Learn about the life and careers of many famous scientists by viewing intriguing videos. Find out about scientists such as Richard Feynman, Rosalind Franklin, and Gregor Mendel through interviews with scientists in their field today. Don't let the cartoon figures fool you: these videos are not "juvenile." The scientists included may not be household names to everyone, but the videos make their work accessible and interesting. At the time of this review, there were over a dozen scientists included, and more were being added regularly. Note that the actual videos are hosted on YouTube so may not be accessible in some schools.

Use as a resource for finding more information about a variety of different scientists told from a scientist's perspective. Share the videos on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Consider having students create their own report about the importance of research and not just the biographical information about a scientist. Information is organized by grade level, or subject area. Web 2.0 tutorials include links for information on: apps for iPod, iTouch, blogs, audio/pod casting, collaboration, graphic organizers, file converters, html editors, open source, organization tools, PLN tools, presentation tools, social bookmarking, survey makers, web browsers, video/photo, Wiki, and Word Cloud Generators. Links for Assessment Assistance give extra ways to assess in a fun technological twist. A daily dose section offers quotes, brain teasers, question of the day, and intersecting trivia. Join an RSS feed to get the latest updated information. Up to date, active links are reviewed continually. This site offers information about energy, including games and videos, for students and provides curriculum materials for teachers. Students can read and learn about the history of electricity, power safety tips, and learn about "green" power. Games include Power Bandit, a word search, crossword, and jigsaw puzzles. Beware of the Energy Vampire explains to students how to save energy, and which appliances use a lot of energy. There is a large inventory of videos showing different types of energy production plants, explaining power production through the use of coal and nuclear reactors, and the history of the TVA. Teachers, be sure to check out the teacher's section of the site which includes lesson plans and activities for elementary through high school. Engaging and colorful.

Share this site with students on your interactive whiteboard or projector and allow students to explore on their own. Create a scavenger hunt with questions from the students and have students explore the site to find answers. Watch videos on your interactive whiteboard during lessons on energy production, conservation, or history lesson. After learning about a specific topic, challenge cooperative learning groups to enhance their learning by completing a presentation with "talking pictures" using Blabberize.

Find Streaming Videos from John Stossel to engage your students in discussions about interesting and thought-provoking issues. Each month this site posts a new video for your use, and all videos come with suggested discussion questions and quizzes. Also, you will find lots of discussion topics in the archived section titled with categories like the environment, celebrities, and consumer issues, just to name a few. Registration is free; you need to log in to view the teacher's guide and discussion questions! There are some items of interest on the top menu bar: Both Sides of the Issue, Features, Video Library, and Teacher Resources.

In the Classroom
Use these streaming videos to help create "background knowledge" for your students and improve listening and note taking skills. Small groups of students could rotate through stations with the video, or you can use it with the whole class. Either way, students can practice their two column (Cornell) note taking skills using the left column for keywords and/or questions and the right side of the paper for important information about the topic they are viewing. Have students discuss and look up answers to their questions. If using the videos as a whole class, you may want to use a discussion program that allows "backchanneling" such as Socrative, so everyone can comment on the issue(s) presented and see each other thoughts. Another idea is to use the videos as a jump-off point for research by small groups. There are many huge topics you can break into parts for small groups to investigate after watching Stossel's take on it. Then challenge the groups to create a multimedia presentation using one of many TeachersFirst Edge tools.

Find great resources that focus on the use of science and math knowledge to bring these topics to life. View a variety of topics such as Using Geometry to Design Simple Machines, Galaxies and Dark Matter, and Classifying Animals by Appearance Versus DNA Sequence. On each video page, click the link to view the video, read a summary of the information, and even download the transcript, teachers guide, and images that are used for the video. Use as some great starters to a unit where students can question what needs to be understood to solve the problem. Brainstorm questions, research information, or use these as starters for daily lessons. Provide time for students to view videos and report their understandings via a blog or report. Create student reviews of videos to be placed on a blog and allow for commenting on the videos and the reviews themselves.

This site discusses the aftermath of the South Asia earthquake in 2011. There is an extremely thorough and detailed section that details what an earthquake is and how/why they occur. If you do not have the time to check out this entire site, at least visit the earthquake information! This site also provides pictures, web chats, quizzes, and a wealth of information. The quiz requires Flash; however, nothing else does and there is plenty to learn and discuss at this site.

If you are teaching a unit on weather and earthquakes, be sure to use an interactive whiteboard or projector and utilize the awesome interactive FLASH presentation! After students have read about this earthquake, have them research the largest earthquakes in Japan and Chile and make comparisons to this one. Using map resources on this site, have students establish where this occurred in comparison to where Japan and Chile are located. Looking for a great resource site that offers visualizations of complex cellular activities? Use DNA Tube as your visual scientific resource. This non-profit scientific site provides video-based studies, lectures, and seminars that are for more advanced and motivated students. Use the video-based explanations of a large variety of biological concepts to remove barriers to understanding for students. Click "watch" to see thumbnails of videos. Use the search bar at the top to find relevant videos. Use the Category tab to search across categories such as lectures, experiments, ecology, genetics, and more. Sign up for the site to download videos after entering your login information. Along the bottom of each video page, find thumbnails of related videos as well as related topics. Topics include various areas of science and math. This site does allow you to upload your own videos. Uploading videos requires registration.

Find great videos to use as an introduction to a unit or to clarify how a process works. Use videos on an interactive whiteboard or with a projector. Pause the video to ask questions about what is happening in the process, explain the process, or allow students to use appropriate vocabulary to explain. This site is excellent for enrichment. Include it on your class web page so students can access it both in and out of class. Challenge students to create their own simple videos to help explain a science concept. This lesson explores a large amount of debris that washes up on the most remote islands in the world and the effect of this garbage on ocean animals. The lesson features the video, "Trash on the Spin Cycle" and includes pre-viewing activities, focus questions, and post-viewing questions. Be sure to also check out the many additional resources included on the site. Viewing the video requires flash which is not available on all browsers; however, the lesson plan can be modified by using other available videos.

The interactive is a challenge to use a lever to raise one end of an obelisk three feet off the ground. There is a teacher's guide that provides a detailed lesson plan. Check it out!
