Help students develop personal financial literacy as a real-world connection to your curriculum. At this site, teens take a quiz to find out their background, financial needs, and monthly expenditures. The next page shows users how much money they need to earn to fulfill just their basic needs. The calculator breaks the amount needed to earnings per hour times how many hours per week they'd need to work. It also displays a breakdown of what types of employment would yield the desired amount. Of course, the site also shows that the more educated one is, the better the wages.

Have students navigate the quiz and scenarios on laptops or in a lab-- or even as homework-- as part of you unit on life after high school or career planning. There is more teacher information and an explanation of standards available in the drop-down menus.

This multi-faceted site is simply designed but extremely useful to students and adults of all ages. It does assume that they can read. The purpose of the website is to help individuals solve math problems. The user actually chooses the math topic and enters the specific math problem. The answers provided include a detailed description. There are seven general areas (Math for Everyone, General Math, K-8 Math, Algebra, Plots & Geometry, Trig. & Calculus and Other Stuff). At the "Math for Everyone" page, the topics include calculating a tip, estimating retirement, loans and more! All pages and activities are interactive and individualized for the user.

tag(s): conversions (38), decimals (94), fractions (179), ratios (53)

In the Classroom

Teachers can use this tool to help students of all ages understand difficult mathematical concepts. High school teachers could help students understand "real world math," such as how much a car payment will cost. Teachers could also make these interactive activities a class challenge on an interactive whiteboard or projector.

Include the link on your tecaher web page for parents and support teachers to use together with struggling students who need more practice. Editor's note: This site is free as of Mar, 2007. This may change in the future.

Create photo trading cards using images you upload or store on Flickr, Instagram, or Dropbox. Imagine having your students create study aids about famous people using images they draw and scan, or photos of themselves impersonating famous people, such as presidents, explorers, authors, and more. If you celebrate reading by having an "author's tea," why not follow up by asking students to make trading cards for the authors they "met"? Use a similar approach for famous historical figures or even for geometric shapes you photograph with the digital camera. If students write their own "biographies" of the shapes to study from, they will learn for sure! They can even trade each other for favorites.

tag(s): book reports (26), famous people (40), images (266)

In the Classroom

Upload and tag your photo, type information, and print cards. Download the finished card to your computer. Use for book reports for literature circles, with each student in the group making a card for a different character in the book. This is also an excellent idea for special occasions for special people: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, school nurse, school secretary, school custodian, favorite aunt, or anyone else! Be sure to print onto cover stock and laminate (if possible). What fabulous (and memorable) gifts. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Easily pre-register students to avoid creating logins, view and download their creations, and view the site advertisement-free. You will find information about the Educator Account here.

Flickr allows you to upload and share images online. It is not specifically an educational site, so it may include "inappropriate" content. As a teaching tool, you can upload picture collections and "tag" them with a unique keyword so students can access them for various activities, such as creating sequenced "comic strips," making annotated posters, including photos in blogs, and other electronic projects. This is a great way to make the photos accessible to students. Note: Use the DIRECT URL to the specifically-tagged photos ("photosynthesisproject") or create a collection for each project.

tag(s): images (266), photography (135), Storage (7)

In the Classroom

Create a free account and take a moment during setup to adjust your notification settings so you only receive the emails you want. Upload and organize photos for the projects you plan to use with students so they are easy to access year after year. You can manage privacy settings at any time, making images public when needed and switching them to private when they are no longer in use. Be sure that you are the copyright holder of any images you upload by using original photos you have taken rather than images from the internet. To use the site effectively, you will need basic skills such as taking and saving digital photos, locating and uploading files, tagging images for easy student access, copying and sharing URLs for collections, and adjusting privacy and sharing settings. Find other tools such as Big Huge Labs Captioner or Motivator to use with the photos.
