Kodu is a software download for creating Windows PC games through a simple programming language. Download Kodu for free from the Microsoft Fuse Lab (there are "Get Kodu" buttons on the home page and the tips page). The software allows you to create and personalize virtual worlds through point and click options. Additional options offer "if this, then that" personalization to add variety to the game. Under Resources find the "Other Resources" and click Video to see "Getting Started" tutorial and "Biginner Videos" that reside on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable. A download is also available for Xbox games; however, it is not free.

Have students work in teams to design and develop content demonstrating an understanding of lessons in any subject area. Begin sharing Kodu with your computer experts who are interested in programming. Allow them to be the leaders in sharing how to use and personalize the program. Host virtual meetings with up to thirty participants with Kumospace. The free plan includes all of the site's core features, including unlimited floors and virtual apps. Other features include the ability to screen share, chat with individuals or the entire group, and customize your workspace. After creating an account, start your meeting by selecting the "Create a Space" button. Next, give your space a name, customize the end of the URL to be shared, and choose an option for your area. Then, share the link to invite others to your virtual meeting. Finally, choose from templates to change the background of your space, add floors, and edit privacy settings for your session and each floor. Privacy options include requiring a password for different floors or setting the floor availability only for use by co-hosts. Introduce your students to Kwanzaa by taking the quiz to see how much they know about Kwanzaa. Then in pairs or small groups, have students research the terms. As students research, substitute paper and pen journals by asking younger students to create a blog using a tool like Penzu, reviewed here to share what they are learning with fellow students. A great blogging tool for older students is Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph have students click on an icon to upload related images, add YouTube or Vimeo links. Add this site to your activities to use during December and to help students from all backgrounds understand the different holidays celebrated in December. Introduce this site using the colorful video, then have small groups research a different principle and symbol of Kwanzaa and present their findings to the class. Use an engaging bookmarking tool such as Wakelet, reviewed here. With Wakelet students can make their wakes distinctive by adding a cover image or symbol for their Kwanzaa topic, a background, and choose the layout. Have students create images in Labeley to add to book reports and multimedia projects. Have students upload a picture of themselves doing their favorite activity and label it with amusing text or a favorite quote (or song lyrics?). Have them upload images that represent their interests and character traits using 4 Free Photos, reviewed here, from the public domain. Of course, proper credit must be given. Create a picture for a character from a story and add text descriptions of character traits. For other uses, have students practice new words in a world language class by labeling and identifying images in that language. Create writing prompts using several annotated images. Use these documents for professional use to help understand the components of literacy. In addition, these items also provide excellent information to use with parents when discussing their student's literacy journey. For example, use the first document with the literacy ladder to provide perspective during parent/teacher conferences on students' progress toward becoming effortless readers. Finally, share with peers during professional development activities to develop an awareness of structured reading components and assess your current teaching strategies. Use a collaborative tool like Notejoy, reviewed here, to share ideas and plan lessons. Consider sharing literacy terms and strategies with parents on an ongoing basis through your school website or classroom newsletter. Include ideas for parents to incorporate at home to support reading skills.

This would be great for ESL/ELL learners; have them type a short sentence and listen to the playback to verify that the sentence is correct. It would also be a great practice for beginning readers. Use your interactive whiteboard and have the class tell a very brief story or say a sentence. After typing the sentence into the program, user a pointer for each word as the synthesizer reads it, or have students take turns pointing out the words. Share tonight's homework on your class web page as a link to an audio reminder simply by typing or pasting in the assignment and copying the link to place it on your web page.Comments

Display an artwork from the curriculum and ask students to describe it using as many adjectives as possible. Introduce vocabulary related to color, texture, and emotions, and encourage students to use complete sentences when sharing their descriptions. Have students choose a painting or sculpture and imagine the story behind it. Students can write a short narrative or dialogue between characters in the artwork, practicing past tense and narrative structures. Students can revise unclear or wordy sentences by rewriting them with shorter, more precise language and comparing their revisions with classmates to see which version is easiest to understand. They can also improve a paragraph by highlighting confusing or repetitive parts, rewriting it with better organization and word choice, and then editing a partner's work using a checklist that looks for long sentences, unnecessary words, and unclear ideas. To extend the lesson, students can rotate through revision stations to practice shortening sentences, replacing weak words, and adjusting their writing for different audiences so the message is clear to every reader. Let your students play and replay the modules (with headphones!) until they believe they understand, then try thr online or prinatble exercises for practice and comprehension check. You could also do the activities together with a class on a projector or interactive whiteboard.
