The National Museum of the American Indian contains an expansive collection of Native American artifacts. In addition, the museum's online offerings share photographs, media, and additional resources for educators and students. Browse through the homepage to view current exhibits and events; online events are clearly labeled, and there is a different section with a link to all online resources. Be sure to visit this site section to find links to various topics, including poetry, Native American women, and much more. Select the link from the dropdown box at the top of the page to view materials provided for educators. Included in the resources for educators is Native Knowledge 360 Education Initiative, reviewed here, which offers many teaching resources, including lessons, media, and professional development webinars. If your district blocks YouTube, then the videos may not be viewable.

Be sure to bookmark this site for use with lessons on Thanksgiving, using primary sources, or when teaching about Native Americans. This site states that it is "the world's largest public domain media search engine" and provides access to millions of public domain objects to view and download. Use Picryl to search for specific items such as Abraham Lincoln or Abraham Lincoln's papers. Sort information to view just text, images, or collections. Additional filters allow you to narrow down the time frame to include or select from suggested tags. Picryl also offers over 2,000 collections featuring various topics that range from lighthouses to glassblowing. After choosing an item, use the download link to save it to your device and access information to credit the source. Registration isn't required; however, it provides access to source URL information and allows you to create collections from resources found on Picryl.

Perusall is a social learning platform that integrates e-reading, annotations, and collaboration as part of the learning process. After completing the account registration, educators begin creating a course by assigning content. In order to create a course, your school must be on the list of included institutions. Otherwise, you need to contact Perusall support to finish setting up a course. Use your documents or upload Open Educational Resources (OER) found on the web. Next, add instructions or annotations to guide students as they begin the assignment. As students access the reading assignment, they engage with the content and other students by adding comments, inserting questions, highlighting text, and more. User comments appear within a chat stream that encourages ongoing discussions of the material. Options such as dark mode, resizing text, and others within Perusall provide accommodations for the various needs of learners.

Find many options for OER materials at the TeachersFirst Open Educational Resources Special Topics Page, found here. Engage students by using Perusall as part of remote learning lessons, blended learning, or flipped lessons. Perusall is an excellent tool to use as an introduction to new learning materials; ask students to read and respond to a text, then use student responses to guide your learning activities. Extend learning by responding to student comments with links to additional support materials such as videos, online articles, or infographics. As an enhanced learning activity, ask students to select a portion of the material shared in Perusall to begin an extended research project. Ask students to share their learning using one of the many free presentation tools on the TeachersFirst Edge. Some tool suggestions are (click on the tool name to access the review): Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, Animatron, Renderforest, and Google Slides.

Password Folder allows Windows users to create password-protected folders on their PCs using downloadable software tools. Once downloaded and installed, add a password to protect any folder in three clicks. Begin by selecting the file to download to your device and following the installation and setup directions. Once installed, select any folder and add a password; protected folders turn red and then display a lock icon to indicate they are locked. To open a protected folder, click open as usual and enter the password. Use different passwords for each folder, or select the "One password for all folders" option to lock multiple folders with one password.

Use the Wheel of Life to create a visual image for evaluating historical and literary characters. The wheel offers up to eight categories to edit and use in evaluations. Begin with the included examples, such as citizenship, health, and joy, or click on any category titles to change them to fit your needs. After identifying categories, use the slider bars to rate your character in each category using a scale of 1 to 10. As ratings are assigned, the display on the wheel adjusts to reflect the rating and matches the color on the slider bar. Next, use the text boxes on the right side of the screen to give your wheel a title and explain each of the choices made. When finished, save or print your Wheel of Life.

The Wheel of Life template is an interesting addition to current classroom resources for evaluating literary or historical characters. Ask students to share their thoughts on the essential characteristics to include when assessing characters and ask them to justify their inclusions. For example, when discussing Abraham Lincoln, is it important to include wealth, or is there a better trait to include that defines his impact on society? Ask groups of students to create a Wheel of Life based upon characters, then compare and contrast what they included and found necessary to include as character traits. Use student-created templates to highlight important information to include when writing biographies or when creating presentations. Share completed reports using a one-page website creator such as About.me, reviewed here.

Freedom on the Move is a compilation of thousands of stories of fugitives from North American slavery. The database uses "runaway ads" from newspapers to provide details on the individual lives involved in the anti-slavery movement. Begin by selecting the link to search the database of over 10,000 ads. Narrow results using filters for locations and type of ads, information on the runaway or enslaver, and the date of the runaway event. The download search offers many more filters and is available to download as a CSV or JSON file. Also, be sure to visit the area for K-12 educators that includes lessons and teaching activities for grades 3-8.

