In the Classroom
Beyond the obvious application for comparing treatment of news events around the country and the world, this site could also be used for writing, world language practice, a look at editorial choices, or other social studies applications. Include this resource in a media literacy unit on bias or during Newspapers in Education month. With elementary students, share many newspapers on a projector or interactive whiteboard as students identify the various elements of a newspaper article. The Lesson Plan link above contains and excellent poster link for familiarizing students with the elements that comprise the front page of a newspaper. Download it along with the lesson plan. The poster utilizes a sample front page from The Washington Post to illustrate how a front page is formatted. Have students analyze the sample front page by answering the suggested questions. Once students are familiar with the elements of a newspaper, extend their learning and challenge them to create their own class or school newspaper using Printing Press. If articles are too long for some readers, or if you are teaching summarizing skills consider using Skim.it, a Chrome extension that reduces articles into a 100-word summary.

We could do without the musical introductions, but they don't detract from the quality of this information.

The site blends background information on the lives of literary figures with descriptions of the places they lived and visited, creating a nice context for a study of the factors that influence an author's work. Here's a well organized PDF reading guide by Glencoe. The lessons are grouped in four chapter reading segments, each group of chapters is divided into three parts: Before You Read, Active Reading, and Responding. The guides are well thought out and will prompt students to write, create cluster diagrams, and complete comparison charts for the story's characters, plot, and climax. After completing the novel, students are asked to read five extension assignments in various other forms of literature and relate them to the book's central themes. Teachers will be able to use this guide as a 'turn key' approach to teaching this thoughtful novel.

The Unit includes thought provoking questions on topics relevant to the award winning book by Scott O'Dell and today's students. This unit has a glossary (vocabulary) and questions to guide students for each chapter. After completing the lessons teacher's can use a rubric created for this unit as a final assessment. Teachers will find the lessons are detailed and clearly written. Student's may find the suggested extension activities both interesting and challenging.

The National Park Service presents this massive unit for Island of the Blue Dolphins. See the village, visit the island, and learn about the sea life around the Island of the Blue Dolphins. Students will love this artistic interactive site full of pictures they can click on to visit links that ask questions and give more information. Across the top menu are many resources for teachers and students. There is an "About the Author" with a short biography about Scott O'Dell. Choose to follow the story by chapter or theme. Click the picture for each chapter and scroll to the bottom to find a writing prompt and lesson plan. There are many clickable resources in-between.

If you use literature circles (small reading groups) in your classroom, using a unit like this and allowing the groups to go through the unit at their own pace, or suggesting a jigsaw approach to reviewing a set of chapters is a good way to make this unit "student centered." Learn about the Jigsaw cooperative learning approach at Jigsaw Classroom, reviewed here. Enhance student learning by asking them to make an Infographic using Canva Infographic Maker, reviewed here, about what they learned from the novel; an inforgraphic would be a great conclusion for the lit circle project. Post the infographics on your web page for all your students and their parents to enjoy.

Challenge your students to a discussion using the ideas from Thinkalong, reviewed here. To help students prepare for the discussion, have them write about their opinion(s) for selected questions first. Replace paper and pen and have students create blogs sharing their thoughts and understanding about the book. If you are teaching younger students and looking for an easy way to integrate technology and check for understanding, exchange paper and pen and challenge your students to create a blog using Seesaw, reviewed here. After completing the discussions, challenge older students to choose a question and create a script for the ideas that emerged from the discussion; then strengthen student learning and have them put it into a podcast. Update the lesson plan for these tech savvy students, and have them turn in their presentation via Google Docs, reviewed here, or depending on the age of your students show them how to embed media transforming their learning by making a multimedia presentation using one of the many TeachersFirst Edge Multimedia tools, reviewed here. Some tool suggestions are (click on the tool name to access the review): Infogram, Lucidpress, and Powtoon, instead of the traditional Microsoft PowerPoint. This will save them from having to bring it in on a flash drive, and make it easy to access from anywhere.Make sure to also save the site as a favorite for students on classroom computers, making it easier for them to access it!
