7 to 12In the Classroom
Use this activity as a learning center or station during a unit on cladistics or evolution. Save this site as a favorite on classroom computers and have students complete the activity in pairs or cooperative learning groups. This would be a great activity during a Biology class. As an extension, students can summarize what they learned in an flow chart or graphic organizer such as Holt Interactive Graphic Organizers, reviewed here.Stories From the Fossil Record - U.C. In the Classroom
Introduce this activity with a projector or on an interactive whiteboard to show students how to navigate the site. Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to create their own concept maps sharing their learning and understanding using MindMup, reviewed here. Take this a step further and allow pairs or small groups of students to explore Related Activities and share what they learned with their peers using an interactive infographic like Canva, reviewed here. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as Spaces, reviewed here.Life Has a History - U.C. Berkeley

Then, in your flipped or blended classroom (or at a computer center), have students explore on their own. Ask students to create blogs sharing their learning and understanding using Telegra.ph, reviewed here. With Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo, or X (formerly Twitter) links. This blog creator requires no registration. Enhance student learning and allow pairs or small groups of students to explore Related Activities and share what they learned with their peers using an interactive poster like Marq (formerly Lucidpress), reviewed here. Students can keep their work for future reference in a digital portfolio such as Pathbrite, reviewed here.Understanding Geologic Time - U.C. Berkeley

In the Classroom
This webquest is a GREAT way to teach about geologic time in a way that is very student oriented. Save the site as a favorite on classroom computers, and have students work on it in pairs or cooperative learning groups. This could be used in any Earth Science or Geography class.Getting Into the Fossil Record - U.C. Berkeley
Grades
6 to 12tag(s): fossils (41), geology (62), paleontology (28)
In the Classroom
Pair students in pairs and have them complete the webquest during a unit on archaeology and the fossil record left behind by dinosaurs. As a culminating activity after the webquest, have students create a concept map showing how fossils are formed. Use a tool such as bubbl.us (reviewed here) to create and share the concept maps.Adventures at Dry Creek - U.C. Berkeley
Grades

Use this site as a paired or individual activity while learning about archaeology. The site is a little old and clunky, so teachers will need to preview it on the interactive whiteboard to show students how it works. To speed things along, have students write or type their own journal separately, rather than using the one provided by the site. Try a tool like Google Docs, reviewed here, making it easier to share and turn in after the fact.Butterfly Conservatory - American Museum of Natural History

The lesson plans here are excellent! Choose from many lessons (levels 4-12) to use in class to save you time. All lessons have a summary explaining what you and students will encounter with that lesson. Some example titles are The Ladder of Life where through video and Web-based activities, the students will develop a greater understanding of what DNA does in a cell. Students will be able to assemble DNA parts in order to simulate DNA strands. They will also have the opportunity to experimentally view DNA through an extraction technique included in the lesson. Another is Evolution: Its Effect Throughout Geological Time and the Controversy where students review the basics of Charles Darwin's Theory of Evolution. They use the World Wide Web to explore the various stages of evolution, over geological time, and learn how each organism fits into the evolutionary story. These are just two representatives of how the many lessons are presented.Lost in the Grand Canyon - PBS
