This site from the Museum of Natural History is a rich resource for images of dinosaurs. You can select by body type, country, geologic time period, and other idicies. Apart from the images, which are watermarked, there is only basic information on the size and environment of each creature on the landing page, however, scroll WAY down to the bottom of the page for a site menu. Look for Discover, and under that Dinosaurs. On this page you will find a WEALTH of information from an Introduction to Dinosaurs to Dinosaur behavior, abilities, lifestyles, to Dinosaur Digs, and even Dinosaur Crafts and Activities. While not intended for elementary students, the navigation is simple enough for these students to use effectively in finding images.

tag(s): dinosaurs (48), reptiles (12)

In the Classroom

In a unit on dinosaurs, share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector with students. The function they will find most interesting about this site is the area that describes the dinosaurs that existed in their local area! Brief bios are presented on all the dinosaurs, so this could also be a great resource if the students were to research their local dinosaurs for a project.

The National Geographic presents an introduction to Great White sharks suitable for use by lower elementary students. The site helps dispel many of the myths about sharks and their behavior. The science, artwork, and design are all typical of the quality of National Geographic materials.

In the Classroom

Make a shortcut to this site on your desktop and use it as a center. Allow students to review the site, making sure to include headphones for the audio portions. There are a lot of random, but interesting, facts about sharks on this site that will maintain students interest. Have students decide what facts were the most interesting, and use their comments to spur a class discussion comparing sharks to other mammals the class has studied. A useful way to do this would be to use a venn diagram tool on the interactive whiteboard or projector, allowing all students to participate at once. We recommend a tool like the 2 and 3 Circle Interactive Venn Diagrams, reviewed here.

There is a lot to explore here. You could start with the home page and the many articles listed there. Have small groups divide up the articles to read and investigate. Then have students with the same article meet together to become the expert on that topic (in cooperative learning, this is known as Jigsaw). Have each student in the Jigsaw group create an Awesome ScreenShot, where they can make digital notes with lines, text, or shapes. Once they form back into their original small group, they can report what they learned to the other group members.

This is an updated version of a site on the stars and galaxies that's been around for a while. The presentation is keyed to applicable national and state standards (primarily Virginia and Maryland). The presentations include an unusually complete set of lessons in astronomy and mathematics. For younger students, find animated videos and downloadable coloring books. The videos reside on YouTube. If your district blocks Youtube, they may not be viewable.

This is a nicely indexed, searchable collection of NASA photos whose topics range from aeronautics to space, the planets, and beyond. Most are copyright-free, since they were created for government use. While some image sizes are quite large, this could be a wonderful resource for creating web projects, student use, or other space and astronomy applications.

tag(s): aircraft (25), images (267), nasa (36), planets (123), solar system (124), space (248)

In the Classroom

Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of Solar Flares, or another outer space related topic. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. This is a great way to introduce content in a way that engages and gets students thinking, as well as avoiding the typical lecture format.

There are several Modules here to choose from. Select a few for small groups in your class to explore. As students explore, have them take notes with an online tool like Simplenote, reviewed here, have them share the info they learned with their small group. Tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Make sure students compare notes and fill in their own with important information they may have missed. Simple note allows you to access and update across all devices. Take this a step further and challenge students to share their learning with the rest of their classmates and create a multimedia presentation using Sway, reviewed here. Sway offers tools to easily create professsional looking presentations, brochures, interactive posters, and newsletters. These can include images, videos, and more.

Take advantage of these free lesson plans for any unit on astronomy. Search the site to find the appropriate lesson tools, and bring them up on an interactive whiteboard or projector. A lot of the activities can be used for a class activity, or you could also break students up into cooperative learning groups and have them complete them separately.
