The Rick Riordan website's Teachers' Guides section offers a variety of free resources designed to help educators incorporate Riordan's popular books into their classrooms. These guides include discussion questions, reading comprehension activities, lesson plans tailored to the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series, The Kane Chronicles, Magnus Chase, and more. The materials are aligned with Common Core standards and support subjects like English Language Arts, history, mythology, and cultural studies. Teachers can use these guides to inspire critical thinking, foster creativity, and deepen students' engagement with the stories. The resources are ideal for sparking interest in mythology and diverse cultures through engaging, student-centered activities.

tag(s): authors (114), critical thinking (182), greek (45), myths and legends (44), reading comprehension (146), student-centered (10)

In the Classroom

Create a mythology-themed trivia game where students answer questions about Greek, Roman, Norse, or Egyptian myths featured in Riordan's books. Make an online quiz using Blooket, reviewed here or Wayground (formerly Quizizz), reviewed here. Have students design a demigod character, including a parent from mythology. They can write a short character profile, including strengths, weaknesses, and a unique quest. Transform the classroom into Camp Half-Blood for a day! Create stations where students complete challenges (ex, solving riddles, crafting "weapons," or navigating a "labyrinth"). Using the hero's journey structure (as seen in Percy Jackson), have students outline and write a short adventure story. Encourage them to incorporate mythological elements and share their stories with the class.

Use this site on a projector or interactive whiteboard as a fun way to introduce students to different types of grammar. In addition, use this as a way to discuss and informally assess prior knowledge as you start your study of a particular grammar topic. Post this on your class webpage for students to use at home or use it in the lab or classroom when students finish an assignment early. Be sure to check out the downloads section. Provide students with the confusing words handout and have them paste it into their writing notebooks. They will never confuse affect and effect again.

RoarLingo is a web-based English pronunciation platform that helps learners improve their pronunciation of difficult sounds and practice speaking more like native speakers using real-world video clips. The site offers interactive features, including quizzes, vocabulary review, and progress tracking, to support both students and educators in reinforcing accurate pronunciation. It emphasizes engagement through real video and audio examples and a fun, gamified learning experience. Additionally, RoarLingo now offers a Chrome extension that allows users to turn any website, including YouTube, into an immersive pronunciation classroom, enabling on-site word definitions, pronunciation playback, quiz practice, and vocabulary building directly within web content. Teachers should note that because RoarLingo relies on YouTube videos, students will not be able to view them if their school district blocks YouTube access.

tag(s): game based learning (311), pronunciation (33)

In the Classroom

Ask students to keep a digital or paper vocabulary journal where they record new words from RoarLingo, including definitions, sample sentences, and a phonetic breakdown. Students can then practice pronouncing the words and share them in small groups. Digital journals can be made using Book Creator, reviewed here. After practicing pronunciation through RoarLingo, students can create short dialogues using the new vocabulary. In pairs or small groups, they role-play conversations, focusing on clear pronunciation and fluency. Play short RoarLingo video clips for the class and have students repeat the target words or phrases. Turn it into a quick competition where students earn points for correct pronunciation, encouraging active participation.

Choose these games for student play during computer lab or at classroom centers to practice math and language skills. Although simple, they provide fun review of skills. Demonstrate some of the activities on your interactive whiteboard. Although this site was created to help teachers find educational "fun" activities to do during indoor recess, the activities would also be great for learning centers or use in an interactive whiteboard center. The reading category for this site is the most valuable for learning new skills or reviewing skills.

Rootbook is an interactive story reading and writing program. Without signing up, you can read books in English, German, Italian, and many other languages. Once registered (requires an email, player name & password), you can create your own stories to save. Registering allows you to submit reviews of the stories available on the site. Rootbook says they will soon have filters to monitor inappropriate language. Until then, read stories and branches prior to sharing with young people. Leave a comment if you find anything offensive, and they will remove it.
This site includes advertising.

tag(s): creative writing (124), digital storytelling (167), interactive stories (22), narrative (16), writing (308)

