featured videos to guide students as they watch storytellers in action. As you encourage students to learn about storytelling, use activities found at ReadWriteThink, reviewed here, to help students plan and create stories. For example, use this lesson to create book trailers instead of book reports to guide students through a digital storytelling activity. As students gain confidence in storytelling, ask them to create a podcast series featuring their work. Buzzsprout, reviewed here, is a simple to use podcasting tool that offers up to two hours of free uploads per month.

Internet Archive is a massive digital library offering free access to millions of books, movies, music, websites, and more. Use this resource to find historical documents, classic literature, educational videos, and archived websites to support lessons in almost any subject. The "Wayback Machine" is especially useful for exploring the history of websites, while the extensive eBook and audio collections can enhance reading assignments. Internet Archive is a great tool for expanding classroom materials and encouraging independent research or exploration.

The videos/audios can be accessed directly on the site or downloaded to your device for listening on the go. You can also listen to the interview as a podcast. Bring your classroom of readers to life as writers or fill in some background knowledge as you approach a new book or selection in your reading series. Grab a projector and bring the author right into your classroom, or turn down the lights and listen to what she has to say before you start reading. You can also create a shortcut to this page right on the computer desktop and allow students to "visit with" them as a center in your classroom. One great student writing prompt: Which author is most like you? Maybe even ask students to write about their own writing process on your class blog after sharing some of the interviews. A good resource for a class blog is edublogs, reviewed here. Libarians may want to set up a kiosk with this web site opened for children when they come in. Introducing Text Structures in Writing is a comprehensive lesson plan to introduce the idea that science writing organizes in identifiable patterns called text structures. Common Core Reading/LA Standards focus on these text structures in informational texts. Use the provided links to many materials such as word cards, sentence strips, definitions, and graphic organizers to print materials in PDF format. Lists include suggested books for different text structures such as sequence, description, and compare and contrast. Use extension and assessment ideas as additions to the lesson plan. Although labeled for 5th grade, this lesson would be appropriate for use in any classroom learning to read and understand non-fiction and informational text.

That possibility is now available with InVideo AI, an AI-powered video creation tool that turns ideas into videos in just a few minutes. After creating a free account, enter a detailed prompt describing the video you want to create. InVideo AI generates a script, selects media, adds voice narration, and assembles a video based on your instructions. Once the video is created, you can edit scenes, modify the script, change media, adjust voiceovers, or regenerate portions of the project as needed. When finished, export the video to your device or share it via the available publishing options. InVideo AI can be used to create educational videos, presentations, explainers, social media content, and more. A free plan is available, though it includes limited AI generation time, exports with an InVideo watermark, and restricted access to premium media and features. As with any artificial intelligence (AI) tool, educators should review all generated content for accuracy and appropriateness before sharing it with students.

Create a free personal account, then follow the directions to download iorad's browser extension or desktop application to your computer. Create a tutorial by selecting the "new capture" link and following the directions to begin recording from your chosen tab. Demonstrate the procedure and stop recording when finished. iorad automatically creates the tutorial and offers options to edit the contents before completing the publishing process. Share completed tutorials using the links or embed code provided.

The number of classroom uses for this tool is countless! Use iorad to create guides for students to log in to software, games, and computer programs. Create step-by-step guides for students on adding or editing images in tools such as Google Slides, reviewed here or Genially, reviewed here. Ask students to include iorad tutorials within multimedia presentations to demonstrate information, such as how to search Google for Creative Commons Images or narrow searches to fit into a custom time frame. This tool is a terrific online photo editing and paint app. No account or registration is necessary. Upload a picture or find the URL of a photo from online or Facebook. Re-size, flip, rotate, crop, or alter the exposure, saturation, and contrast. Use additional features such as fix image, smart blur, and reflections. Use even more effects such as a cartoonizer, artistic painting, or wanted photo. You will love the retouch section which features the standard red-eye and blemish fix, along with teeth whitening. Add captions or text to the pictures with a wide selection of fonts. You can also create collages, but you must enable local storage of images on your computer. The Painter section includes standard pen, brush, erase with a sponge, and burn effects to allow for drawings on the pictures. Once completed, download the finished picture to a computer, post on Facebook, share by URL, or upload to Flickr. Here is a sample of adding text to an online image without even creating an account.

Find out instantly if the problem you are having opening a web site is YOUR problem or a website that is down. Is It Down Right Now (iidrn.com for short) instantly "pings" a site so you can tell whether the site is down for everyone or just for you (perhaps due to a glitch with your Internet provider). The Internet is never a sure thing, but this tool tells you whether it's just YOU having trouble. Although it sounds geeky, it's easy. Copy/paste or type the URL you are trying to reach into the box at top right, and click "Check." The results tell you how long it takes for the site to respond and how long it has been down (if it is). What a handy tool for ANYONE using the web! What this tool will not tell you is if you are mistyping the URL, so always double check.

In the Classroom
Mark this one in your Favorites and remind your student to use it before they call out, "The page isn't opening!" in the middle of class. Make it one of the required tools as part of "ask three before me." If you have a class web page, this is a handy way to find out if your web page service (or district-provided web page server) is having trouble "serving up" the class page. Tell savvy students who are unable to access web sites to use this tool and take a screen shot of the results if a site assigned for homework is "down" for prolonged periods. The National Park Service presents this massive unit for Island of the Blue Dolphins. See the village, visit the island, and learn about the sea life around the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students will love this artistic interactive site full of pictures they can click on to visit links that ask questions and give more information. Across the top menu are many resources for teachers and students. There is an "About the Author" with a short biography about Scott O'Dell. Choose to follow the story by chapter or theme. Click the picture for each chapter and scroll to the bottom to find a writing prompt and lesson plan. There are many clickable resources in-between.

In the Classroom
If you use literature circles (small reading groups) in your classroom, using a unit like this and allowing the groups to go through the unit at their own pace, or suggesting a jigsaw approach to reviewing a set of chapters is a good way to make this unit "student centered." Learn about the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach at Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here. Enhance student learning by asking them to make an Infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, about what they learned from the novel; an inforgraphic would be a great conclusion for the lit circle project. Post the infographics on your web page for all your students and their parents to enjoy.

Make it easy for peers to find all of your screen recordings by uploading them to Padlet, reviewed here. Of course, by sharing them to Padlet you also introduce a new tech tool for them to try! Instead of a one-time professional development session, consider creating an ongoing podcast using Buzzsprout, reviewed here to share new technology tools, provide advice and tips, and answer common questions. The ISTE YouTube channel provides a great starting point for learning and sharing tech tips with peers.
