As digital media increasingly replaces traditional media, students must have the skills to think critically about these new types of texts. Media literacy - the ability to skillfully read and write in a wide range of message forms - allows students to identify themes and issues emerging from popular culture and has related standards that have been incorporated across content areas and grade levels nationwide. Join us to learn more about this information age survival skill. As a result of this session, teachers will: 1. Understand the importance of teaching media literacy in the classroom; 2. Explore media literacy resources; and 3. Learn to use the five key questions of media literacy when planning lessons. This session is appropriate for teachers at all technology levels.

Wordtune is a fabulous Chrome extension and Microsoft Word add-on that takes your writing and provides options for rephrasing and clarifying the information to make it more concise and engaging. The free plan offers up to twenty rewrites per day; each rewrite includes up to 280 characters. The Chrome extension works with Google Docs, Twitter, Outlook, Facebook, and other websites. After installing the extension, open any included site or document, highlight an area of text up to 280 characters, and select the Wordtune icon. Using AI technology, Wordtune generates a list of possible alternatives to your current writing. Select your preferred option to replace your work. See how it works on the Wordtune homepage before installing the extension.

After creating an account, the first step is designing or choosing lessons from SchoolStack's library. Lesson options include adding exit tickets or making tasks optional or required. Next, add assignments to a "stack," like creating a choice board of activities. Then, assign stacks to a whole class, groups, or individuals. Dashboards for students, teachers, and caregivers track students' progress throughout their lessons. Most lessons use Google tools, including Google Docs, reviewed here, Google Slides, reviewed here, and Google Jamboard, reviewed here. Begin your search by exploring the basic templates featured based on different lesson models, or use the keyword search bar to find specific topics. Next, filter down results by grade level, lesson subject, and focus area. Be sure to click the "apply filters" box after making your choices. Each hyperdoc includes a preview for viewing the document; choose the link to "make a copy" to copy and personalize as desired. Although registration isn't required to access and copy the hyperdocs provided on the site, creating an account offers you the opportunity to receive notification of the latest additions to the site.

Student knowledge construction is what happens when students go beyond just reproducing what they have learned, but generate their own ideas and demonstrate understanding of what makes the information unique. The skills of knowledge construction range from inferring to analysis to interpretation to synthesis and evaluation. Many of these skills may also be considered "critical thinking." While teaching these skills can be a challenge, finding useful web resources can be simple.
