Explore together and have students explore on their own or in groups. Provide the link on your website for students to continue to explore at home. Have students create online posters individually or in small groups to advertise their favorite part of "The Pit and The Pendulum." Homeroom is an online tool and mobile app to share your class photos privately with parents, students, and others. Create an album and invite people to view it. Each time you update it, the members will be notified. When you populate your album with photos, you can also add a comment. Access Homeroom and upload photos on any device. For Initial registration you can use the app (iOs or Android) or register using your Google or Facebook account, or manually using email. Once registered, you can access the tool using any device using your username and password. Invite others from any device or computer by phone number or email address. They will become members and will be able to update your photo albums. You will be alerted about the new content. Albums are private. Only the people with the invite have access to the photos.

Invite parents and students as you create albums of specific events such as field trips, service projects, hands-on activities, field experiences, class speakers, and more. Anywhere photos can be used to showcase achievement, this service would be a great resource. Use for any project, class explanation of concepts, experiments, or demonstrations. Resource teachers, speech teachers, or world language teachers can collect images into "albums" for students to practice/develop speech and vocabulary. In science class when having students do insect collections, instead of having them collect the actual specimens, have them take pictures using their phones or digital cameras. Have the students upload to the album at home, and then they can create a multimedia project with the pictures and statistics of the specimen. Students can snap a picture anywhere, with any device, and upload to the web to use in class or cooperative groups. This tool would be great for clubs and performance groups as well! Do you send a newsletter home to parents? Try creating a heading made from a collage of your latest class activity. Use a program such as Mosaic Maker, reviewed here, to create a collage. Though the content is private, monitor student photos and comments as nothing would be prohibited by Homeroom. Why reinvent the wheel? Bookmark this site for use all year. Use these worksheets to help differentiate for students. Many of the topics are covered at different levels and with different activities. Use some of the worksheets as review of a topic you already taught or to prepare for a test. Set up stations with worksheets from different topics for different days of the week, i.e. Monday is always spelling day and Friday is always poetry day. Choose individualized options so students are working at the appropriate level. These worksheets would be great practice for ESL/ELL and learning support students. Hate worksheets? Have students access this site and create their own learning activities to challenge each other based on the content here, but adding their own creative touches. They could use a quiz creator or multimedia tool from the Edge. Create "free and easy" interactive polls/quizzes using Kahoot (reviewed here).

In the Classroom
You might want to share this site on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) before student use to demonstrate how to use the search and how to work around the many advertisements on the site. Play musical selections for students to "name the instrument" or talk about musical elements and styles in music class. Have partners explore the site to find examples of different rhythms or styles they prefer. Use Royalty Free Music for soft background music during quiet work times in your classroom. Share with students for use in multimedia presentations. Try sharing this resource with students when they are creating podcasts, slideshows, and other media projects. This would also be great for performance groups such as drama clubs or musicals that need background music. Use background music for poetry readings during poetry month. Have them try making a "sound rebus" story on your class wiki, with words and sound links to tell what happens. Download sound effects and add them, worry-free, to projects or productions. Behold is a search tool for high quality images on Flickr. It goes beyond typical search tools by looking beyond tags and filenames to find what is inside at the pixel level. In addition to a keyword search, other filters allow you to find images licensed for free use, modification, or for commercial use. For a full overview of how to use Behold, click on the "About" link for video examples on using filters. Be sure to preview any searches/results that you plan to share with students. Flickr can have images of just about anything. You should also double check the Flickr image page for the image you choose to double verify that the license is what you sought (CC, for example). If the image owner changes the license after the image is indexed by Behold, the image may show in the wrong results.

Use this tool to find high quality images for classroom projects. When using images on a web page or wiki, use ImageCodr reviewed here to correctly use and give proper credit. BOTH the image AND the licensing will be displayed. Post images as writing prompts, you-name-it science questions, or world language conversation starters, all from a simple Flickr image search! Use images as examples of design principles or art elements. Be sure students understand the different types of images available and use ones that are licensed correctly in their own media projects. Model use of this tool for using images from Flickr. To give image credit in a slide show or other media project, click to see the full image on Flickr, double check the license information, and copy the url for the Flickr page. Paste it into a credits are below the image on your slide. Take "sticky notes" quickly and easily -- wherever you have a web browser available. Just name your workspace and load the page. There is no sign-in or registration. Click on the yellow square (upper left corner) to create a sticky note. Double click on the note to write text. Change the color to visually organize notes. Click on the disk icon to save. Wait... there is more... you can store pictures, give presentations, use it for real-time collaboration, or simply make a to-do list. Just save the URL to share with friends and co-workers or to go back and revise. Check out the "Hint" page to learn how you can add HTML code to link to another website, how to move all notes of one color at the same time, and much more. This site looks simple, but it is quite powerful.

