This site is an interactive, collaborative project that uses Google maps with you and your students to provide content. You can also see Math maps created by others. By following the directions, you can create math problems utilizing information from your own city or town. Once the math problems are posted on the map, you can tweet or blog to inform others about them. In addition to creating problems, your students can view the contributions of others and solve real world math problems. Be aware: pop-up messages do appear across the bottom of the screen. These messages are recent posts to the site. Teachers who wish to contribute must submit a Gmail address to be offered access to add their own "Maths Maps." (Note to U.S. educators and students: What you know as "math" is known as "maths" in the UK, Australia, and some other countries. The "s" is NOT a typo!)

In the Classroom
What makes this site special is that the content comes directly from educators and students. Use the existing math problems as a challenge activity or to demonstrate how math can be used in the real world. Share the maps and math questions on your interactive whiteboard or projector. The different pin colors represent different age groups so you can choose appropriately leveled math problems. You can easily differentiate for individuals by telling them which color to explore. This site is a great way to get your students to learn more about their community. Have your students research a community spot and create a math problem about it as a class. Enter the information onto the map together or under teacher supervision for other classes all over the world to use. Prezi is a web-based presentation tool that uses a zoomable canvas to help users organize and present ideas in a dynamic, visual way. Unlike traditional slide-by-slide presentations, Prezi allows creators to show the "big picture" and then zoom in on supporting details, making connections between ideas clear and engaging. Users can choose a template or background, follow guided prompts, and quickly build a presentation to share. Prezi also offers an Explore gallery where teachers and students can view and reuse presentations created by others as templates. The platform works on any device with a web browser and supports real-time collaboration, allowing multiple users to work on the same Prezi at once. A free education plan is available with a verified school email and includes private presentations, while standard free accounts have public sharing and limited storage options.

In the Classroom
You could map your entire lesson, chapter or unit in one Prezi. Once you introduce the concept with this tool, you can go back to it often with your students as you move to different parts of the unit. It would provide a great way to connect prior knowledge with the next step if you share this on your interactive whiteboard or projector throughout the unit. Or you could post it to your web page or give kids the URL so they can review as often as they need it. Try having the students map a concept or chapter with this tool. In history class, create timelines of relevant events, or in science or math class have them map steps in a process. Have students create Prezis for different events, and then have them post the link to their product on a class blog or wiki. Add a peer review component and require students to comment on at least two other Prezis. The possibilities are endless!If you have gifted students n your class, offer Prezi as one alternative for sharing extensions to the regular curriculum. If they already know the material, have them investigate a related process or example and share it in the form of a Prezi.

Students will enjoy comparing their knowledge with students around the country and the world through the interactive quizzes on this site. Six subject categories are offered (math, civics, history, geography, science, and economics)at 3 different grade levels (4th, 8th, and 12th). You can also choose 5, 10, 15, or 20 questions. Upon completion of quizzes, scores are shown along with all correct answers. Questions are provided from Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS), Civic Education Study (CivEd) and National Assessment of Education Progress (NAEP) - all are institutes which are involved in assessing student achievement and performance. The questions are higher level, and many include diagrams and other visual aids.
In the Classroom
Introduce this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector as a pre-assessment for a new unit or as a mind bending class challenge. Reinforce and review lessons previously learned with your students. This is a terrific site during the run-up to high stakes testing. Use the questions as classroom conversation starters after taking the quizzes. Print out questions from the quizzes and provide your students with the correct answers and see if they can match them up with the questions. List this link on your class website for students to practice at home. Challenge small groups of students to create their own set of 5 questions about a current unit of study and create a multimedia presentation. Consider allowing students to share a favorite word of the day for 30 seconds on your interactive whiteboard at the start of class. Use this in a word study unit by covering up the original word.Students will then try to discover the word based on the word relationships found around the word. Winner of a 2009 Youth Webby Award, Tate Kids connects the art of the past and present to the world of blogging, on-line activities, storytelling, and craft making. Each project cleverly weaves in a child friendly art history or theory lesson. Features such as "Tate Paint" invite viewers to create and share their own animated masterpiece on-line. Students can select pieces from the Tate Kids Collection or upload their own artwork into the "My Gallery" space and create a personal virtual museum available to visitors around the world. This site screens all submissions before they appear on-line and provides safety tips for children to review with an adult. Signing up for the "My Gallery" option requires a username and password, but no email address is required. Create a sunset reminiscent of Joseph Turner's paintings or experiment body movements suggestive of Bruce Nauman's performance art. Activities such as these and many more craft ideas are located on the "Tate Create" page. The site includes a complete list of materials, procedures, and helpful hints needed for the activities. Each lesson is kid tested at the Tate Gallery itself and corresponds to works of art either on display at the Tate or a part of their permanent collection. The site was created in the UK, so some of the pronunciations and spellings may differ from those in American English.

