Imagine conversing with George Washington, Sigmund Freud, Thomas Edison, or any other historical character. Character.AI provides the tools to engage in fictional chats with any character or group of characters, real or made-up. Search for the name of a character, and a chat window opens with a conversation starter. Use the arrows in each character response to view additional options. Registration isn't required to create conversations but is necessary to save conversations.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (136), chat (41)

In the Classroom

Always tell students that these chats are made up, not conversations. Use Character.AI in many ways to encourage student discussion and critical thinking activities. For example, choose Thomas Jefferson as a character and ask questions about his thoughts on today's Federalist Society. Scroll through the different responses provided and ask students to select one of the responses to research further. As another option, ask for responses from several characters, such as James Madison and Benjamin Franklin, and then compare them. Use Padlet, reviewed here to share resources and information for students to use when conducting their research. Include links to primary source documents, videos, and articles. Extend learning by asking students to create multimedia presentations using Canva Edu, reviewed here to share their findings. Check out the Books section to see if there is an author or character your students are interested in.

Anytime students use images, discuss the proper use of copyright. Currently, copyright laws do not apply to AI-generated images; include this in your discussion and consider why this might be true. Create images to use as starters for creative writing projects, to include in multimedia projects, or for students to use as avatars for blogs. Use images created with Clipdrop in digital storytelling projects, such as those created with Canva Edu, reviewed here or with Canva Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here. In art class, use one doodle to create images in different art styles and ask students to compare the different features of each style. Ask students to choose one art style to use in creating drawings by choosing from different options of media and supplies.

gotFeedback uses artificial intelligence (AI) features to provide clear and actionable feedback for student writing. After making your free account, describe the type of feedback requested, such as details, a clear thesis statement, or the use of specific claims to support information. Next, upload the writing to be analyzed or copy and paste the text into the designated area. After submitting your writing sample, gotFeedback provides you with feedback, including suggestions for improvement and a sample revision.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (136), assessment (149), feedback (9), writing (318)

In the Classroom

Use gotFeedback to provide quick assessments of students' writing and to focus on specific ways to improve their work. Use the Prompt Guide on gotFeedback to understand how to provide clear and actionable feedback to support students. If desired, share the revised writing example with students to use as a model for editing their work, or share the feedback and ask them to change based on that information. Use Google Docs or Microsoft Word for students to track and share writing revisions. For example, ask students to begin writing projects in Google Docs. After sharing their work, use gotFeedback to analyze the work based on your criteria, then share the feedback portion with the student. Ask the student to highlight areas that need improvement, then use that information as a starting point to revise the text below the original text. When finished, ask the student to write a short reflective piece on methods to improve his writing. Using this method allows you to view each writing process step as a reflective activity.

Use ChatGPT to increase your productivity and as a resource for finding classroom resources. For example, use the chat to find activities accompanying your current book study. An example question might be, "What are some activities to add to our study of Charlotte's Web in third grade?" Use a clarifying question to select one of the provided activities and ask for free online resources that support the provided response. This example includes several clarifying questions that provide additional ideas for books and activities to accompany Charlotte's. Ask ChatGPT to differentiate activities for students who need extra support or for those that need enrichment activities. Another use for ChatGPT is to write Student of the Week paragraphs; ask ChatGPT to write a paragraph including the student's name and accomplishments and revise the section to fit your needs.

Speakable is an application that uses artificial intelligence (AI) technology to analyze a person's speech and provide real-time feedback to improve their pronunciation and overall speaking ability. Choose from many different languages to set as the course language and the speaker's native language. Teachers may create a free account using Google, Clever, or an email account. Allowing microphone access to the site from your browser is required.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (136), Formative Assessment (71), speech (68), vocabulary (237), vocabulary development (87)

In the Classroom

Teachers can use Speakable to support students with speech difficulties, English language learners, or world language students. Create assignments from the lesson library or create your own vocabulary lists. Speakable analyzes the person's speech and provides instant feedback, making this an excellent resource for distance learning or independent practice. Creating activities can help you teach new vocabulary, grammar, sentence structure, and language pronunciation. In addition, instructors can easily embed assignments into other learning sites such as Formative or Google Classroom.

Because this resource is so easy to use and works right within your browser, it makes it a perfect choice for many different classroom uses. For example, use the simple meme generator with a historical figure to introduce a new social studies unit with humor. Edit images to include on your classroom website to add text and stickers and crop out unwanted portions. Use this tool anytime photos need to be edited for class blogs, wikis, or presentation tools. In primary grades, this tool could be helpful for teachers to use to edit pictures from field trips, science experiments, and more. Share the editing process with younger students using an interactive whiteboard or projector. Edit together! Encourage older students to use this tool on images for projects or presentations. Use this tool in photography or art classes. Use the editor to edit pictures to fit styles of paintings when doing historical reports or to set a mood. Use text options for the photos themselves to tell the stories. Have students annotate or label Creative Commons online images of cells, structures of an animal, and much more.
