In the Classroom

Share the e-Books from this site as an alternative to traditional writing prompts. Share with your school's guidance counselors as a resource for allowing students to express their feelings on a variety of topics. Have students create blogs to reflect on their learning using Telegra.ph, here. Telegra.ph will create a "quick and easy" blog to be used one time only. A unique URL is provided, and with Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. It's as easy as using a basic Word program! Challenge students to create an online comic sharing their perspective on one of the books. It's a good idea to require students to create a rough draft of their comic using Printable Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here. You might want to have students in grades 1-3 use ToonyTool, reviewed here, while older students can just use Zimmerman's favorite Make Beliefs Comix, reviewed here, to create their final copy.
 This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Amaze has animated videos providing factual and informative information about sexual development to adolescents aged 10-14. Their goal is to counter misinformation about puberty, sex, and sexuality while developing accurate representations of healthy body development and relationships. It is important to take note of ratings when viewing videos on Amaze. Green indicates videos appropriate for all young people and blue indicates videos suitable for those of the older range from 10 to 14 years old. Choose videos from the different categories or select favorite videos from the home page. Each video includes a "dig deeper" button with additional information for discussions. Be sure to check out the section for educators containing lesson plans for 5th and 6th grades, book suggestions, and other resources. Registration isn't necessary; however, it allows users to save favorites and create personalized video playlists. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

Be sure to follow suggestions for age appropriateness and have appropriate parental permission when using this site in the classroom. Share this site with school counselors and teachers of sex education. Use Amaze as a resource for discussions involving relationships, personal safety, and other teen and preteen issues. When appropriate, share a link to videos on your class webpage. Amaze is an excellent site to share with parents as they face difficult issues that arise during the teen years. Have students create personal blogs for their private reflection about these videos and discussions.

Use Mapping the Road to College as a valuable tool for understanding and exploring college admission requirements. Share with middle school students to help understand the importance of standardized testing when applying to college. Older students will benefit from using the interactive to explore different colleges and universities from around the country and their academic profiles. Instead of having students use a pen and paper organizer exchange that with Padlet, reviewed here where they can make columns for comparing. Replace pen and paper and have students create blogs sharing information from their chosen college using a tool such as Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or Twitter links. This blog creator requires no registration.

Play the interactive to learn about coding skills, basics of secure passwords, identifying scam information, and defending against cyber attacks. As you play, meet cyber-experts and learn about a day in their life. Take quizzes to find out how codes protect online information and the motivation behind hackers and hacking of online information. Share this short video with your class as part of any discussions on autism. Stop the video at different points along the way to discuss the information and develop knowledge of how to understand and work with autistic students. Consider enhancing classroom technology use and giving all students a chance to voice their opinions (even the shy and quiet ones) by using a tool like Yo!Teach, reviewed here. Backchannel Chat is an easy tool to manage if you are starting the process of integrating technology into your classroom. If you and your students are more advanced with technology, you may want to modify technology use in your classroom with a tool such as Acclaim, reviewed here, where you AND your students can annotate, highlight, and ask questions or make observations about the content of the video. This video is also perfect for use during staff meetings as an introduction to considering tools and guidelines for working with autistic students. Include a link to this video on your class webpage to share with parents.

Each day students participate in a 10 minute Daily Quiz or Mindful Module activity with links to learning about different career programs. Include ChatterHigh as part of any career exploration opportunity for students. This site was created in Canada, so many quizzes relate to Canadian sites; however, the information may be useful for many career searches. Use the information found on quizzes as the basis for students creating their own questions for career and college searches. After researching information, have students make a multimedia presentation to discuss with their peers what they discovered about a career path they may want to take. Replace traditional presentations by using Slides, reviewed here, if you are starting the process of integrating technology into your classroom. Slides is an easy tool to manage if you are familiar with PowerPoint or Keynote. If you and your students are more advanced with technology, enhance their learning with a tool such as Canva for Education, reviewed here, for students to create a custom, multimedia poster, presentation, or flyer for the career path they are interested in pursuing.