Use a Webnote to collaborate when collecting ideas, brainstorming, and more. There are many classroom uses for electronic note taking. Science and math students can jot down the steps or reminders of what they did in a lab or math problem. History students can take notes on the text they are reading. Students in all subjects can take notes for a test or create questions for a test on Webnote. Language Arts students can keep track of characters in a novel and write responses as they read. Writing students can use this tool as a place to jot down ideas or first drafts. Make sure your students COPY and save the url to their own webnotes. They can "tun them in" to you by url or share them with classmates. Get detailed reports to track and analyze progress using percentages, bar graphs, and tables. Sign up with an email and be sure to know your reading level. Then it is simple: Read the passage, take a quiz, and see answers and explanations after finishing the quiz. If you are unsure of the appropriate reading level, visit a reading assessment site. Take your students to the next level in their reading and reading skills! Sign up students yourself (assigning a password and username). Students can sign up for themselves if they have an email (and school policies permit). The first task is to provide the reading level. Use this site to differentiate reading levels for your students. Use this tool in a blended learning or remote learning classroom so students can have time to read at their own pace, or set up a learning center for use during your L.A. block. This will allow you one-on-one time to begin the program. In a learning support or remedial reading class, especially at upper levels where "reading" is no longer a regular subject, this tool will allow students some autonomy in improving their skills. It will also let them see progress. Discuss with individual students the questions they answered, where the answer was in the reading, etc. Be certain to save this site in your class favorites and list it on your class website for students to access both in and out of the classroom. If students cannot have their own email accounts, consider using a "class set" of Gmail subaccounts, explained here; this tells how to set up Gmail subaccounts to use for any online membership service. For a detailed explanation, visit the New to the Project link. The project includes a hypothesis, prediction, data collection, and comparing results. The data collection period lasts one week. Raindrop.io is a smart bookmarking tool to "collect" online and media content. It is available as a mobile app, as a web tool, and as a browser extension for Safari, Chrome, Opera, or Firefox. After adding the extension to your browser, a couple of clicks saves and organizes content into thematic collections. Collections can include videos, files, images, and other media. Watch the tour videos to see how it works. Add tags and notes, and drag and drop bookmarks between collections as you wish. Browse your collections using the search bar and keywords. Use Raindrop's social networking feature to create and share collections or find and subscribe to others' collections. Receive a weekly email digest of your bookmarks, or turn that feature off.

Use this tool to compile web treasure hunts to learn or introduce any topic within your content area. Collect links to informational texts for students to read "closely" a la CCSS. With younger students, create collections of audio books for children to view and listen to. Share simple interactives teaching colors, numbers and more for a computer center. Have students create their own Raindrop as a place to store links for a project and ask them to attach it to attach it to their final project. Share a link to your Raindrop on your class webpage. Save pictures of class activities with a Raindrop collection to share with parents. Encourage your gifted students to curate collections of media and articles above the level of current curriculum or for individual research on related topics they are interested in. Engage your students and knockdown participation barriers with GoSoapBox, a free web-based student response system. Set up an event, or GoSoapBox space, for your class. Students enter the SoapBox through a unique code, and only the instructor can view the student names. Accessible through a computer or mobile device, GoSoapBox offers many tools for some creative Q&A in your classroom. The confusion barometer allows the teacher to assess the students' understanding of the topic. The poll and quiz tools provide a formative assessment option. Post questions or topics for your students using the GoSoapBox discussion tool. An option to post anonymously is available as well as many other settings for using the Social Q&A tool. Students can post questions for their peers or the teacher to answer. Coupled with an Internet connected device, GoSoapBox provides an outside the box classroom experience. GoSoapBox is free for class sizes under 30 students.

Ask and answer any question with the Q&A Wiki. This site is a classic example of using the "wisdom (or not-so-wisdom) of the crowd." Using the Wiki format, user-contributors amend answers with an improved response if desired. Type a question in the search bar or search and browse through different sections such as food, health, or politics. Find basic "how to" information and directions for questions asked by others. Registration isn't required to search and browse the site. However, registration using email or social networking links allows users to post and answer questions. At the time of this review, there were no offensive topics. However, not all topics are "classroom-appropriate."

Share the Q&A Wiki with students on your interactive whiteboard (or projector) and explore answers to classroom questions. Post a question, and challenge students to share their response. Use choices of questions from this site as writing prompts for informational writing. Have students find good (and not-so-good) examples of how-to responses as they learn to write their own step by step directions. Challenge students to explore the site to find incorrect or incomplete answers to questions and use this as part of a lesson on evaluating Internet sources. How can you decide whether the information is accurate?
