Students will love learning about simple machines by building catapults to launch candy pumpkins. Then, using just a few supplies, challenge students to see whose pumpkins fly the farthest. Along the way, students also explore other scientific questions that examine the impact of size and weight and consider the effect by using different types of supplies. This article includes complete directions along with images for incorporating the pumpkin catapult into early childhood classrooms. Of course, be sure to use caution and discuss safety rules when hurtling items at any time. If possible, take this activity outdoors to allow more space for launching the catapults.

In the Classroom
Although this lesson describes activities for pre-k classrooms, the challenge is suitable for adaptation to any elementary class. Try the challenge with other small items at any time. For example, during the winter holidays, use snowman erasers or during spring, try catapulting different sizes of pompoms to see how far they fly. Adapt this activity for older students by providing the supplies at a learning center or makerspace area without directions. Allow students to explore options on their own to build and create a catapult. Use a digital organizational tool such as IdeaBoardz, reviewed here, to record and share students' observations. Extend student learning by creating ebooks using Book Creator, reviewed here, that include images of students' creations, text of their observations, and audio explanations of the STEM learning. For younger students, create a class book together. Take advantage of the many free primary source Strategy Guides available at Read Write Think, reviewed here, for teaching with primary sources. For example, search for the Inquiry Charts (I-Guide) Strategy Guide to download and use the printout that helps students focus on the content of any primary source. Create an inquiry chart using Google Slides, reviewed here, or Jamboard, reviewed here, for students to complete as a group. Enhance learning through the use of a video add-on tool such as edpuzzle, reviewed here. edpuzzle offers options to add comments and questions into videos to help students focus on important concepts. Extend learning by asking students to share their understanding of Native Americans using a variety of online tools. For example, ask students to use Google My Maps, reviewed here, to create maps sharing information of different tribes found around the United States. The If/Then Collection is a free resource for finding and sharing images and videos of women related to STEM topics. Search the collection by media type, discipline, location, or ambassador name. Another option is to browse through the featured categories found on the home page, including topics such as sports, explorers, and hero videos. Then, share items by selecting the share icon located on each thumbnail image. The required prompt asks you to complete a short form before sharing. The form includes the user's email, the purpose for using the content, and the checkbox agreeing to proper use. Although items on the site are available for free use without crediting the photographer or videographer, proper credit is always encouraged when possible.

Have students create polls for after a project presentation. How well can you guess the name of a city based on audio and street scenes within a video? Play City Guesser as an individual or in a multi-player scenario to see how well you know your geography. Start by selecting from different world areas, or try your hand anywhere in the world as your starting point. When you think you know where it is, click the link to start guessing. Drop a pin on the map's location of your guess, then click to see how close you are! Once you become a pro, try the advanced challenges that test your radius streak and ability to find locations without audio clues or within a predetermined time limit. Compete with friends using the multi-player option to create a private room, join a random room (not recommended), or use a code provided by a friend.
In the Classroom
City Guesser is an excellent resource to use together as a class on your whiteboard, at computer centers, or as a quick learning activity to teach students about using visual cues and critical thinking skills. Before placing a guess, ask students to share the clues they saw in the video that led to their suggestion. Use City Guesser as an ongoing estimation activity in math class. Create a chart to show the average distance between guesses and actual locations, then challenge students to become more accurate with their guesses. As students discover interesting places, encourage them to research and learn more about the location. Vmaker is an all-in-one screen recorder, video recorder, webcam recorder, and video editor. Use Vmaker to create, edit and schedule recordings without time limits or watermarks. Create a free account to record videos for free. Download Vmaker to your computer or install it as a browser extension following the directions upon signup. Once the extension or download is complete, access the included features to choose settings and begin recording. When finished, your video is available to edit or share. When ready to share, download the video to your device, copy the link for your video, or share by email.

In the Classroom
Use this handy screen recording tool in a variety of ways in your classroom. Record tutorials for students to demonstrate how to access and use online sites; create recordings for substitutes to explain how to find and use the software on your computer, or make a how-to demo to find information on your class website to share with students and parents. EDUimages provides a library of photos taken from seven urban schools that primarily serve multicultural students and low-income families representing modern classrooms. Images cover all grade levels from PreK through high school. Search the site by keyword, or browse through the collections divided into grade levels, subject area, and more. Download using the links provided; included with each image is all copyright information. The photos are free and licensed under Creative Commons attribution and require appropriate attribution.

In the Classroom
Bookmark this site for professional use and share it with students whenever using images for class projects and assignments. Be sure to discuss how to use and attribute images within their work properly. Use these images on your class web page, in newsletters, or in slide presentations. Many of the images also work well for use with creative writing projects. For example, display one of the interesting images on your whiteboard or share it with students in their learning space to use as a writing prompt. Circlyapp is a platform for organizing and sharing information visually using brightly colored circles as an organizing tool. Work as an individual or invite others into collaborative projects and discussions using Circlyapp. Register for an account using your email to begin a blank project or choose from shared templates. The shared templates include ideas for book reviews, character maps, and a drag-and-drop opposite adjectives game. After creating a project, use the link to share with collaborators. Free accounts allow you to save up to 30 projects and download completed activities as an image.

In the Classroom
Share Circlyapp on your whiteboard or screen when remote teaching as a visual tool for organizing and discussing any topic. For example, use the character map template as a starting point for discussions of actions and character traits of essential characters in any story or to analyze noteworthy people in history. Have older students complete character maps on their own as an assessment activity. Share with students who are working on group projects as an organizational tool for managing different project components. Ask students to include a completed Circlyapp image as part of a larger project or book report. Use and finish the book review template as a starting point for a book review project, then include the image with other parts of the assignment within a Sway presentation, reviewed here. Take advantage of the included opposite adjectives game template to create drag and drop matching activities for any topic.
