This handy online tool lets you create customized graphic organizers "on the fly" and print them from the web site. There is a paid version of the site, but this FREE tool lets you choose the type of organizer you want, customize the Title and Directions, and print. Organizer types include Venn diagrams, KWL, scientific method, and many more. Learning support teachers will want to use this for students to create study materials.
In the Classroom
Use these printed organizers as study support for any content area topic. Many are excellent options for reinforcing reading skills in the content areas, even for senior high students. Include this on your teacher web page so students can create their own organizers to study for tests or prepare presentations.To make a new organizer, simply click "new," write title and directions, and print the small "print" icon. It may be easiest to take their default directions and change them for your purposes. Note that you LOSE your work when you close the page, so make sure you have printed first!

This is a truly amazing, in-depth site that should satisfy even the most rabid Harry Potter fans! It includes everything from maps to each of the Hogwarts houses to character descriptions to chapter-by-chapter summaries and essays about the books written by experts. Click on "The Wizarding World" and see the complete breakdown of what is covered. Just try to find something that is not!(Avoid the items for sale).

The graphics alone on this site make it worthwhile! Students will be captivated by the artwork. The Wizarding Maps are great for your visual students and in case you're worried about your science-minded kids trying the magic spells or potions, those pages direct students to the pages in the different books where they are referenced. A site to use and get lost in for both you and your students.Invite your students do a "book report" on another author by making a simple "page" of their own using PowerPoint to emulate a portion of this site.

A fairly fast moving webquest, this activity nonetheless provides opportunities to delve into the world of utopias. It also bases the evaluation of the final student project on four subject areas: social studies, language arts, art history and science. An Internet link goes to a cyberguide for the novel.
In the Classroom
If you do not have enough time for an entire webquest, you may still want to do some of the activities or use the links with your class. A webquest is also an excellent independent activity for your more able students or for a gifted class, allowing you time to work in smaller groups with your struggling students. Bring in laptops for the webquest students to work in the room with you, if you have them available. Consider upgrading from paper to digital copies of the work for students to turn in afterward. BBC offers the news with vocabulary support, exercises, video and audio features with related testing, a serial story with viewer input, a special grammar and vocabulary section, and features just for students (Learner of the Day, a learning English blog, emailed newsletter, and message board.) This is a comprehensive site well worth your time. American speakers will find some "different" vocabulary, but this simply enriches the site.

Dates That Matter provides a new perspective on history by placing each day-in-history event in a broader context and explaining its long-term impact. History is a fabric woven of many events, and Dates That Matter helps students see the full tapestry. Each entry opens with a date and a single intriguing sentence about the event. A set of guiding questions then appears one at a time -- click Reveal to uncover each answer and surface the next question. When all questions have been explored, the full historical event is named, and a Why It Matters explanation fills in the remaining context and offers curated links to learn more. Teachers who work with struggling or reluctant readers may find these daily entries a natural way to practice the reading strategy of connecting new information to prior knowledge. You can also preview upcoming dates to select entries that align with your current unit -- but be aware that the preview page shows the answers, so keep it for your planning only.

Use this fabulous website to check readability levels on web sites before you assign them to your students or include them in a webquest. Open TWO windows on the internet: one for possible web sites and one with this tool, ready to go. Simply copy and paste the URL (web address)from the address bar when you are looking at the web page you want students to use. Paste it into the space on this site and click "Calculate Readability." Juicy Studio will give you a Gunning Fog Index score and a Flesch-Kincaid Grade level for the web page you provided. Be sure to read the explanations of what these scores mean! Note: This tool does not check an entire SITE, just the actual page you were looking at when you copied the URL. To be sure your students can read the entire site, select a page that is text-intense as the one you "test." As in any content reading book, illustrations, captions, and other graphics will help your students "read" any page, but sometimes they just need to be able to read the words!

Allow groups of students to create card sets for the class to study for tests (using your free account). With just one classroom computer, you can allow students to take turns practicing with the card set. Have a contest or rotate the chance to make the study cards for each quiz or test. This will build study skills for all. If you haev access to an interactive whiteboard, have students do a review session using your student-made or another premade card set on the board.

By registering with an email address, you and your students are able to create their own newspaper with a choice of three options, a simple page layout, one with frames, or one with two windows which requires Java Script. Creators can also add images and/or links to images and other info. After selecting either "standard" (displays newspaper sections one at a time) or "quick paper" (shows all sections and selects the most popular items for the final paper), students can click to read their personalized news. Options allow students to hear the news also, using RealAudio. They can select news from local, national, or international papers. Instructions on the site are excellent and preparing the personalized newspaper just takes a few moments. Participants receive a link to their newspapers in an email message sent only to them. remember that the audio requires Real Player. Get it from the TeachersFirst Toolbox page.

Check on your district policy regarding posting student work to the web. It would be a good idea to limit names to initials and to get written parent permission before setting up accounts.