In the Classroom

Include this database with your other resources when studying Black history, the Civil War, or American History during the early to mid-1800s. Engage students by sharing this site and allowing them time to explore on their own by searching by your location. Each of the ads provides interesting details and descriptions that provoke class discussions and perspectives on the treatment of enslaved people. As students learn and research more information about fugitives from slavery, use Genially, reviewed here, to create interactive images that share additional information about the location, the role of enslaved people, and possible journeys to freedom. As an extension activity, ask groups of students to collaboratively create a map of the journey to freedom of some of the enslaved people found in the site's database using Google My Maps, reviewed here. In addition to mapping the journey, Google My Maps allows you to add links to additional information, videos, and primary source information to provide a complete overview of the difficulties encountered as a fugitive from slavery.

Free accounts for individual use offer unlimited public maps, three private maps, and storage of images and files of up to 3MB. Begin by creating a personal account with your email address and password. Next, take advantage of the demo to learn how to add and edit items using your dashboard. When ready, create a new mind map or folder by clicking the blue plus button. Next, add text, images, a calendar, maps, and files. When finished, use the share link to copy the URL, print it, or export it as an image file.

Straw.Page is a website creation tool and blogging platform that works on any device, even phones. No registration is required to begin creating using themes or from a blank page. Begin by selecting the Get Started for Free button, then browse through the included templates. After choosing a template, follow the tutorial to learn about features available on Straw.Page. When finished, publish your page by adding your email and a password and creating your unique URL to share with viewers. The free option allows you to post two sites that include up to five pages each.

Add Straw.Page to your list of website creation tools to offer for students to use for many different projects. Google Read Along is an entertaining, interactive website designed to help young children learn to read. This site is currently available in English, Portuguese, Spanish, Hindi, Marathi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Gujarati, and Urdu. Though you can use Google Read Along on your computer, the best experience will be by using an Android device. Read Along engages young readers with a friendly character named Diya, who provides assistance and feedback when needed. Students receive immediate feedback by earning stars for each word they read correctly. In addition, Diya will help if children are stuck on a particular word. Gamification makes learning to read fun and engaging! Students earn stars and badges and can level up to more advanced books as they become increasingly better readers. Google Read Along also tracks how many minutes students spend actively reading. A Google account is required, and enable your microphone access for your browser.

In the Classroom

Google Read Along would be a great addition to any preschool or early elementary classroom. Teachers who work with ENL students or adults learning to read may also find this site helpful. Students will gain confidence by practicing reading independently yet still get assistance if needed, all while the teacher can work with individual students or small groups. In addition, many books are cross-curricular, so they can be used to enhance instruction for other core subjects.

Download free slide templates for Google Slides and PowerPoint from Slidesgo. Free accounts offer up to ten monthly downloads after registration on the site. Find templates in many different ways, use a keyword search, sort by color, choose from recent and popular downloads, or select categories, including education templates. After selecting a template, click on the link to the version for your download. When choosing a Google Slideshow, Slidego prompts you to copy the document into your Google Drive. Powerpoint slides download to your device. Another option allows you to share a template directly to Google Classroom. A new feature of Slidesgo is the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Presentation Maker. Just type in your description.

In the Classroom

Take advantage of the many slide templates shared on this site to spice up your slide presentations and to share with students to use for their creations. Include a link to Slidesgo on classroom computers and your class webpage for easy access to all users. Keep in mind the limit of ten monthly downloads; consider creating an account for each class if necessary. Use the provided templates to create certificates throughout the school year to award student accomplishments or use the flashcard templates to introduce and practice vocabulary terms. Include student presentations as part of portfolios created in Seesaw, reviewed here, to share with parents during parent/teacher conferences.

Stickies is a collaborative whiteboard for teams that use stickies to share and organize group ideas. In addition to posting sticky notes, Stickies intuitively assigns colors to messages based on the participant's text. For example, "I like" notes turn green, "I wish" is orange, and "We will" becomes blue. After creating an account, double-click on the board to start a new Stickies, then click to add a sticky note. Next, use the plus sign on the dashboard to email and add collaborators. As stickies are added, drag and drop items on the board to organize as desired. You can also make groups by piling the Stickies on top of each other, and you can vote for your favorite ideas. Incognito mode adds a helpful feature when working with collaborators, turn on incognito and set a timer to allow participants a set amount of time to think privately before sharing their sticky.

Save Stickies with your other bookmarks as a handy tool for student collaboration and organizing information throughout the year. For example, engage students in book discussions by creating a Stickies board and asking students to add stickies with details about characters, plot, and setting. Follow up by asking students to color code and organize labels based on the information. In this instance, character information might be yellow, plot blue, etc. Stickies is also an excellent tool to include with social-emotional learning activities. For example, encourage students to share sentences that begin with the "I like," "I wish," and "We will" formats as a tool for goal-setting.
