Booklist Online's "Online Exclusives" is the digital extension of Booklist, a trusted publication from the American Library Association. This section features book reviews and related content that do not appear in the print magazine, giving teachers and librarians access to an even wider range of expert recommendations. The reviews cover children's, young adult, and adult titles, helping educators discover new and upcoming books, build classroom and school library collections, and select high-quality reading materials that match student interests and instructional goals.

tag(s): book lists (161)

In the Classroom

Share a few Booklist reviews and let students vote on which titles should be added to the classroom library. This builds excitement and gives students a voice in reading selections. Use reviews to introduce new genres (historical fiction, fantasy, memoir, graphic novels). Students can compare books across genres and reflect on their preferences. Use Booklist reviews to introduce new authors. Students can research the author, explore themes, and connect the book to class units.

The Alabama History Hub, hosted by the Alabama Department of Archives and History, is a free online resource that provides educators and students with access to primary sources, artifacts, lesson plans, activities, games, and worksheets on Alabama history. Resources can be searched by grade level, topic, time period, and resource type, making it easy to locate materials that support specific curriculum goals. Designed for PreK-12 classrooms, the site helps teachers integrate primary-source analysis and inquiry-based learning into social studies, history, civics, and cross-curricular lessons. In addition to classroom resources, the Alabama Department of Archives and History offers educators access to traveling resource kits, virtual learning opportunities, museum field trips, and professional development programs that support the teaching of Alabama history and civics.

Students can work in small groups to compare different primary sources (letters, photos, or documents) from the site, discuss how each source provides a unique perspective, and then present their findings using a graphic organizer or sketchnote using Google Drawings, reviewed here. Students can use the Hub's lesson plans and activities to conduct a guided inquiry project where they develop a question about Alabama history, gather evidence from sources, and present a claim supported by reasoning. Students can explore the Alabama History Hub by selecting a time period (such as the Civil War or the Civil Rights era) and analyzing primary sources to create a short "history news report" summarizing key events and perspectives from that era. They can record using a digital tool such as Kapwing, reviewed here.

The Assembly on Literature for Adolescents (ALAN) invites teens to participate in an ongoing online book club experience. Students read a selected book, submit at least one discussion question, and take part in scheduled online discussions in a chat-based format. Following the group discussion, participants often have the opportunity to interact directly with the author during a live or moderated author chat held shortly afterward. This program encourages thoughtful reading, discussion, and authentic engagement with authors through online platforms.

A great outlet to suggest to your teens who love to read but don't find enough others with similar interests! INclude this as a link from your teacher or school library web site. Pretest this and get tech help, if you plan to have your class "chat" with an author in class on a projector.

Alice will have your students in wonderland as they use this innovative 3D programming environment targeted to middle and high school students. Be the director of a movie or the creator of a video game. 3D objects appear in an on-screen virtual world imagined by the creator and move around according to the directions you give by dragging and dropping tiles. The drag and drop technique provides a more engaging programming experience for first-time programmers. Alice provides exposure to object-oriented programming. Alice has practical value for students to learn how computers think. The instructions correspond to standard statements in a production oriented programming language, such as Java, C++, and C#. While using Alice, programmers can immediately see how their animation program runs and the behavior of the objects in their animation. Manipulate camera angles and lighting to make further enhancements. Alice is a revolutionary method to teach programming, especially to first-time learners. It allows students to understand programming concepts, a 21st-century skill.

tag(s): animation (62), coding (109), digital storytelling (167), problem solving (274)

In the Classroom

Be sure to check with your Technology Department, as many districts require authorization to download or install new applications. Plan ahead as you request that this application be installed on your classroom or laptop cart computers. Alice provides an opportunity to enhance learning for students by creating and learning how to problem solve. Subscribe to the teacher list to receive updates and integration ideas for Alice. The purpose of this list is to provide an easy way to ask questions and collaborate with the Alice teaching community. View and use activities to increase programming knowledge and the use of the Alice program.

Students quickly catch on to Alice when allowed to play and easily see what they can make from it. Provide a simple assignment with defined rules/tasks to learn the tools as well as the drag and drop interface. Have students use a storyboard to organize their creation in order to keep tabs on students and their creations. Replace the paper and pencil storyboard by using a digital storyboard like Story Map, reviewed here, or Storyboarder, reviewed here. Build games to review curricular material for assessments. Have students create videos or digital stories to bring a subject to life. Teachers of gifted can turn their students loose to create animations about individual interests or research projects.

In the Classroom

Think outside the 'box' when considering this application. Teachers may opt to teach the elements of the story through entering character traits, setting, plot events, etc., then printing a chart to teach those concepts. Special Ed or ESL/ELL teachers will love using this organizer to help students organize new words they must learn. If students use a three-ring notebook, new words can be added over time. Mark this tool as a favorite on your classroom computer so students can access it as needed.
