This video from Mashup Math shows students how to use real-world data to find probability. A soda company uses six different symbols on bottle caps, and a table shows how often each symbol appears on 50 bottles. Students learn to calculate the probability that the next bottle will have either a green heart or a purple star by adding the occurrences of those two symbols, which appear 15 and 5 times. Together, they occur 20 out of 50 times, and the video demonstrates how to simplify that fraction to 2/5. The lesson reinforces how to use data, identify desired outcomes, and express probability clearly. If your district blocks YouTube, then the video may not be viewable.

Set up stations with "function machines" where students input numbers and determine the output based on a hidden rule. After solving several examples, have students write the rule in algebraic form and compare it with classmates.
