Do you hope for a lot of presents or presence? Do sentences have a clause or claws? There are two levels of difficulty to choose from which provide examples that might even stump the class wizards.

This is a fun, useful interactive to practice frequently misused words like principal and principle or there and their. Project it on your classroom projector or interactive whiteboard. Students tend to remember homonyms better when they practice them in a fun context rather than repeated drills. Save (or bookmark) this site in your favorites and link it to your class web page for students to access it easily from home or classroom computers. Students follow WordGirl as she battles villains using the power of vocabulary, modeling strong word choice, context clues, and figurative language in every episode. The site offers a wide selection of animated adventures that reinforce listening comprehension and expose learners to rich, academic vocabulary in fun and memorable ways. Teachers can use episodes as a launchpad for lessons on synonyms, prefixes, and suffixes, character development, and other related topics. WordGirl videos are a great way to make literacy learning lively, humorous, and vocabulary-powered.

In the Classroom
After watching a short WordGirl episode, have students identify the villain and the key vocabulary used in the episode. Have them work in small groups to sort the vocabulary into categories such as actions, descriptions, or feelings, then share how the words helped solve the problem. Students can select one challenging word from the episode and create a four-panel comic using Comic Strip Templates by Canva, reviewed here that uses pictures, speech bubbles, and clues to help others figure out the definition. Comics can be displayed as a "Wall of Words" gallery. Assign students to design their own superhero or villain based on a powerful word, such as "The Determinator" or "Captain Curiosity." They should write a character profile, including their powers, weaknesses, theme vocabulary, and a short scene or script where they use their word skills to save the day.

Word Hippo is a word study tool for synonyms, antonyms, and more. Look for rhyming words, opposites, translations to a variety of languages, plurals, definitions and uses for the word, etc. The site also makes suggestions for other words in case you might have made a typo or do not know the spelling. As with any other reference, students should be cautioned to be sure these are accurate definitions needed for the context in which they are studying the words. You will want to spell out consequences and/or supervise to be sure students are not searching for inappropriate words, but the most egregious words of bad taste do not appear to be available for search at this site.

Paste in any passage or the URL for any blog entry or web page (including newspapers online) to create a word cloud of the text. Enhance basic word clouds by using this site to create clouds in various shapes, use mouse rollover options, use font effects, and more. Elevate your word clouds into an art form. Once registered, change your password by clicking the profile tab and entering your new password. Before creating a word cloud, agree to the terms that include only using appropriate content. Copy and paste a series of words or use the URL of a page where the words can be found. Choose a shape such as a heart, cloud, or geometric pattern. Choose a font and other options, then click "Build the Cloud." Preview your cloud before saving. WordArt.com is free for personal and non-commercial use. After creating the word cloud, be sure to save the image (or use a screen capture) to share with others. Choose any title and subscribe. Wordisode delivers a new episode to your email daily until the season ends, typically in 10 days.

In the Classroom
Use Wordisode as a way to hook reluctant readers. The short, 5-minute episodes include cliffhangers to motivate readers to watch for the next piece of the story. Have students create blogs using Telegra.ph, reviewed here, to reflect about their reading and predict events coming in the next Wordisode edition. Telegra.ph will create a "quick and easy" blog to be used one time only. A unique URL is provided, and with Telegra.ph you just click on an icon to upload images from your computer, add a YouTube or Vimeo link. Use this site as an example and have students create their own episodic stories. Going along with that idea, have students create a new "cliffhanger" for the story and start a choose your own adventure story using a tool like Rootbook, reviewed here. They could then create a storyline for their own "cliffhanger," and then type in the original "cliffhanger," and create what they predict the rest of the "original" story will be. You could continue the choose your own adventure week after week until the story is complete. You need to know how to copy/paste text passages (ctrl or command + C, then ctrl or command + V to paste. Think Velcro to stick it there!). If you wish to Save, you must join the site (email required). Alternately, capture the image using screen capture (apple/shift/4 on a Mac or Print Screen on a PC.)Use a word cloud in virtually any class. With emergent readers, enter multiple words with the same consonant cluster or vowel sound, so they can SEE a visual grouping of that sound on your interactive whiteboard and guess the sound. Project a teacher-created word cloud at the start of a new lesson or unit and have students determine what the lesson will be about. Have students use word clouds to proof their own essays or stories. Use word clouds for students to identify the subject and frequently used words to check if they are on target with their intended message. Have students find overused words in their own writing as part of lessons on word choice. Teachers could create and save a word cloud then share it as a visual prompt for students to work individually or in groups to identify words they know (and the definitions) as well as the words they are unfamiliar with. Create word clouds of passages or stories and allow students to guess the author, title, subject, or meaning of the story. Underscore motifs in literature by creating clouds of passages, especially poetry. Have students work together to make clouds of alternative ways to say "said" or "went" in story-writing to post in your classroom as a reference. Create word clouds of opinion passages to determine the bias of the author and possible reasons for that specific opinion. Make word cloud posters on health topics such as the potential health risks of smoking. Make word clouds of different food groups. Create higher order thinking activities by approaching text in a unique way.

The result: an engaging visual prompt that tempts your guess at one of the day's top stories. The news sources vary among various mainstream U.S. news sources, such as the New York Times, NBC, NPR, or USA Today. Challenge yourself to stay up to date and think visually. Cycle back through the daily entries since early 2013 or search by clickable tags to see the breadth of news represented here and find related stories. You can also sign up to receive the daily stories via email.

In the Classroom
Encourage students to connect with current events by sharing the daily post (or one per week) on your projector or interactive whiteboard as students enter homeroom or settle in for the start of class. If you teach reading, this is the perfect way to entice students to READ informational texts with a visual image in mind, adding a purpose to their reading of non-fiction. This is a very creative way to practice close reading, as students look for the reasons behind the illustrator's choices. Extend the activity by challenging students in reading OR social studies classes to create their own Wordless News illustrations to reflect a news story they find on their own. Share the challenges on a class wiki for other students to "guess" and include the links to the stories. Art teachers can use this blog as an example of the many ways artists find inspiration in everyday life. Even the very young can "draw" a news story they read. ESL/ELL teachers can use these illustrations to build speaking vocabulary as students discuss and guess the news stories and practice their language skills reading the actual text. Use this blog in social studies class to inspire historic " wordless news" stories with accompanying articles written by students (or primary source stories from the time). Save time when creating presentations and choosing fonts by using Wordmark.it to preview what your exact words will look like. Simply type/paste in any words, and Wordmark.it scans the fonts on your computers, displaying the words in each and every font style you have. Adjust font size as desired to see changes or change to positive or negative space. This site helps find the perfect font for any use in no time at all! You no longer have to guess whether the capitals will look funny or the specific letters/words might be hard to read. Art teachers can use this to demonstrate design aspects of different fonts. Sign up using email and a password to save words if desired, but this isn't necessary for general use.
