This website focuses on the Abacus. There are numerous interactive activities, explanations of the Abacus, information about the history of the Abacus, how to calculate math problems using an Abacus, lesson plans and more! The website also shares how the Abacus is used today in other parts of the world.

In the Classroom

Be sure to check out the "Teachers Resources" section of this website. Some of the interactive portions require that you have JAVA enabled on your computer (they tell you this). Try the Java applet on your interactive whiteboard for students to "manipulate" an abacus, if you do not have any.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

This multi-faceted site is simply designed but extremely useful to students and adults of all ages. It does assume that they can read. The purpose of the website is to help individuals solve math problems. The user actually chooses the math topic and enters the specific math problem. The answers provided include a detailed description. There are seven general areas (Math for Everyone, General Math, K-8 Math, Algebra, Plots & Geometry, Trig. & Calculus and Other Stuff). At the "Math for Everyone" page, the topics include calculating a tip, estimating retirement, loans and more! All pages and activities are interactive and individualized for the user.

tag(s): conversions (37), decimals (83), fractions (152), ratios (45)

In the Classroom

Teachers can use this tool to help students of all ages understand difficult mathematical concepts. High school teachers could help students understand "real world math," such as how much a car payment will cost. Teachers could also make these interactive activities a class challenge on an interactive whiteboard or projector.

Include the link on your tecaher web page for parents and support teachers to use together with struggling students who need more practice. Editor's note: This site is free as of Mar, 2007. This may change in the future.

The teacher link will take you to PBS Learning Media which has lesson plans and follow-up activities to reinforce the concepts featured in a particular game. Math strategies are cleverly disguised as sports challenges, invention making, puzzles, mazes etc. Math topics include patterns, deductive reasoning, budgeting, decimals, negative numbers, place value, elapsed time, measurement, operations, probability, geometry, and more. Start from this teacher page to select the game most appropriate for your students.

Create photo trading cards using images you upload or store on Flickr, Instagram, or Dropbox. Imagine having your students create study aides about famous people using images they draw and scan or photos of themselves impersonating the famous people, such as presidents, explorers, authors, and more. If you celebrate reading by having an "author's tea," why not follow up by asking students to make trading cards for the authors they "met"? Use a similar approach for famous historical figures or even for geometric shapes you photograph with the digital camera. If students write their own "biographies" of the shapes to study from, they will learn for sure! They can even trade each other for favorites.

tag(s): book reports (26), famous people (31), images (253)

In the Classroom

Upload and tag your photo, type information, and print cards. Download finished card to your computer. Use for book reports for literature circles with each student in the group making a card for a different character in the book. This is also an excellent idea for special occasions for special people: mom, dad, grandma, grandpa, school nurse, school secretary, school custodian, favorite aunt, or anyone else! Be sure to print onto cover stock and laminate (if possible). What fabulous (and memorable) gifts. Check out the Big Huge Labs educator account. Easily pre-register students to avoid creating logins, view and download their creations, and view the site advertisement free. You will find information about the Educator Account here.

Flickr allows you to upload and share images in an online location. It is not specifically an education site, so it has the drawback of possibly including "inappropriate" content. As a teaching tool, you can upload picture collections and "tag" them with a unique keyword so students can access them for various activities, such as creating sequenced "comic strips," making annotated posters, including photos in blogs, and other electronic projects. This is a great way to make the photos accessible for the students to use. Note: use the DIRECT URL to the specifically-tagged photos ("photosynthesisproject") or create a collection for each project.

tag(s): images (253), photography (126), Storage (6)

In the Classroom

Join the site for free (and make sure you turn OFF all the "send me emails" features). Place photos online for all the projects you expect to do with students. They will remain in place for future years. If you wish to, remove them from "public" viewing when you do not need them. Note: You MUST be the actual copyright holder to upload photos to this site, so use your digital camera, NOT downloaded photos from the web! Skills needed: taking and saving digital pictures, location and upload of photo files, "tagging" them so students can a find them, copying the URL of the tagged group or of the collection, and changing the attributes of your uploaded pictures. Find other tools such as Big Huge Labs Captioner or Motivator to use with the photos.

This very simple site, created by an anonymous puzzle-lover, is a treasury for logic problems and lateral thinking puzzles to use in your classroom or beyond. Click on the puzzle type you want. Use them as brain warm-ups in a math or science class before venturing into problem-solving or inquiry process or simply to engage the brains before starting any activity. There are different levels of logic and different types of lateral thinking puzzles, each with a hint before revealing the complete answer. These puzzles would also be useful for gifted enrichment.
