This site, created by Australian Sean Banville, offers high-interest, "easier" news for students to read and many teaching materials to go with it. Though the site's look is cluttered with advertising and plain text, the content is worthwhile. Developed for ESL/ELL students and teachers, the site would also work well in a subject-area, learning-support, or reading classroom. There are MANY articles "ready to go," including mp3 audio files for listening. At the time of this review, there were 200+ new additions! Each article includes several activities, such as "online gap fill" (a Cloze reading activity), vocabulary flashcards, Hangman, and matching. A complete script is available as a PDF. There is also an online, interactive quiz for students. The articles and a lot more activities can be downloaded and printed, too.

In the Classroom

The articles are short and interesting, a perfect match for non-fiction reading comprehension. With so many different activities to choose from, it will be easy for the classroom teacher to differentiate. There is an mp3 audio version of each article so students can listen as they read. Assign small groups of students to present the news each week, using the interactive whiteboard to show others the country and city from which the article originated. Make the newscasting experience even more real by having students read scripts of these news stories or their own original stories using a EasyPrompter, reviewed here. Students can then go to another news source such as News for Kids, reviewed here, to see what else is happening in the news. For a project and to enhance student learning, have the small groups create a "talking map" using a site such as Zeemaps, reviewed here. This site allows students to create audio recordings AND choose a location (where their article/story took place). What a fabulous way to share the article with the rest of the class!

Figuring out the TRUE cost of college is tricky. One college may appear to be out of financial range, but once financial aid is applied, the same college may actually require fewer out-of-pocket dollars for a prospective student and family. Comparing the true cost of one college to another has been even trickier when college describe their costs and financial aid awards using different terminology. Since 2011, colleges have been required to include standardized college cost calculators on their websites. This site is working toward a centralized utility that would permit students to aggregate this information and do a meaningful cost comparison. At this point, the site is in its earliest stages, and families are asked to take it for a test drive and provide feedback so the site can continue to improve. During the test drive, however, families will surely discover information that will help them in the short run as they evaluate college costs and financial aid award packages.

tag(s): college (37), financial literacy (91)

In the Classroom

Teachers who work with high school students, regardless of their curriculum specialties, would do their students a great service by recommending this site and similar sites that offer concrete financial data on the actual cost of attending college. If you teach in a field that touches personal financial planning or consumer awareness, asking students to give this site a try would make a great class, group, or individual project.

The cost of college continues to rise, and student debt has a significant impact on the US economy. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau offers several important resources for those thinking about how to pay for college. An overview of student loans and how they work provides important consumer information. Also, some brief money management and banking can help those just starting out. The best part of Paying for College, however, is the financial aid offer comparison tool, which allows you to evaluate up to three financial aid offers from colleges using real "apples to apples" data. Finally, there is excellent advice about repaying student debt.

tag(s): banks (7), college (37), financial aid (9), financial literacy (91), money (112)

In the Classroom

The cost of college represents a real life example of the importance of financial literacy to high school students. If you teach money management, career planning, or consumer awareness, the units on student banking and student loans provide practical advice on financial management and planning for young people. Of course, this is also a resource you will want to share in the library/media center and college guidance offices.

Try this excellent tool for teaching budgeting, comparing salaries and the cost of living across different areas, and money management. Enter two locations and a salary and occupation. The graphs show the differences in the costs of groceries, housing, utilities, transportation, and health care between the two places. A comparison shows how much salary you would need to maintain the present standard of living in the other location. You can also compare the cost of living with that of other major cities.

tag(s): careers (186), money (112)

Use this tool to determine how far a dollar goes in various locations. Allow students the opportunity to play with a standard salary and occupation to examine differences in the cost of living. Report on trends for cities in different areas of the country. Create a list locally of the various items that would be found in each category and the salary for that occupation where you live. Create a budget that allows for savings, vacations, or large purchases. Use the data for practice with graphing and creating infographics. In government classes, use this tool and census data to formulate hypotheses or draw conclusions about patterns of population movement and economic trends across various areas of the country, especially in relation to political trends and election data.

This site has a multitude of financial calculators such as car payment calculators, credit and/or debt calculators, and mortgage calculators. There are also planning tools to use for general budgeting, paycheck planning, and even retirement. It is part of the PA state credit union members site; however it is completely free of charge. There are a few links to apply for a loan through the credit union but they are not obtrusive.

tag(s): calculators (39)

This would be useful for real world projects such as planning a new business, purchasing a car, planning retirement (what happens if they start to save $50 per month at age 14), or buying a home. Share this site on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Then have students choose a real-life scenario either alone, with a partner, or in cooperative learning groups. Some examples of real-life scenarios could be buying a car and calculating payments, buying your first home, using a credit card and how much you are REALLY spending, planning for retirement, or general savings (for a vacation, perhaps). The site has unlimited potential for interdisciplinary use like land management planning (loaning money) or family consumer budgeting projects. Once the calculations are completed have students share their findings by creating an online poster using a tool such as Web Poster Wizard. Share this link on your class web page or wiki as students begin real-world projects and real-life experiences.

Use this site as a resource for finding printables and other items for classroom use. Create your own pinboards for organizing classroom resources found on the web. Create pinboards for students to view and/or add to as a whole class activity, such as "things that use energy," food groups, or groups of items for primary level vocabulary/practice (clothing items, farm animals, clock faces for telling time, etc.). Maybe even create "which one does not belong?" pinboards for PreK and early grades to view and change on an interactive whiteboard and repeat at home. In higher grades, make pinboards for different subjects or units where you collect videos, images, classroom blogs and websites, etc. Share your pinboards with students and parents by putting the link on your class website. Challenge your older students to create their own pinboards as a research project. Use Pinterest to show their hobbies/passions, wise quotes, recipes that fit a specific theme, art/lyrics, or a travel Itinerary. Follow other teachers using Pinterest to see items that they are adding and using in their classrooms. Add TeachersFirst to your pinboards! Note: Take a screenshot of something you find to upload to Pinterest!

Budget and plan for prom with 10 easy questions using this "prom planning" site. It's never too early to start saving! Begin with information on how long there is until prom, money you will have, and more. Include projected expenses for a dress, transportation, tickets, food, and more. When complete, the planner will let you know if you are on track to have enough money for your dream prom!

In the Classroom

Use this site as a fun way to explore budgets and financial planning with teens. Allow students to create different scenarios to find a practical approach to budget planning. Use as part of a debate for students to discuss their opinions on the amount to spend on prom expenses. This is a great lesson to do around prom season as part of a math class or consumerism unit. You could also use it with younger students planning for prom a year or more from now! Even though middle schoolers don't have prom, some of them would LOVE dreaming about it.
