The Transformational Learning Principles™ https://iste-ascd.org/tlps

In an age where education is evolving faster than ever, K–12 educators are expected to prepare students for a rapidly changing, tech-integrated world. The ISTE+ASCD Transformational Learning Principles are a powerful framework designed to guide educators in creating meaningful, equitable, and future-ready learning experiences. Whether you’re teaching kindergarteners how to collaborate or preparing high schoolers for global citizenship, these principles offer a roadmap for transforming traditional instruction into deep, student-centered learning.

Developed collaboratively by the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) and the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD), these seven research-based principles aim to align innovative, tech-enabled teaching with whole-child development. Here’s a brief overview of each principle and some practical ways to incorporate them into your classroom:

  1. Student-Driven Learning: Learners take ownership of their education by setting goals, making decisions, and reflecting on their progress.
  2. Authentic, Purposeful Learning: Lessons connect to real-world issues and students’ lives, making learning more relevant and motivating.
    • Design real-world projects. Integrate community issues into assignments (e.g., local environmental studies) and/or partner with local organizations or businesses for authentic problem-solving tasks.
  3. Inquiry-Based, Exploratory Learning: Students are encouraged to ask questions, experiment, and engage in discovery-driven learning.
    • Promote curiosity by beginning units with driving questions and letting students co-create investigations. Use tools like a Wonder Wall or Genius Hour to encourage exploration.
  4. Culturally Responsive and Sustaining: Teaching reflects and respects students’ cultures, identities, and experiences, ensuring all voices are valued.
    • Honor identities and cultures by incorporating diverse texts, perspectives, and languages into your curriculum. Celebrate students’ heritages and community contributions in your classroom culture.
  5. Human-Centered, Inclusive Design: Environments and learning experiences are created with empathy, accessibility, and student well-being at the center.
    • Use Universal Design for Learning (UDL) to support diverse learners. Build in time for mindfulness, reflection, and social-emotional check-ins.
  6. Future-Ready Skills Development: Instruction emphasizes building skills like critical thinking, collaboration, digital literacy, and adaptability.
  7. Equity-Driven Leadership and Practice: Educational systems and educators work to remove barriers and create inclusive opportunities for all learners.
    • Lead with equity in mind. Examine your teaching materials and assessments for bias and advocate for access to technology, enrichment, and support services for all students.

This framework is about transforming, not just tweaking. The ISTE+ASCD Transformational Learning Principles aren’t about adding more to your plate—they’re about rethinking how we teach so learning is more connected, inclusive, and empowering. Start small: take the ISTE+ASCD Transformational Learning Principles Self-Assessment, choose one principle to focus on, reflect on your practice, and build from there. Learning isn’t a destination—it’s a journey. By embracing these principles, you’re helping shape a future where all students thrive.