This site is a perfect addition to any creative writing class or any teachers who would like to have students create a digital story as a project. Share videos on your interactive whiteboard to watch together, or embed onto your class website for students to view on their own. Take advantage of the activities to help students identify what makes them connect to their favorite movies. Have students or groups collect ideas and findings. With younger or less technically experienced students, use an online tool such as Padlet, reviewed here, for the collection of ideas. The Padlet application creates free online bulletin boards. With older or more technically experienced students, use a tool such as Voxer, reviewed here, for students to discuss what they learned. Voxer is a combination of instant voice and text messages. You can also text images.

In the Classroom

Although geared toward middle school students and educators, anyone who teaches weather will want to take the time to explore this site for student and teacher resources. From the top right menu find the Educators section for activities, science fair ideas, and content aligned to standards. Share a link to games and activities on classroom computers and your class website. Upon completing activities, have students create an online or printed comic about an element of weather, climate, meteorology, or any aspect of Earth science. Use a tool such as Printable Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here, for a nontech rough and final draft. If you're new to using technology with your students, or teach younger students enhance their learning and augment techology use with ToonyTool, reviewed here, for their final drafts. To to enhance learning and modify tech use in your class for more experienced, older students try Make Beliefs Comix, reviewed here.

Infographic Portal offers an extensive collection of infographics sub-divided into several categories. In addition to viewing infographics on the site, under Infographic Designers, see design tips, and then submit original designs for inclusion on the site. Choose categories from topics listed at the top of the website with an orange background. Infographics in the education section include titles such as Verb Grammar Rules: Your Complete Handbook and A Typical School Week Around the World. Be sure to review the site before sharing with students, some images may not be suitable for all ages or school-appropriate.

Take advantage of the infographics on this site for both classroom use and professional development. Introduce a topic by sharing the Infographic and allowing time for students (or peers) to identify various items they notice about the chart. Allow students the chance to think-pair-share and list questions for further understanding. Choose a new infographic each week to share on your classroom website. Make curriculum content more real with infographics students can relate to. Consider creating Infographics of material students are learning in class for better understanding and connection with other topics and the world around them. Have students create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Infogram, reviewed here.

Affordable Colleges Online provides extensive information about the costs and the programs offered for online degrees. Use tabs at the top of each page to view by degrees, majors, states, rankings, or additional resources. Other options allow viewers to see colleges offering cheap, quality online degrees, explore accreditation, and search for religious college options. One resource worth exploring is the section describing options for financial aid, including many valuable statistics and information for finding the most financial aid.

The ASVAB Test (Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery) is designed to be taken by incoming members of the military to determine aptitude for different areas of the service. This site provides questions emulating the test for anyone to take to help identify areas of interest and likely successful career choices. Take any or all portions online using the site, including science, math, word knowledge, paragraph comprehension, and mechanical options. In addition to practice tests, this site provides information about ASVAB testing, videos, and history. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Use this article to introduce any unit on alcohol or the dangers of driving while impaired. This information would be perfect to share before major social events such as prom or homecoming dances when student exposure to alcohol is common. After sharing this article, create a simple infographic sharing their findings using Visme , reviewed here. Invite a guest speaker into your classroom such as a police officer or community member that has seen the consequences of drunk driving to discuss the effects this has on individuals.

Try Engineering offers a wide variety of resources focused on engineering, computers, and associated careers. Explore the site as a student, teacher, parent, or counselor to learn more about planning a career path in engineering. Student information includes career profiles, games, and student opportunities to learn about different engineering options. Choose the teacher link to find complete lesson plans, activities, and featured engineers. Some of the lesson plans use YouTube for videos. If your district blocks YouTube, the videos may not be viewable.

Include the Try Engineering website when exploring career options with students, be sure to point it out to students with an interest in engineering and computers. Use the site to help students understand the various options available in engineering and computer careers and the education necessary for different roles. Whether you are teaching about plastics, robots, electricity or many other science topics, check this website out! Enhance student learning by having students create online posters detailing requirements of their chosen career using a tool such as PicFont, reviewed here, or Web Poster Wizard, reviewed here. Alternatively, have students create an infographic showing the steps needed to advance to a career in computers. Use an infographic tool such as Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here.