In the Classroom

To use Rootbook and save work, students will need an email account. If students cannot have their own email accounts, consider using a "class set" of Gmail sub-accounts, explained here. This will provide anonymous interaction within your class, and you (as the Gmail account holder) will be able to go into each Rootbook account to check progress. Begin by choosing a story and reading it as a class. Give the students scratch paper to create storyboards and have them continue the story. Then collect the papers and have them write their continuation again on someone else's paper. Next, ask students to end the story and switch again, and write their ending on this new paper. Doing this will help younger students understand the "branching" story line. If students are sitting in groups of four, they can just rotate the papers around for this activity. When students want to create their story on Rootbook, be sure to have them upload an image for the cover first and plan the story using a graphic organizer! As subject matter for stories in any curriculum area, tell a science story, such as the life of a butterfly or a history story such as what happened (and could have happened) at the Boston Tea Party.

This site offers interactive stories and reading activities for free. Colorful graphics interest "emerging readers." The songs and reading support materials provide reinforcement of the reading skills being learned. Each story comes with pre-reading and post-reading questions and other word attack and grammar activities. Word games are fun and introduce early reading techniques such as alphabetization and phonetics. Since the site is Australian made, some of the worksheets use British names for grammar components, such as full stop for period. Since the text of the stories appears before the stories, this site would work well with ESL students too.

Play musical selections for students to "name the instrument" or talk about musical elements and styles in music class. Have partners explore the site to find examples of different rhythms or styles they prefer. Use Royalty Free Music for soft background music during quiet work times in your classroom. Share with students for use in multimedia presentations. Try sharing this resource with students when they are creating podcasts, slideshows, and other media projects. This would also be great for performance groups such as drama clubs or musicals that need background music. Use background music for poetry readings during poetry month. Have them try making a "sound rebus" story on your class wiki, with words and sound links to tell what happens. Download sound effects and add them, worry-free, to projects or productions. Make sure students realize that "royalty free" does not dismiss the need to give proper credit for their source!

Here is the official website of a popular young adult author. S. E. Hinton burst on the literary scene with the book "The Outsiders," written when she was only 17. Her youth has always appealed to young readers, as well as her young subject matter. This is a typical official website that includes biographical information, with information on her books and movie adaptations. The book's pages include the author's comments, as well as short excerpts and summaries of the works.

In the Classroom

A good source of material about the author. This site will also steer kids to her other works. The BIO will probably answer questions many of your students have about her stories and where she gets her ideas, etc.

Sail the Book does what we all wish we had time to do: it pulls together works of literature--all of which are focused on maritime themes--and uses Google Earth technology to bring them to life. With so many online resources out there, it's great to encounter a truly well-integrated interdisciplinary site that draws on the strength of 21st century technology to transform classic literature. Each of six books, including Darwin's Voyage of the Beagle, is presented in full text form, chapter by chapter. Each chapter is accompanied by a "tour" linked to Google Earth, and here is where the fun begins! The tours include a number of Points of Interest that open in Google Earth as well as questions and activities that link to passages within the text. Taken as a whole, this is an interdisciplinary approach at its best, combining geography, history, science, art and literature into one tidy package. If you aren't sure where to get started, visit the Video Tutorials to learn more! The video clips are hosted on YouTube. If your district blocks YouTube, then they may not be viewable.

In the Classroom

Developed by a teacher, Sail the Book is exactly what all good teachers wish they had time to do: create imaginative, integrated units that take advantage of today's technology. Sail the Book could be used in conjunction with a regular classroom study of one of the works of literature included. However, a reasonably self-directed student could undertake an independent reading of any of the books, using Sail the Book to gain further insight. Alternatively, the "tours" might help struggling readers or non-native readers get the most out of these works, helping the words come to life through more visual terms. The site seems uniquely suited to a multi-disciplinary setting like a gifted enrichment class, where students are free to pull from a variety of curricula--science, literature, geography, and history--to add value and rigor to the traditional classroom. The site is easily adaptable. Use one chapter. Use one full book. Do the tours with the activities or without the activities. And once your students have done a tour, ask them how THEY might construct a tour of their own related to some other work of literature they love. Creating their own could be an ideal unit for a gifted classroom or for gifted students going above and beyond the "regular" unit.
