In the Classroom
Introduce PhET simulations during a math station rotation or as a flipped learning module. For a flipped lesson, assign students a specific simulation, such as Area Model Multiplication, to explore at home, allowing them to build conceptual familiarity before entering the classroom. During in-class station rotations, set up a "Discovery Lab" where students use the simulations to test hypotheses and solve challenges. Once they master a concept, have them use Awesome Screenshot, reviewed here to record a short video explaining their mathematical reasoning as they manipulate the tools. These recordings serve as a powerful formative assessment, showing exactly how a student arrived at an answer. To further extend the activity, have students post their videos or screenshots to a shared Padlet, reviewed here as a gallery walk. After watching a video on SAT or ACT math traps, students can work in small groups to create their own "trap" multiple-choice questions with misleading answers. Groups exchange questions and explain how to spot and avoid the trap. Assign students different Aktaned videos to watch independently. Each student then teaches their topic to a small group using a whiteboard or slide deck made with Google Slides reviewed here or Canva Edu reviewed here. Set up stations with practice problems featured in the Aktaned videos. Challenge students to explore a PhET simulation related to a current science topic, such as circuits, gravity, or states of matter. They can make predictions before interacting with the simulation and record their observations to compare with their initial ideas. Give students a scavenger hunt worksheet with specific challenges to complete in a simulation (ex., "Find a way to make a circuit light up" in the Circuit Construction Kit). Students design a virtual experiment using a PhET simulation. They choose a variable to change, make a hypothesis, run multiple trials, and record their results in a data table or graph before sharing their findings. After watching a video on a literary topic or a story, have students create their own short stories or scripts incorporating themes, characters, or settings from the video. For example, provide remediation to high school students by sharing the 9th or 10th-grade literature and composition courses as a review activity or enhance your British Literature unit by assigning a module that focuses specifically on 17th, 18th, or 19th-century British literature. Consider assigning different activities to groups of students to present to their peers. Include Expii with your links for students to use at home and in class. Expii is an excellent way to provide content explanation through the voice of many different speakers, allowing the opportunity to increase student understanding. To enhance learning, ask groups of students to view lessons provided by the different contributors, then ask them to compare and contrast information by creating a concept map or Venn Diagram using Canva, reviewed here. At the end of a teaching unit, ask students to redefine what they learned using a multimedia tool like Adobe Creative Cloud Express for Education, reviewed here, or Sway, reviewed here, to share their learning.