The website's on-line activities and films are all compatible with an interactive whiteboard. Some lessons contain black line masters of artwork that are available for download. If you plan on using the "My Gallery" feature with your class, check with your administrator to be sure that your school allows students to set up individual accounts on on-line sites. Be sure to include this site on your class web page for students to access during summer break or for creative family activities at home.

Roam the halls of the Louvre without having to sign one field trip form (or gather passports). This virtual museum experience contains an on-line collection of 35,000 pieces and spans across 60,000 square feet. Features such as "My Personal Space," allow you to bookmark and store your own personalized art collections in multiple albums. Each art piece includes a label that states basic information such as the name of the artist, date, period, and medium. For more in depth information simply click the label and view a short narrative written by the Louvre's own curators and staff. Search their database by keywords or exact phrases or use the "kaleidoscope" to locate artwork organized by themes such as: mythology, landscape, and even sports. By downloading 3Dvia, you can also view imaginary architecture and exhibitions in 3D. The work displayed at the Louvre spans from the medieval period to 1848.

The possibilities for using this website in the classroom are as extensive as the Louvre itself. Liven up your Greek Mythology unit by accessing the "Kaleidoscope" mythology theme to learn how various gods and their stories appear in fine art. View the site in French and have your class speaking and reading French as they stroll through the halls of the Louvre. Link your study of the French Revolution to paintings such as Delacroix's "Lady Liberty." While studying World History, reading Machiavelli's masterpiece "The Prince" or Vasari's biographies in "Lives of the Artist," view the work of artists who lived through the political unrest of the Renaissance. The site does not provide prefabricated lessons for teachers but is an excellent resource for re-search and project-based learning. Word clouds show not only the words in the text sample, but also display the frequency of the words by showing often used words in a larger font. No login or registration required. Click "Create a word cloud," enter or paste your text and then click "word it out." View your word cloud, drag the arrows on the sides of the screen to make larger or smaller, and change the colors and specifics of the word cloud in the space below. Click "Save" to save as either public or private (an email address is required to save.)

In the Classroom
You need to know how to copy/paste text passages (ctrl or command + C, then ctrl or command + V to paste. Think Velcro to stick it there!). If you wish to Save, you must join the site (email required). Alternately, capture the image using screen capture (apple/shift/4 on a Mac or Print Screen on a PC.)Use a word cloud in virtually any class. With emergent readers, enter multiple words with the same consonant cluster or vowel sound, so they can SEE a visual grouping of that sound on your interactive whiteboard and guess the sound. Project a teacher-created word cloud at the start of a new lesson or unit and have students determine what the lesson will be about. Have students use word clouds to proof their own essays or stories. Use word clouds for students to identify the subject and frequently used words to check if they are on target with their intended message. Have students find overused words in their own writing as part of lessons on word choice. Teachers could create and save a word cloud then share it as a visual prompt for students to work individually or in groups to identify words they know (and the definitions) as well as the words they are unfamiliar with. Create word clouds of passages or stories and allow students to guess the author, title, subject, or meaning of the story. Underscore motifs in literature by creating clouds of passages, especially poetry. Have students work together to make clouds of alternative ways to say "said" or "went" in story-writing to post in your classroom as a reference. Create word clouds of opinion passages to determine the bias of the author and possible reasons for that specific opinion. Make word cloud posters on health topics such as the potential health risks of smoking. Make word clouds of different food groups. Create higher order thinking activities by approaching text in a unique way.

This site from the Denver Art Museum is just the ticket for arts-related lesson plans and ideas for your language arts, social studies, or visual art classes. Search lesson plans by age level, resource type, and more. Colorado standards are included. Or browse by image to find related lesson plans. Search artworks by country/culture, medium, period, and region. Each of these categories has a drop-down list with multiple items. There are highly motivating lesson plans for each piece of art. For example, "A Face to Remember - Mummy Case" explores Ancient Egypt for grades 6-12. "(Students) will research information about the ancient Egyptians and explore how their findings are visually represented on the DAM's mummy case. Students ...design a mummy case that reflects their personal values and beliefs." During this lesson, students are introduced to two-column notes for recording their research. The Early Childhood lesson entitled "Bubbles" has students look closely at a work of art using bubbles!

In the Classroom
Use a projector or interactive whiteboard so everyone can view the art work at once. Small groups can write down their observations about the art and then share with the whole class. From there the lesson plans can take over with loads of ideas for how to proceed. Don't forget to have students navigate and annotate artworks on interactive whiteboards. It is the ideal tool for annotating images. Free Clip Art by Phillip Martin is an extensive collection of clipart. All the clipart is free to use in the classroom, in newsletters or presentations. As long as the use is for non-profit, it may be downloaded and used free of charge. Categories included in the site are Language Arts, Science, Social Sciences, Holidays, School, A to Z, and More. Each of the above categories has countless sub-categories within them. No registration is necessary and the site is extremely simple to navigate. Of course you will want to model and require ethical use of these resources by giving credit to the source of clips in a small note or text box on your projects. There are some unobtrusive advertisements at the site.

