Here's a great explanation of all aspects of Writer's Workshop. Activities from 'Mini-lessons' to 'Sharing' (and all steps in-between) leading up to the crucial role of sharing student writing in group reading sessions are each discussed on this web page. Be sure to click "5 Editing Strategies That Actually Work For Student Writers." Once students understand how to edit someone elses work, their writing improves. This is a wealth of usable information for a teacher new to Writer's Workshop.

This site would be an excellent motivating tool for students participating in writing and literature. Save the site as a learning center or station, and allow students both to peruse the stories and submit their own stories to be published. Stories are separated by genre, making it easier to tailor student's focus during a particular unit. During a poetry unit, instruct students to examine only the poetry and to submit their own. Students strengthen skills in process writing, creative thinking, inductive reasoning, and cooperative work by using detective fiction. After working together to solve a mysterious "murder" among the book stacks in the school library, students are introduced to a collection of children's detective novels representing a wide range of reading levels and cultural settings. While class lessons apply to any and all selections, each student is assigned a book that reflects his/her individual reading level.
In the Classroom
As a class, try to solve this literary mystery which involves a murder among the bookshelves in a library. While working on solving who did it, students will learn about a wide variety of intermediate detective novels. Have student pair or small groups of students pick whichever one is of the most interest and get it either online or make a trip to the school library to find the book. Have the pairs or small groups report out about their book to their peers after completion. Be sure they plan out their presentation by using a storyboard creator such as SuperNotecard. Students can then finalize their presentations using a tool like Make Beliefs Comix, or Powtoon. Pair weaker readers with a stronger one and have student pairs read the information Have students create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. Students could then copy over the plan they have for their own hero's journey in their blog. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or X (formerly Twitter) links. Instead of a one-time professional development session, consider creating an ongoing podcast using Buzzsprout, reviewed here to share new technology tools, provide advice and tips, and answer common questions.
