Make a shortcut to this site on your desktop and use it as a center. Allow students to review the site, making sure to include headphones for the audio portions. There are a lot of random, but interesting, facts about sharks on this site that will maintain students interest. Have students decide what facts were the most interesting, and use their comments to spur a class discussion comparing sharks to other mammals the class has studied. A useful way to do this would be to use a venn diagram tool on the interactive whiteboard or projector, allowing all students to participate at once. Use the images on this site to create a visual discovery activity in your classroom, introducing the topic of Solar Flares, or another outer space related topic. Select 3-5 images from this site, choosing the most powerful and moving images. Placing the images on individual slides, allow students 1-2 minutes to observe each image. During that time period, students should be taking notes based on what they observe, predict and infer about each image. The more powerful and detailed the image is, the more information students can take out. After the class has observed all the chosen images, have a class discussion based on the notes students took. There are several Modules here to choose from. Select a few for small groups in your class to explore. As students explore, have them take notes with an online tool like Simplenote, reviewed here, have them share the info they learned with their small group. Tell students to be sure to save the URL to share their notes and questions with you and their peers. Make sure students compare notes and fill in their own with important information they may have missed. Simple note allows you to access and update across all devices. Take this a step further and challenge students to share their learning with the rest of their classmates and create a multimedia presentation using Sway, reviewed here. Sway offers tools to easily create professsional looking presentations, brochures, interactive posters, and newsletters. Take advantage of these free lesson plans for any unit on astronomy. Search the site to find the appropriate lesson tools, and bring them up on an interactive whiteboard or projector. A lot of the activities can be used for a class activity, or you could also break students up into cooperative learning groups and have them complete them separately. Make sure to post this site on your teacher web page to allow students to access it both in and out of the classroom for review. Challenge cooperative learning groups create podcasts demonstrating their understanding of one of the concepts.