This site is great if you need some clever clipart to jazz up student handouts, classroom bulletin boards or PowerPoint/Keynote presentations. There is also web clipart that you can use for your blog, class webpage, or wiki. Interested in learning more about wikis? Check out the TeachersFirst's Wiki Walk-Through. When using the clipart be sure to download to your computer first before inserting into an application. Copying it directly from the web site puts a black background behind your image. Have students use this site in science class (or other classes to explain concepts and create colorful projects. Click on the "Lesson Plan & Curriculum Store" link for a simple search engine that accesses a large database of PDF lessons plans from Law Focused Education, Inc. related to your search. Search by topic and grade level, to narrow your results to make selection easier. Click on "Online Games & Student Involvement" for interactive games designed for the Middle School level that deal with a wide variety of US Law related topics. Although this site is designed for educators in the state of Texas, most of the resources deal with topics that relate to US civics and Law.

The lesson plans are in PDF format, so they can easily be saved and printed. While the lesson plans are aligned to Texas State standards, they can easily be adapted to other state standards. Google for Education's Learning Center Course Catalog is a comprehensive professional development platform offering free training for educators at all skill levels. The catalog includes a variety of learning resources ranging from quick, focused Google lessons that take under 10 minutes to complete, to in-depth courses organized into units that require 30 minutes to a few hours of study time. Sample topics include "Manage Your Files in Google Drive," "Organize and Search Your Gmail," "Create Surveys and Quizzes in Google Forms," and many others. Teachers can filter courses by their expertise level (such as beginner) and build a customized learning curriculum to master Google education tools for classroom use and beyond. The platform also features community-created resources--guides and video tutorials submitted by fellow educators--allowing teachers to learn practical tips and strategies from peers who are implementing these tools in real classrooms. The Department of Economic Education aims at educating students on the intricacies and importance of economics. This brief interactive slide presentation about Consumers has colorful drawings, easy vocabulary, and concepts understandable for students. There is also a simple drag and drop activity. This site can be used in conjunction with another presentation about Producers (reviewed here) to teach the concepts of consumers and producers as well as goods and services.
In the Classroom
Have students watch these presentations as an introduction to an Economics unit about Producers and Consumers during center time or as a whole group activity. Extend these presentations into a theme unit that includes goods and services. Economics can be a challenging concept to exemplify especially for younger students. "Producers" is a very brief presentation that includes colorful drawings, easy vocabulary, a drag and drop activity, and is simple for students to understand. This site can be used in conjunction with the Consumer presentation (reviewed here) to teach the concepts of consumers and producers.
In the Classroom
Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use these sites as an introduction to a simple Economics unit about Producers and Consumers. This would be a great opportunity to begin using money as a method of payment or a discussion on trading and bartering. Extend these presentations into a theme unit that includes goods and services. DLTK's Custom Chore Chart provides an easy, quick way to create any type of chart. Charts can be created for chores, homework, behavior, reading, math facts, and any other type of information that can be monitored and displayed as a chart. Creating a chart is so simple that students can create their own and choose a theme that interests them. The site allows you to choose the theme (or create your own), the text color, text size, font, color or black and white for printing, what specifically goes into the columns and rows, and more. Since the themes are more juvenile, you may want to suggest the "create your own" option with older students. This site does not require any registration. Be aware there are minor pop-up ads which are rather annoying, but worth it for this free tool.

Create charts for a variety of needs. Charts always come in handy for students who struggle to stay on task or to complete assignments. Charts are a fun and tactile way for students to monitor their success and stay on target with responsibilities. Use a chart system to teach organization and self monitoring for things such as homework, chores or daily jobs, morning or end of day tasks and behavior, backpack organization, reading books, math skills, and whatever else you or your students can "chart." Use this tool in the beginning of a new school year to help with expectations or recording. Special ed and gifted teachers will want to have students create their own charts to take ownership for individual goals. This is also a great tool for students to use to record their success for specific New Year's resolutions. This is definitely a link you want to list on your class website for parents to use at home.

Use this site to view pictures of Florida in 3D. Yes, you do need 3D glasses. Use inexpensive red and blue lens glasses to view these pictures which have been altered to be more accessible to students. Most stereoscopic pictures require special viewer glasses. Follow the directions to be sure you are using the red/blue lenses correctly. View pictures of the cities and towns, landscape, military history, environment, and transportation. Looking for something in particular? Click on "Search Exploring Florida" to find a specific item.
In the Classroom
Use this site with any social studies curriculum related to Florida locations to provide a sense of scale, make measurements of items seen, provide an overview of areas being studied, and a better context for what they are studying. For earth science, view pictures of landscapes to identify geologic structures learned in class. In any curricular area, view the 3D pictures to gain perspective into the structures, environment, and lives of the people in Florida's history. Challenge cooperative learning groups to explore one of the many topics presented at this site and create a multimedia presentation.
