Find high interest, leveled news articles (and lessons) for English language learners. Although this site was designed for ENL/ESL it could be very useful in any elementary classroom looking for informational texts that can be differentiated for various reading levels (great for meeting Common Core standards). This tool could be used with any readers to increase comprehension, fluency, and vocabulary skills. There are three difficulty levels. Complete a reading test by selecting the Test tab on the far right of the top menu bar and find out what level will be best for you. Many of the lessons include audio and practice exercises. In addition, interesting pictures pique the students' interest. The same story is presented in all of the various levels. The vocabulary at lower levels repeats at the higher levels with more vocabulary added as the level increases. Definitions for the vocabulary words, below the reading, assists with English meanings. The audio is hosted on YouTube. At the time of this review, most of the news story content was fine for all ages. However, please preview the story before you share it with your class to be certain it is appropriate.

Add this website to your classroom computers, websites, and newsletters for parents of ENL/ESL students or beginning readers. This tool is especially helpful at the beginning of the year, as you are learning students' reading levels. Use this tool to differentiate in all primary classes. Although this site was created for English Language Learners, it could still be used by all students including gifted and learning support. Differentiate for your advanced/gifted students in elementary, while meeting Common Core standards of Informational Text. Use these news articles as informational text meeting your Common Core goals. Assign students of different levels the same story at the appropriate level or build skills by sharing the same story as a class. Challenge groups to compare the stories in pairs. Have students create a visual presentation of the story. First have students create a rough draft of their comic using Canva Comic Strip Templates, reviewed here. Complete with copies of historic documents detailing court testimony, timelines, family trees, and paintings of the participants, this site is fascinating for those with an interest in the New England witchcraft frenzy of the 17th century. It tells the story of Mary Parsons and her family and their differences with neighbors that dissolved into slander and witchcraft accusations. This site is well-developed and laid out, divided into the story, the participants, the slander and witchcraft trials, and maps showing where the participants came from in England and settled in America. The reality of the story and the depth of information lend a reality to the story that better known stories might lack. Clicking on links will show photographs of the participants, such as William Pynchon and written records of the trials.

Depending on the level of student you teach, this site could be divided into parts for investigation and group teaching, having students use an interactive whiteboard to work through each part. Research could be expanded into further historical study of those involved. As a class project, after or while studying The Crucible, this could be a great comparison of a real situation outside of (and before) the Salem Witch trials. WordSift helps anyone easily sift through texts -- just copy and paste any text into WordSift and you can engage in a verbal quick-capture! The program helps quickly identify important words in the text. After entering text, several items will appear; first, a word cloud will display the 50 most frequently used words in the text. The most frequently used word will display as a word web in a visual thesaurus. Google image and video search results are also shown. One interesting feature is the ability to click on any word in the word cloud to display it in the thesaurus and in Google image and video searches. A great way to understand the WordSift tool is to try one of the sample texts offered, such as Martin Luther King's "I Have a Dream" speech. Be sure to check out the "About" link to discover many ideas for use in the classroom. Tips and videos are also available as guides. If you type in a shorter sentence, the site still creates a word cloud using its own related words (not in your original text). Be aware of the advertisements that appear with the word clouds. Advise students not to click on the ads.

This is a classic tool to promote "before reading" strategies and vocabulary development. Use WordSift to preview text to be used in class and define vocabulary before reading to increase reading comprehension. Have students use WordSift with different portions of text to identify key words and vocabulary for class presentations. Use WordSift to discuss different meanings of words using images presented through the site. This site isn't only for English teachers, share with Science and Social Studies teachers to use in their classrooms with reading texts in their content areas. ENL/ELL and learning support teachers will want to share this as a support for any reading assigned in regular classes. Be sure to show students how to copy/paste to WordSift texts from informational web pages and news stories on the web, as well. Word Hippo is a word study tool for synonyms, antonyms, and more. Look for rhyming words, opposites, translations to a variety of languages, plurals, definitions and uses for the word, etc. The site also makes suggestions for other words in case you might have made a typo or do not know the spelling. As with any other reference, students should be cautioned to be sure these are accurate definitions needed for the context in which they are studying the words. You will want to spell out consequences and/or supervise to be sure students are not searching for inappropriate words, but the most egregious words of bad taste do not appear to be available for search at this site.

