The range of topics goes from astronomy, to history, to French and much, much more! There is something good here for every classroom. You MUST have PowerPoint software (not free) to be able to download and edit the shows.

In the Classroom

Use the small blue buttons to find your subject(s). This site is great for finding/sharing an interactive whiteboard activity or projected lesson. Since the PowerPoint shoes are editable, you may want to customize the shows you find. The grade equivalents are listed in the British system: KS1=ages 5-7; KS2=ages 7-11;KS3= ages 11-14;KS4= ages 14-16, A Level=ages 16-18.

The Air Quality Flag Program provides instructions for organizations to display colored flags daily that indicate the current air quality. Begin with "Start Your Flag Program" to find the four steps to get started. Although there is a link to purchase flags, participating programs can create their own flags using cloth or vinyl, or even a digital display on classroom whiteboards. Use the available link to create a custom widget for your class site. This site also includes lesson plans, activity books, and school resources.

tag(s): air (27), environment (253), pollution (55)

In the Classroom

Work together to create monthly air quality graphs using Data GIF Maker, reviewed here, then ask students to analyze the data. Consider asking students to create weekly podcasts that review the week's weather and air quality and include their predictions for the upcoming week. Adobe Podcast, reviewed here includes free tools for creating and sharing podcasts. As an alternative to a podcast for younger students, use Animate from Audio, reviewed here to create short animated films with students' voice recordings.

This website provides a lesson plan that was designed to use around Halloween. There are objectives, assessments, and standards provided. This lesson is all about throwing a "literary bash" in honor of your class's favorite piece of literature (Harry Potter is used an example). This activity is an excellent alternative to a traditional Halloween party.

tag(s): halloween (46)

In the Classroom

Use this lesson plan, and tailor it to fit your unit in almost any content area - math, english, history, science, etc. Though this lesson was intended just for Language Arts classes, most content areas also have books or common themes that this could apply to. Use this lesson plan after a test or towards the end of the year when students might need a break from the traditional classroom routines. This is a great way to make sure students get some substance of a "break" while keeping it academic! Be sure to save this as a favorite on your classroom computer to allow for easy reference later on.

Animal Diversity Web is an online database of animal natural history, distribution, and classification organized as an online encyclopedia. Users can search the Animalia Kingdom by Phylum, Subphylum, Class, Order, and Family. Choose the corresponding icons to view facts, descriptions, pictures, specimens, and hear the sounds of the various animals. This site contains a lot of information. Younger students may need some assistance/instruction maneuvering through the site initially.

tag(s): animals (274), biodiversity (39), diversity (55)

In the Classroom

Introduce the site on a projector or interactive whiteboard before asking students to investigate their own animal choices. Older students can make comparisons and contrasts to understand the taxonomy better, and can also read about the naming of species. See the teaching link for more ideas. Play the sounds on your computer speakers, especially if the animals are unfamiliar in your part of the world. This site also includes a very public message about its authorship (college students), which can prompt a productive discussion about the reliability and appropriateness of its sources. Reinforce critical evaluation of sources and information literacy in your science class, too!
