RealClearHistory is a history buff's dream. This portion of the RealClear site focuses on history through a variety of different lenses. Begin with the current date in history to access articles from many other global resources relating to events on that date or use the dropdown arrow next to the date to go back a few days in time. Then, scroll further down the page to find multimedia, current news, the latest articles, and much more. If that isn't enough, browse the left sidebar to find history tidbits, biographies and memoirs, documents, and the map room. This site will keep history buffs and students engaged for a very long time!

In the Classroom

Make this site available in favorites on your classroom computers for students to refer to for history-related resources. You may want to list this link on your class website for students to access the page both in and out of class. Consider using the site as an icebreaker at the beginning of a class: pick one of the articles or short video clips (share it on your interactive whiteboard or projector) and discuss. After doing research, have cooperative learning groups create podcasts or video commercials highlighting an interesting historical event. Create FREE podcasts using a site such as Spotify for Podcastors, reviewed here. This is also a good resource for reading informational text per the Common Core Standards.

This interactive resource supports multiple languages, including English, German, Danish, and Dutch, allowing diverse classroom applications. Recess Reset is a social-emotional learning website designed to help students build skills in emotional regulation, mindfulness, and self-awareness through short, engaging animated videos and classroom-ready resources. The site's Free Lessons section is always available to educators at no cost. It includes the first three units of the Recess Reset curriculum, making it an accurate freemium model rather than a free trial. All resources are available in both English and Spanish. No payment information is required; teachers create an account with an email address to access the free materials.

tag(s): behavior (50), classroom management (154), social and emotional learning (221)

In the Classroom

Begin the day with a short Recess Reset video to introduce an emotion or regulation strategy. Students can turn and talk about when they might use that strategy during the school day, helping set a calm and focused tone. Present common classroom or playground situations (losing a game, feeling left out, frustration during work time). Have students role-play applying a Recess Reset strategy to build empathy and problem-solving skills. After viewing a video, have students write or draw about a time they felt the same emotion and which Reset strategy could help them. Older students can include sentence stems or reflection prompts to deepen ELA connections. Students can create a Reset journal using Book Creator, reviewed here or create a class Padlet, reviewed here.

The "Recycle and Repurpose" lesson from Music ConstructED is a hands-on, Earth Day-inspired activity that teaches students about recycling and music. Through the stories Drum City and Ada's Violin, students explore how everyday objects can be transformed into instruments. They will keep a steady beat while identifying found-object instruments in Drum City and learn about Ada Rios, a girl who played a violin made from landfill materials. A YouTube video reinforces the real-world impact of recycling in music. If your district blocks YouTube, then the video may not be viewable.

Take advantage of the hands-on activities shared in this lesson plan to engage students in learning about recycling while integrating studies of South America, Earth Day, and recycling. Find additional ideas for teaching about musical instruments at this TeachersFirst Special Topics Page, found here. Curate and share videos and websites demonstrating additional types of recycled instruments using Padlet, reviewed here, for students to use when gathering ideas for creating recycled instruments. After finishing their instruments, ask students to create and share a video discussion about the instrument using a new Padlet. Have students discuss the recycled materials used to create the instrument and demonstrate how it works in their video.

Looking for a way to keep students learning while celebrating Independence Day? This Edutopia article compiles a variety of free, engaging resources to help teachers and families connect the Fourth of July to meaningful educational experiences. Rather than focusing only on holiday celebrations, the curated collection includes hands-on science experiments, history lessons, arts and crafts, educational apps, and multimedia activities that explore the history, traditions, and science behind Independence Day. Although some of the original links have changed over time, the article still offers valuable ideas and inspiration for cross-curricular summer learning or classroom activities that combine history, science, literacy, and creativity.

After exploring one of the featured science activities, challenge students to design and build a safe "firework" launcher, create a patriotic-themed engineering project, or investigate the science behind fireworks through a simple experiment. Have students examine historical documents, paintings, or photographs related to the American Revolution and Independence Day. Students can work in groups to identify important details, make inferences, and discuss how these sources help tell the story of America's founding. Build a choice board using several of the article's suggested resources. Include options such as reading a historical article, completing a patriotic craft, exploring a virtual museum, conducting a science investigation, or writing a journal entry from the perspective of someone living during the American Revolution. Students can select activities that match their interests while demonstrating their learning.

