Google's Teachable Machine is an experimental AI tool that allows users to create simple machine learning models without needing coding experience. Using images, sounds, or body poses, students and teachers can train models to recognize, classify, and sort information through hands-on experimentation. The site includes tutorials and sample projects that demonstrate how AI can identify objects, recognize sounds, or respond to movement and gestures. Teachable Machine also provides classroom-ready lessons and activities for K-12 students that explore topics such as artificial intelligence, ethics, creativity, and computer science concepts. To begin, users select a project type, gather and train sample data, test the model, and then save or share their finished project via links or platform-supported export options.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (342), game based learning (319), gamification (89)

In the Classroom

Share Teachable Machines with students who enjoy working with computers and ask them to develop models for different learning activities. For example, ask students to use the image model to create examples of categories of animals for young students and provide them with a picture bank of animals. Use the picture bank to see if animals are categorized correctly as a learning activity. For older students, use this site to build learning games. Find more ideas at Github's Awesome Teachable Machine List, found here.

Udio uses AI to create original music with vocals and instrumentation from text prompts. After creating a free account, users can enter prompts describing the song's topic, genre, mood, style, lyrics, or length. An optional AI prompt-enhancement feature can help generate more detailed and creative results. Once songs are generated, users can remix, extend, edit, and refine their music before downloading or sharing it by URL. Udio also provides options to export audio and create simple music videos. The free plan currently includes a limited number of daily and monthly credits for song generation, while paid plans unlock additional features and higher usage limits.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (342), lyrics (16), songs (52)

In the Classroom

Use this song generator to engage students in any subject. For example, ask Udio to create lyrics and music to coincide with upcoming holidays and classroom events. Try asking Udio to make an upbeat song about your field trip to the zoo or a jazz song that includes information about New Orleans, and play the song for students as a schema activator for your lesson. Create songs with specific vocabulary terms for students to use as a learning aid or produce songs that assist multilingual learners in learning English. App smash Udio with MagicSchool's Song Generator, reviewed here by asking MagicSchool to create a song using any topic and details, then copy the lyrics into Udio to turn the lyrics into any genre desired. Ask students to use Udio to make a song that accompanies a research project or multimedia presentation, then include the song with other presentation elements built into a simple website created with edublogs, reviewed here or another free website builder like Straw Page, reviewed here.

Choosing the best AI chatbot can be daunting. Poe helps by making chat and content generation accessible through various AI-powered tools. Use Poe to interact with popular chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and others in one location. In addition, you can easily interact with custom chatbots or create your own custom chatbot with a simple prompt. Create your free account to begin, then use the settings to set a default bot. Free plans offer 3,000 points daily, which are sufficient for participating in several conversations, creating images, and more.

tag(s): artificial intelligence (342), chat (41), DAT device agnostic tool (133)

In the Classroom

Using AI generators helps save time and increase productivity; Poe saves even more time by making it easy to compare output from several AI generators in one place. Use this resource to create quizzes, rubrics, lesson plans, and more. Many of the included resources offer the option to add files and increase productivity further by attaching a worksheet and asking it to modify the content to differentiate learning or to suggest ideas for presenting the content in a different format. Be sure to ask for information as precisely as possible by including grade-level information, the subject you teach, content standards and teaching objectives, and options for differentiating instruction. Math teachers can ask chatbots to explain the content differently or ask for ideas on applying math topics to everyday life. In social studies or science, ask to generate a vocabulary list or create a story based on your lessons incorporating essential vocabulary terms. ELA teachers might use these tools to get suggestions for interventions to support struggling readers or to find additional resources to support current lessons. Use the image generators to produce images for creative writing activities, to develop descriptive writing skills, or to include in multimedia presentations. Always verify any information provided by any AI tool before using it. These tools constantly evolve, and many features regularly change (or upgrade).

Comments

AI generators like Poe are great for streamlining lesson planning and differentiation, making it easier to adapt content for diverse learners. However, it's crucial to verify AI-generated information for accuracy and alignment with educational goals. Thoughtful prompts and careful oversight ensure these tools enhance instruction rather than replace teacher expertise. Wayland, OR, Grades: 0 - 12

Have fun in your classroom with virtual dice on your interactive whiteboard or projector. Use dice with young students just learning to count. Have students guess what number will "win." Use as an incentive and allow a student to roll the dice to meet a class goal. Set a goal of a large number, and every time a small goal is achieved, roll the dice and keep adding. Keep track until the class achieves the sum given. Practice basic addition, subtraction, multiplication, or division facts. Have team competitions and choose winners by even/odd, the greatest/least sum, greatest/least product, or quotient. Allow students to work in small groups to play the mathematical practice games. For larger digits, roll two dice simultaneously and get the greater number. Do the same to get double or triple-digit numbers. Encourage your students to practice at home and play against their parents. In older grades, study probability and chance. Use the data and create line plots or graphs in various forms using Google Sheets or Microsoft Excel. Be sure to incorporate mean, median, and mode.

In the Classroom

The Cs curriculum is an excellent approach to your subject matter all year. Start with this program and expand on what students have learned through all your units. You don't have to include all 3Cs with every unit. Have students work in pairs or small groups to create a podcast using Pinecast, reviewed here about something they want to know more about in your curriculum. Creating a podcast about something they want to know more about fosters inquiry. Working in small groups encourages communication, and through both, students should begin to feel courage about their research skills and interacting with others.

The Wheel of Names is a popular online tool for random name selection, decision-making, or prize giveaways. It allows you to input a list of names, options, or items into a spinning wheel format. When the wheel is spun, it randomly selects one name or option from the list. This tool is commonly used in classrooms for selecting students for tasks, in virtual meetings for choosing discussion topics, or in games for determining winners. It adds an element of fun and randomness to decision-making processes. The Wheel of Names not only offers mobile and desktop apps for versatile usage but also provides a wealth of resources covering various aspects such as wheel examples and templates, and FAQs, plus troubleshooting tips. These resources ensure you have comprehensive support and guidance to make the most out of the Wheel of Names.

tag(s): classroom management (144), Teacher Utilities (224)

In the Classroom

The Wheel of Names can be a versatile tool for enhancing student engagement and participation while creating a safe and positive classroom setting. One effective use is for random selection, where the wheel can be spun to choose students for tasks, discussions, or presentations, ensuring fairness and transparency without singling out individuals. This transparent randomization helps avoid potential discomfort or anxiety from direct calling out. Another valuable application is in decision-making activities, such as selecting topics for projects or prioritizing ideas generated through collaborative brainstorming. By combining the Wheel of Names with other tech tools like collaborative platforms here, educators can create dynamic learning experiences that promote engagement, fairness, and effective decision-making in the classroom.

Gravity offers a video response tool to promote asynchronous classroom discussions. Use Gravity to record video or audio prompts or create screen recordings to share. Register for an account using your email, then make a community to use as a home for video prompts. Prompts are then created in community folders and shared using a join code. Students join the discussion using the join code and create an account using their email. Free accounts for educators offer unlimited participants and one minute of video recording time.

tag(s): collaboration (137)

In the Classroom

Use Gravity to create collaborative discussions on virtually any classroom topic. Challenge students to reflect on their learning at the end of a unit, research project, or literature circle. Here are just a few example questions to ask: What are some things you did well on this assignment? What mistakes did you make on your last assignment that you did not make on today's assignment? What would you do differently? What would you like to learn more about? Create a community folder for student questions; for example, ask students to create a screen-share video to demonstrate questions they have when solving math problems. Since the free version allows for only a one-minute prompt time and a one-minute reply per student, this is a good tool to teach students to be concise when responding, sharing only the important points.
