Symbaloo, reviewed here, integrates Learning Paths directly into its Webmix and Webspace platform. Teachers can create game-like, interactive learning sequences by adding embeddable resources such as websites, videos, documents, presentations, and games to a Webmix. Add activities, including multiple-choice and open-ended questions, then arrange the tiles in the order students should complete them. Students move through the pathway at their own pace, and teachers can continue editing, rearranging tiles, or adding activities without starting over. Users can explore the Symbaloo Library for Learning Paths and Webmixes created by other users. Use a shared Learning Path as is or add a copy to your account and customize it for your students. You can use Learning Paths in class or assign them for students to complete independently. Symbaloo also emphasizes student privacy: students can use an avatar and nickname, while their progress and responses are stored on their own device rather than by Symbaloo.

Create, find, and share visually appealing Webmixes (web-based screens of link "tiles") to share web resources. Find the "Tour" (a green tile with a red circle) to learn more about Symbaloo EDU or begin exploring color-coded links on your own. Choose the EDU Tools WebMix to find links to classroom resources for social networking, video and image tools, remote teaching, and much more. Other WebMixes explicitly designed for educators include widgets for classroom use, educational headlines, and much more. Tailor web resources to your individual needs by creating your own WebMixes. Add tiles to connect students with the resources you choose instantly. Accounts are free but require a password (and email verification). Click "Edit WebMix" to change the background, rename the webmix, and edit the tiles. Link tiles to website URLs or RSS feed links. Hover over a tile to bring up a simple menu. In the Classroom
Be sure to know the URLs of the resources you are planning to share, or have them open in other tabs to copy/paste. To share, you must be able to copy/paste URLs (web addresses). Have older students create their own webmixes, but this resource is best used as a teacher sharing tool for sharing links, RSS feeds, and other resources for students to use in specific projects or as general course links. If shared with the world, the webmix can be viewed by others and is public.Create a webmix of the most used sites for your class and first demonstrate how the webmix works on a projector or interactive whiteboard if you have special instructions or color coding for its use. Some examples include links to copyright-free images, online textbooks, or online tools such as Google Drive/Docs, Google Drawings, Prezi, and more. Link to teacher web pages, webquests, resource sites for your subject, and any other resource that is helpful for students. Consider creating a login for the whole class to update with suggestions from class members. Use this AS your class website. Color-code the tiles on a webmix for younger, non-reader, or ESL/ELL students. For example, color each subject differently from the others. Differentiate by color coding varying levels of skills practice at a classroom computer center or to distinguish homework practice sites from in-class sites. Differentiate difficulty levels using the various colors, enabling you to list resources for both your learning support students and gifted students, and all in between. Use color to organize tools for different projects or individual students. You may want to share Symbaloo EDU with parents at Back-to-School Night and discuss the color-coding system for differentiation. This will help parents (and students) identify sites that are ideal for their level. Be sure to link or embed your webmix on a computer center in your room for easy access. Share a review site webmix for parents and students to access at home before tests, as well. Team up with other teachers in your subject/grade to create chapter-by-chapter webmixes for all your students.
Challenge your gifted students to curate and collaborate on their own webmixes as a curriculum extension activity on topics such as climate change or the pros and cons of genetically engineered food. They can use color coding to sort sites by bias (or neutrality) as well as to group subtopics under the overall theme. Use the student-made webmixes with other students to elevate the overall level of discussion in your class or as an extra-credit challenge. If you embed the webmix in a class wiki, all students can respond with questions and comments for the gifted students to moderate and reply, creating a student-led community of learners.