Reddit democratizes news through voting on the headlines that matter to you. Though informative, it is not eye catching. Simply "upvote" or "downvote" a headline to bring it higher (or lower) in the news column. Curate the best stuff on Reddit by creating a Subreddit. Note: New accounts are unable to make a Subreddit without time spent being active in the community. Search or view the various Subreddits for a topic of your choice. To make a Subreddit, choose "Create your own Subreddit." On the left-hand side are the boxes for your Subreddits (under the Multireddit label). Subscribe to various threads of interest through the subscribe button. As you subscribe to the threads, your Reddit page will change to show these subscriptions. Some threads are Ask Me Anything (AMA), and the poster will answer when you ask. As Reddit is Social Networking, be sure to look at the comments of others before sharing with students. Since you can curate your own topics, this may not be a major concern.

Use Reddit to show the uniqueness and value of topics by the upvotes and downvotes. Also discuss the thinking behind the upvotes and downvotes. Comments to the posts offer more detailed information to portions of the topic that can lead to different points of view, deeper analysis, and discussion of related topics. Since the average person and professionals use Reddit, students can ask a question to get crowdsourced answers such as "How to write a better term paper?" View the various topics that have high or poor ratings and determine whether the ratings are based upon facts or opinion. Students can find various topics for term papers or research by viewing the Reddit topics. Reddit is also popular for finding peer review journals and tutorials.

RefSeek is a different search tool for beginning researchers as well as those already knowledgeable about the process. Although this search engine appears "plain vanilla," it is a great option for research purposes. As they explain it, they "search the entire Web for freely available academic information, providing relevant results while filtering out most commercial content." This is different from Google's standard search. RefSeek looks through web pages, books, encyclopedias, journals, and newspapers for your chosen topic. With special search features, students can also limit searches to specific web pages, search two topics (either-or option) at once, and even include search words usually dismissed by academic searches (like "the" and "if"). After starting a search, click on Directory to limit searches to certain types of publications and resources, including quotations, almanacs and teacher resources.

Use this site to compare the validity of various types of reference material sources. Compare results of searches to teach critical reading skills and 21st century information literacy. Compare info from sources on this site to those in print materials. Encourage your students to use this tool for individual as well as group projects. Encourage ESL and ELL students to find sources with lower reading levels that still give the necessary information.

In the Classroom

Have students discuss short scenarios about digital communication (texting, group chats, social media comments) and decide what respectful responses look like. Watch a Common Sense video about online communication, then have students discuss how tone and word choice affect relationships. Have students rewrite unkind or unclear messages to make them more respectful, supportive, and appropriate for digital spaces.

One of the most powerful gifts we can give our students--and ourselves--is the realization that our minds are never "finished" products. The Habit of the Mind - Remaining Open to Continuous Learning is the heartbeat of the lifelong learner; it's about having the humility to say "I don't know yet" and the pride to go find the answer. When students see us adjusting our thinking based on new information, seeking out resources to fill gaps in our knowledge, or genuinely considering their perspectives, we're teaching them something more valuable than any content standard: that learning never stops, and not knowing is just the beginning of discovery. In a world that's changing faster than ever, the ability to stay curious, admit mistakes, revise understanding, and actively seek growth isn't just nice to have--it's essential. The types of resources that you will find in this collection include Growth Mindset videos and websites, reflection journals, peer and self-assessment rubrics, digital portfolio platforms, case studies, question board templates, metacognitive reflection activities, TED talks, progress-tracking tools, before-and-after thinking routines (such as "I used to think...Now I think..", digital feedback tools, science news aggregators that often debunk "old facts," free online courses, and more. Use these resources to help our students understand that the smartest people aren't the ones who know everything; they're the ones who never stop learning.

In the Classroom

To cultivate the habit of - Remaining Open to Continuous Learning, implement "I used to think... Now I think..." routines using digital reflection journals to help students visualize how their understanding evolves over time. A tool like Padlet reviewed here is an easy way to create a collaborative digital reflection journal. Try out a science news aggregator (such as Science News Explores reviewed here) that debunks "old facts" and peer-assessment rubrics; educators can transform the classroom into a space where admitting a mistake is celebrated as a vital step toward deeper, more accurate discovery.
