Be sure to see the video interviews with many modern day women "heroes" such as former first lady Rosalynn Carter, pilot Emily Warner, astronomer Dr. Judith Pipher, and several others.

This site would be useful as a resource for teachers who assign "heroes" biographies, particularly during Women's History month. As a class activity, or in small groups, brainstorm a list of modern women, not included on this site, for a future nomination. The site is easy to read and simple to navigate. Be sure to click on the Myths and Legends to see how the Bald Eagle has been viewed throughout history. Students with reading disabilities or low reading levels may need to some assistance with Native American verbiage.

This site has links to everything you ever wanted to know about the Elizabeth world from a Compendium of Life in Elizabethan England to Heraldry to the transcripts of the trials of the Earls of Essex and Southampton. It also includes a link to a list of more than a hundred recommended sites for the Renaissance and Elizabethan times.Teachers of everything from world history to Shakespeare will find something to mine at this site. The Compendium of Elizabethan Life is especially interesting to those students who want to know "how things worked" 500 years ago in the time of Will Shakespeare. While this is a great research sourcefor Shakespeare, it is also good for drama, literature, and history for all sorts of activities.

Ben Franklin is one of America's most colorful patriots. His accomplishments as legislator, diplomat, and scientist were recognized as extraordinary even in his own day. Philadelphia's Franklin Institute has a memorial to Franklin. You can include it in your Philadelphia visit, or learn more about it here.

Step inside one of Philadelphia's important Revolutionary-era landmarks with this concise virtual-tour stop from USHistory.org. The Carpenter's Hall page explains the building's connection to the First Continental Congress, the Carpenters' Company, architect Robert Smith, and the First Bank of the United States. Students can also examine details of the building's Georgian architecture, learn about people including George Washington, John Adams, Samuel Adams, and Patrick Henry, and explore several quick historical facts. An image and location map add visual context. Teachers should note that the page's tourism information is dated because it still says the building would be closed until December 2022. The official Carpenters' Hall site currently identifies the building as open to the public, so use that site for current visitor information.

Explore Spanish colonial history and Florida's coastal ecosystems through the National Park Service's Fort Matanzas National Monument website. The site focuses on the fortified coquina watchtower completed in 1742 to protect the southern approach to Spanish St. Augustine, and introduces nearly 300 acres of dunes, salt marsh, maritime forest, beaches, plants, and wildlife. Teachers will find ready-to-go educational materials especially useful, including lesson plans, virtual experiences, field-trip resources, Junior Ranger activities, short videos, and distance-learning opportunities. Lessons connect history, primary-source analysis, science, climate change, and environmental studies, with materials available for learners from prekindergarten through high school. Some additional park videos link to YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, you may not be able to view the videos.

Invite students to complete an exit-ticket argument answering whether Fort Matanzas should be preserved and what responsibilities citizens have toward historic and natural resources. Use the NPS discussion questions as a starting point, then have students cite one historical and one environmental piece of evidence from the site. Have students compare Fort Matanzas with another colonial fort by sorting similarities and differences in purpose, materials, geography, and defensive design, then record their conclusions with 2 and 3 Interactive Venn Diagrams by Class Tools, reviewed here. This site is actually part of the Williamsburg Interactive page, but its value to historical understanding warranted its own TeachersFirst review. Click your cursor on buildings and you'll be taken to just that area. Then, you will be given information about that area and its inhabitants. If you have a whiteboard or projector, you will have a captivated class. Individual or paired computer experience will allow your students to walk through the streets on their own. How about having a cyber-scavenger hunt? You will need to walk through the town yourself to find tidbits along the way, then later, ask the students to find them. They must give you the location where they were found.Younger students will need to be shown how to cyber-walk through the streets. You can ask them to report to you about the citizens they meet along the way. Ask students to draw their own colonial town based upon a layout like Williamsburg.