In the Classroom
Use this site for vocabulary development and word study assignments, such as writing sentences, paragraphs, or essays using new words. Since the site permits translation, this would be a valuable tool in world language classes, ENL/ELL classes, and more. Introduce this site on an interactive whiteboard and elicit examples to show the class how quickly it works. Have students create their own word walls with synonyms, antonyms, sentences, and more for their latest vocabulary words. Try a tool such as Padlet, reviewed here, for each student to create an online "wall" with words aligned to color coded stickies for synonyms. antonyms, etc. Alternatively, have students create class challenges for their peers with color coded matching activities for the interactive whiteboard matching words to synonyms, antonyms, and an appropriate fill in the blank sentence. Share this as a favorite on your teacher public page for handy reference any time students encounter an unknown word. While on its surface this may seem a humorous site, it is a seriously needed one! For those interested in preserving the English language and its subtle distinctions, this site (created in the United Kingdom) gives students practical example of how misusing apostrophes hinders real communication. The Examples pages offer a variety of pictures of actual signs, cards, and even gravestones with missing or misplaced apostrophes. This site should only be used with supervision since one of its main links is to a message board. The More Problems link only talks about less vs. fewer, so that has limited use.

Because of the message board, this site is best used within the class. Some of the sign examples are hilarious and might spur students to find their own signs and published work that is missing apostrophes (or has misplaced ones). Why not share this site on an interactive whiteboard or projector. You might even create a bulletin board or wiki with apostrophe errors students can find in your own community. Expose your students to different levels of the learning spiral by challenging them to use problem-solving skills for increasingly difficult obstacles. Students can work in small groups to foster cooperation and teamwork as they sort, graph, follow and give directions, and discuss ideas. Of course you will need some LEGOs, so you might try raiding your own children's toy boxes, include a request in your classroom newsletter for donations, look around for LEGO kits collecting dust on classroom shelves, or put it on your school's PTA wish list. This website examines Longfellow's life and work, his homes, and his family. It includes a searchable database of his poems, lesson plans for teachers, a filmography, and more. This site is divided into 7 areas: biography, his poems, works, home, family, resources for teachers, and other resources. The lesson plans in the teacher resource section are pretty good, broken down into curriculum blocks. There are 21 lessons written for across-the-curriculum study in creative and solid ways. They are each geared to specific grade spans (clear in the lesson)that include not only English and literature, but composition, American history, humanities, art, fine arts, language arts, and interdisciplinary studies. A great smorgasbord for a teacher who works with early American authors!

Symbaloo, reviewed here, has taken its popular bookmarking tool and enhanced features to provide a platform for creating virtual interactive lesson plans and learning paths. Log in to your Symbaloo account and browse the Marketplace for lessons already created, or begin creating your own. Add websites, PDFs, videos, and more onto tiles and create a game board and learning path. After adding items to your webmix, choose Edit Webmix, then "Create a learning path." The final step is to click the tiles in the order you want for your learning path, then share the link using the options available in Symbaloo. Symbaloo Lesson Plans & Learning Paths also provides analytics after lessons are assigned to view student progress and a calendar option to make lessons available during a chosen time frame.

In the Classroom
You will want to use Symbaloo Learning Paths for a variety of classroom instruction! Create lesson plans to differentiate learning and assign based on student needs and interests. Embed a lesson on your class website for students to complete at home. Using this site lets you create a clear, concise learning path for any lesson. Share it on an interactive whiteboard with students as you follow through any learning path. Be sure to also include a link to the lesson on your class website for students to use throughout the unit and for review. Use Symbaloo Lesson Plans to enrich independent learning for advanced students or to remediate students needing additional help. This site is perfect for use with multilingual students - include links to resources in their native language and activities, or add tools for practicing English. Put this link on your class website for those ambitious ESL/ELL students desirous of more practice. Set up a point system for students to earn individual credit for their work.
