This site is designed to be a resource for teachers and students on the atom bomb. There is an interactive time line, excellent graphics on the physics of the atom bomb, biographies of major characters in the story and good teacher resources including lesson plans. This site might be useful to both science and social studies teachers. The graphics on the physics of the atom bomb are great, but the historical context setting and discussion is also excellent. There are links to WebQuests, and information about California state standards met by the lesson plans.

tag(s): atomic bomb (7), cold war (39)

In the Classroom

Consider using this exploration about the development of the bomb as a focus while studying atomic particles or twentieth century history. The webquests are ready-to-go units or you can "cherry pick" sites to feature as a single class activity on laptops or in a lab.

This PBS site has Quick Time 360 degree views of the inside of a submarine, recordings of underwater sounds, a quiz about sound, and first person accounts of life aboard a military submarine. The quiz, focused on the science of sound, would be interesting in a science class, but the centerpiece of the site is the Quick Time tour of a military submarine. You can choose either the USS Nautilus, the first nuclear powered sub, or the USS Springfield, a more modern version.

tag(s): engineering (141)

In the Classroom

Although military ships are not a typical curriculum topic, teachers studying technology and engineering topics will want to consider this site as a "real world connection" to illustrate some of the applications of technology and physics, especially for your more concrete learners.

Animal Diversity Web is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, and classification organized as an online encyclopedia. Users can search the Animalia Kingdom by Phylum, Subphylum, Class, Order, and Family. Choose the corresponding icons to view facts, descriptions, pictures, specimens, and hear the sounds of the various animals. This site contains a lot of information. Younger students may need some assistance/instruction maneuvering through the site initially.

tag(s): animals (274), biodiversity (39), diversity (55)

In the Classroom

Introduce the site on a projector or interactive whiteboard before asking students to investigate their own animal choices. Older students can make comparisons and contrasts to understand the taxonomy better, and can also read about the naming of species. See the teaching link for more ideas. Play the sounds on your computer speakers, especially if the animals are unfamiliar in your part of the world. This site also includes a very public message about its authorship (college students), which can prompt a productive discussion about the reliability and appropriateness of its sources. Reinforce critical evaluation of sources and information literacy in your science class, too!

Animal Corner offers facts and statistics for a multitude of animals. It is easy to maneuver through the categories of animals such as pets, farm, insects, wild life, marine, Galapagos, and rain forest. The site is user-friendly and filled with interesting information.

Be aware: the site says that it is "currently under construction" but all information and links work, they are simply adding additional material. There are some unobtrusive advertisements at this website.

tag(s): animals (274), insects (63), reptiles (12)

Perfect for a web quest or research tool for a project/report. Place on your classroom homepage or desktop to correlate with your weekly/daily theme. Lower elementary readers will need help with some of the text, but there are also pictures.

This highly interactive website (created by the National Museum of Natural History) teaches students about the Earth. Topics include, "If Rocks Could Talk," "Plates on the Move," "Making Rocks," "Mysterious Planets," and more! There is also a link, "Stuff To Do" which provides activities to do away from the computer. Some of the interactive links require Flash, but there is a whole lot more to do and learn that doesn't.

Introduce the site and the "Big Idea" on a projector or interactive whiteboard, then assign students to choose one of the activities to complete. Share results with the class on an interactive whiteboard or projector as groups complete the activity. Include this link on your teacher web page for enrichment and at-home exploration. Students could also be assigned the "non-computer" activities for homework.

This online textbook contains an amazing amount of information regarding biology and botany. The in-depth detail is a bit overwhelming, but the "diamonds in rough" and bits of interesting information are worth it, as is the factual data contained within the website. The site also includes online curricula for biology and botany 101.

This site would be very handy for a research project or upper-level web quest. Include it on your teacher's web page as you assign independent projects for both in and out of class. The pages are text-intensive, so weak readers will need an alternate source or a reader partner.

When users are looking for the name of tree by looking at its leaf, this website will identify the leaf and then lead to so much more information! People who want to learn how to take care of trees learn about soils, types of land, and even how to plant (video included)!

This webquest carefully examines the problem of possible wolf extinction, their re-introduction into the wild, the opposition of the ranchers in the area etc. By presenting small groups of students with a real issue, the quest will teach how to perform and evaluate research before developing a point of view on an issue. For the final project of the quest, users write an editorial stating their well-researched viewpoint. Students don't do original research but rather use the articles contained within the project. Contains a rubric for evaluation as well as a form for "pre-writing" so the process of research and final presentation is carefully controlled. Users need RealAudio to hear the howls of the wolves.

Update this project a little and have students deliver their reports via an interactive infographic using Canva, reviewed here, or a podcast which will give them practice on oral reporting and editing. Use a site such as podOmatic, reviewed here. Student groups can present their reports to the class or post the to the class wiki or webpage. Not comfortable with wikis?