Users can explore patterns and trends, compare information, filter data, and create visual stories that make complex information easier to understand. Tableau can be useful in the classroom for analyzing survey results, studying historical or scientific data, creating geographic visualizations, and developing students' data-literacy skills. Tableau offers several paid plans for organizations that need cloud sharing, collaboration, and advanced management features. No one wants to learn how to write HTML (web page code) to make tables, but adding a table to your blog is sometimes a must to line up information into columns. Copy and paste your cells from Excel, Calc, or other spreadsheets into the box provided. Choose options such as font size and style and color. Click the Tableize it! button to view the HTML code along with a preview of the results. Copy and paste the HTML code into any web page you create, such as your blog or wiki. Simply type or paste in any text, import from any website, or upload a file to begin the word cloud. Choose from options such as language to use, limit number of words, exclude words based on frequency, or exclude unwanted words. Save as a PDF, print, or embed the finished image using links included with the finished product. The most frequently used words appear larger and in a bold font.

This is a great visual tool to use. Take a poll and have your students type their answers into the word cloud builder. Then display on an interactive whiteboard or projector and see which answer was the most popular. Use this site as a way to help students see and memorize text, especially visual learners. Use it also when writing poetry or to "see" themes of repeated words and images. Have students paste in their own writing to spot repeated (and monotonous) language when teaching lessons on word choice. Use this site to surprise students with words that appear often in their writing. Have students work in groups to create word posters of vocabulary words with related meanings, such as different ways to say "walk" or "said" and decorate your classroom with these visual reminders of the richness of language. Build context around historic dates using details of pop culture, magazines, and more. Have students search for their birthdate and write about significant events on that date. TaleTrove is an online collection of user-submitted stories offered in several different formats. Click Good Reads on the top left of the menu and choose from books for young readers (grades K-3) to browse through book titles. Click on the book icon to choose from different formats to read and hear stories. Options include viewing as PDF, listening to mp3 (audio), or viewing the flipbook. Most stories include all three options; however, a few offer only one or two. Each book also includes a learning guide with suggestions for pre and post-reading discussion as well as ideas for use when reading the book. The Create space menu accesses games, crafts, and other activities to explore and try. Users can submit reviews of the stories available on the site.

In the Classroom
View and listen to stories by opening up two tabs in your browser. Choose one to listen in mp3 format and the other to view using either PDF format or the flipbook reader. View and listen to stories together on your interactive whiteboard or create a link on classroom computers for students to read independently. You could even submit a "review" written by your entire class or have your more able students write one you can submit using a teacher account. Browse for other reading-related activities and crafts. Be sure to include this site on your class web page for students to access both in and outside of class for reading practice.
This resource requires PDF reader software like Adobe Acrobat.

Your spoken words are instantly changed to written text. Just click on the microphone and speak. Follow simple directions and immediately begin to dictate. As soon as speech is ready, it appears in red, and you push ok. Corrections are suggested in red. If your speech is not recognized, there is an alternatives button to help you dictate correctly. You can also click on the speaker button to hear the written words played back to you. Click the blue arrow to move the text down to the larger text box. There you can store several phrases or sentences together. Choose to print, email, or tweet your message. Talk Typer is also available in a variety of languages. Be sure to speak slowly and clearly. This is best used with short phrases or sentences.

Emerging literacy students will enjoy the success they have with their oral language into written word. Improve content and forget about mechanics of writing or typing. Focus in on grammar and mechanics after seeing the recognized mistakes. Include this website on every tool bar and as a favorite on your class web page. Talky is a chat and video sharing application that is easy to set up and use. Features include screen sharing, group video chat with up to six participants, and privacy setting options. Begin by naming your conversation. Be sure to allow access to your computer's camera and microphone when prompted. Share the link with participants to allow access to the meeting. Use links to lock the room to anyone without a password and to share your screen. Current settings only allow use of Talky with Chrome and Firefox. Screen sharing is available with Chrome only. Be sure to read the helpful information found at the bottom of the site for Chrome screen sharing settings. Best part of all... no membership or sign-up is necessary to use this tool.

Begin by adding a title, then choose to create a form from scratch or use a template. Templates include surveys, questionnaires, and more. To add content, type your question or add text, or type "/" to choose from a list of options that includes options to add short, long, or multiple choice answers, a dropdown box, links, and more. Customize the look of your form by choosing a theme, fonts, and colors. Create an account to publish your form, then share it using the share link or embed code. The free plan includes unlimited forms and submissions, with many integrated features.