This site profiles a wide variety of achievers from the arts, science, sports, and business. Each achiever profile features a short biography, a discussion of his or her significance, a photo gallery and an interview. Most of the interviews feature audio and video clips of the achiever as well. The achievers are grouped by area and in an alphabetical drop down list. One great feature is that the achievers are also grouped by character attribute (referred to as their "key to success"):passion, courage, perseverance, integrity, and a neat category called "The American Dream."

If you assign any kind of "hero," "pioneer," or "leader" biography project, this site is a fabulous resource for students. The list of achievers includes many who may not be instantly recognizable to students and therefore provide more potential for discovery. In addition, the site is large enough and well-enough organized that students can start with this site and "dig" for a possible achiever to research, either by achievement area or by character trait. The site includes a diverse group of achievers, so is also useful if you're doing Women's History or Black History projects. The story of the first settlement at Jamestown usually features the brave Indian princess Pocahontas. This site provides a retelling of the Pocahantas story by the people of the Powhatan tribe-- a rewriting that questions whether Pocahontas actually saved John Smith at all. The site takes particular exception to the recent Disney movie, Pocahontas. The discussion outlined here would make a very good "counterpoint" lesson on the generally accepted story of the Jamestown settlement.

Students usually enjoy "debunking" myths of history and learning ways that their teachers or textbooks might be wrong. This site provides another viewpoint in the well-known Pocahontas story. There are also possibilities here for discussions of racial stereotyping and the way Pocahontas is portrayed in the media, particularly in the Walt Disney film. This amazing library, part of Michigan State's library system, offers information about speeches, recordings, and news broadcasts featuring over 100,000 famous and not so famous personages. Not all items are digitized, but many are available in MP3 format. Those that can be played on your computer will have the word "Listen" as a link to play the file. The serach tools are a bit cumbersome, but there are terrific primary sources here.

This privately done digitized library focuses on books published before 1923, primarily those with magnificent illustrations. Books digitized are in the public domain and are also available through the large digitization projects underway, such as Google Books. This site's charm is its ease of use. Users can search by the author's last name or by using a list of subject categories. Because the project is relatively small, it's fun to browse through the offerings before deciding on a specific choice. The quality of the digitization is excellent and appears to offer complete works. Some books have been reformatted, presumably to allow viewing consistency.

Because these books are in the public domain (i.e., older), their language is not "contemporary." The texts would make excellent reading comprehension passages or cultural studies of past times, and you need not worry about copying/pasting text from these into other software or making copies. You could even use them as passages on an interactive whiteboard to practice "main idea" or parts of speech.The illustrations are beautiful and straightforward. Print out some great artwork for your classroom bulletin boards, copyright-free!
The myths/legends collection would be great for upper elementary or later mythology units. Students can also use the passages and illustrations to create multimedia "tales" of their own. Give them the opening passage and let them write the rest.

You may not want to actually place your recording on the NPR site but instead house it locally on your school or community website. As major events occur in your community, such as an anniversary or the opening of a new school, engage your students in documenting the event. The general interview guides also offer useful interview techniques for school newspapers or news broadcasts.

This site is designed to be a resource for teachers and students on the atom bomb. There is an interactive time line, excellent graphics on the physics of the atom bomb, biographies of major characters in the story and good teacher resources including lesson plans. This site might be useful to both science and social studies teachers. The graphics on the physics of the atom bomb are great, but the historical context setting and discussion is also excellent. There are links to WebQuests, and information about California state standards met by the lesson plans.

ERIC was a government-sponsored clearinghouse for educational resources that has recently lost funding. This site maintains some of the files from the ERIC database, and in this case, focuses on resources relative to the internment of Japanese-Americans during World War II. It includes some very helpful suggestions for explaining this process to students and placing it in a larger context of civil rights, immigration, and the study of World War II.

Teachers have to walk a fine line between helping students see history as it was experienced at the time, and showing them what we may have learned from those events.
